Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo get rid of fleas on a cat, use a flea product labeled for cats and matched to your cat’s age and weight, apply or give it exactly as the label directs, and treat every pet and the home at the same time. Combing helps remove fleas and eggs, but it does not replace a full control plan. Expect several months of management for an established infestation, not a single-dose fix.
Start by confirming fleas and checking the cat’s health
Look for adult fleas, which are small, fast-moving, and dark brown, along the neck, base of the tail, and belly. Fleas are not always easy to see on a cat. Flea dirt (dark specks that turn reddish when dropped on a damp paper towel) and persistent scratching, biting at the skin, or patchy hair loss are also useful clues. Cornell’s veterinary guidance on fleas notes that fleas may not always be seen and that itching and characteristic skin changes can point to them.
Before choosing any product, see a veterinarian if the cat is very young, old, pregnant, nursing, sick, underweight, or on other medications, or if it has had a reaction to a flea product in the past. Also seek veterinary care promptly for wounds, skin infection, or a cat that seems unwell. The FDA’s safe-use guidance for flea and tick products in pets recommends veterinary involvement for pets with health conditions or special circumstances.
Choose a product labeled for cats
The single most important rule is that the product must be labeled for cats and for your cat’s life stage and weight. Dog products are not interchangeable with cat products, and a product labeled for one life stage or weight range should not be used outside it. Read the label every time you buy and before every dose, because formulations and labels change.

Flea control comes in several forms, and they are not interchangeable:
| Product form | How it is used | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Topical spot-on | Applied to the skin at a specified site | Listed by FDA as a common form; minimum age, weight, and interval are on the label (not stated in the sources reviewed here) |
| Oral pill or chew | Given by mouth | Listed by FDA as a form; oral products are regulated by FDA as drugs |
| Collar | Worn around the neck | Listed by FDA as a form; many topical products, including collars, are regulated by EPA |
| Spray, shampoo, dip, or powder | Applied to the coat | Listed by FDA as forms; check whether the label permits use on cats and at what age |
Ask your veterinarian which form suits your cat, your household, and any health history. Do not treat one form as universally safest or most effective.

Step-by-step: get rid of fleas on your cat
- Confirm the infestation. Part the fur at the neck, base of the tail, and belly, and look for live fleas or flea dirt. Comb as described below to check.
- Get veterinary input on the product. Tell the veterinarian your cat’s age, weight, health conditions, medications, and any past reactions to flea products.
- Buy a cat-labeled product from a reputable channel. Check that the package lists cats, your cat’s age and weight range, and the correct directions. Keep the package.
- Apply or give it exactly as labeled. Follow the stated dose, site, and interval. Do not split, combine, or add extra doses unless the label or your veterinarian says so.
- Comb the cat regularly. FDA recommends flea combs to remove fleas and flea eggs. Comb over a white paper towel or bowl of soapy water, and dip the comb after each pass so you can see what is removed.
- Treat every pet in the home. Cornell and CAPC both say all pets must be treated for control to work. Ask your veterinarian for a product plan for each animal.
- Clean the environment. Wash pet bedding, and vacuum frequently, including under furniture and along baseboards. Treat the home only with products whose labels allow that use and whose choice you have discussed with your veterinarian.
- Monitor and keep going. Continue treatment for the full period the label and veterinarian recommend, and keep checking the cat.
Why the home and other pets matter
Cornell states that successful flea treatment must interrupt the flea life cycle both on the animal and in the environment. Fleas that were not killed on the cat can leave eggs in bedding, carpets, and furniture, so treating only the cat leaves the source in place. Routine treatment of all pets, bedding washing, and frequent vacuuming together address both sides of the cycle.
Some household products are not meant for direct contact with cats. FDA advises not to apply a home or yard product directly to a cat unless its label explicitly allows that use. In homes with several pets, FDA also advises following each label and separating recently treated pets when needed to prevent grooming or ingestion of product.

How long control takes
Cornell says flea treatment may take a few months to completely manage, and CAPC’s flea guideline says established infestations may take several months. Seeing a few fleas in the weeks after you start treatment does not by itself mean the product has failed, because fleas already in the environment can still emerge. If fleas persist well beyond the timeline on the product label and your veterinarian’s plan, return to your veterinarian rather than adding extra doses.
Watch for reactions
FDA lists signs of a possible reaction after use, including dizziness, wobbliness, incoordination, poor appetite, depression, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive salivation, and possible seizures. If you see any of these, call a veterinarian right away. FDA says a veterinarian may advise bathing the cat, depending on which product was used, so ask before you wash the cat yourself.

Isoxazoline products are one class of prescription flea and tick medicines. FDA considers the class safe and effective but says it has been associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including tremors, ataxia, and seizures, in some animals. Your veterinarian should weigh your cat’s history before selecting one. The FDA fact sheet for pet owners and veterinarians on isoxazoline adverse events describes these reactions in more detail.
FDA also approved generic nitenpyram tablets to treat flea infestations in dogs and cats. That is a regulatory approval for a product category, not a recommendation for your cat. Whether it or any other product fits your cat is a decision for your veterinarian. You can read the FDA announcement on generic nitenpyram tablets for context.

Reading the label: FDA or EPA regulation
Flea and tick products are regulated by either FDA or EPA. In general, FDA regulates oral and injectable animal drugs, while EPA regulates many topical products such as shampoos, collars, powders, sprays, and spot-ons, with exceptions. An FDA-approved product label carries a NADA or ANADA number, and an EPA-registered product label carries an EPA Registration Number. The FDA explainer on identifying approved flea and tick products covers how to check. If a label does not show one of these identifiers, ask your veterinarian before using it.
To report a suspected problem with a flea or tick product, FDA provides guidance on how to report problems with flea and tick products.
Sources and limits
The guidance here reflects FDA’s safe-use and adverse-event materials, Cornell’s veterinary flea advice, and the CAPC flea guideline. Exact ages, weights, dosing intervals, and claims vary by product and change over time, so check the current package label and your veterinarian’s instructions for your cat. The sources reviewed do not establish which specific product is best for an individual cat.
