Are Cheetahs Endangered? Their Global Status Explained

Cheetahs are classified as Vulnerable globally, while the Horn of Africa population is reported as Endangered. The widely cited estimate of approximately 7,100 cheetahs comes from a 2017 study, not a current census.

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is listed as Vulnerable globally on the IUCN Red List, according to the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF). That global classification does not describe every population or legal framework: the Horn of Africa population was recognized as distinct and uplisted to Endangered in 2023. The best-known range-wide estimate is approximately 7,100 cheetahs, from a 2017 study—not a current census.

What is the cheetah’s official conservation status?

Status labels depend on the assessment’s geographic scope and the system being used. The global IUCN category, a regional population assessment, national law, and international trade rules are not interchangeable.

Scope or framework Status or finding What it refers to
Global IUCN Red List Vulnerable The global species classification, as reported by CCF.
Horn of Africa population Endangered CCF reports that this population was recognized as distinct and uplisted in 2023.
U.S. Endangered Species Act Endangered A national legal classification reported by CCF, not the global IUCN category.
CITES Appendix I An international trade listing, distinct from an IUCN Red List category.

“Endangered” is often used casually to mean at serious risk, but formal labels depend on the system and population assessed. The accurate short answer is that cheetahs are globally Vulnerable, while the Horn of Africa population is reported as Endangered and other legal frameworks use their own classifications.

How many cheetahs are left?

Durant and colleagues’ 2017 peer-reviewed range-wide study estimated approximately 7,100 cheetahs. The study also estimated that cheetahs occupied about 9% of their historical distribution and that 77% of the population occurred outside protected areas. These are findings from that study, not a 2026 census.

There is no comprehensive country-by-country population census for October 2026 in the sources reviewed here. CCF’s August 2026 meeting report says long-term assessments in Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa found some stronghold populations smaller than previously believed and, in several cases, substantially lower than a decade earlier. CCF also identifies human-caused mortality as a leading cause of deaths. This update signals concern, but it is not a new global population estimate.

Regional estimates must also be kept separate from the global total. A 2023 paper by Schmidt-Küntzel and colleagues cited an estimate of 260–590 mature individuals for the Horn of Africa population. In that study, all 55 confiscated cheetahs tested from Somaliland were assigned to Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii; the sample is evidence relevant to trafficking pressure, not a representative census.

Where do cheetahs live?

Cheetahs survive in fragmented parts of Africa and in a small population in Iran. CCF identifies the largest single cheetah population as occupying a six-country landscape spanning Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, Angola, Mozambique, and Zambia. CCF also reports that more than 75% of wild cheetahs live on rural farmland alongside human communities. These figures describe the source’s account and should not be read as equally current country-by-country counts.

Habitat fragmentation can isolate populations and make movement between suitable areas harder. Since most cheetahs occur outside protected areas, farms and other multiple-use landscapes are central to their conservation as well as parks and reserves.

Why are cheetahs threatened?

Habitat loss and fragmentation

Habitat loss and fragmentation reduce the space available to cheetahs and can separate populations. The 2017 range-wide study emphasizes that declines outside protected areas can increase extinction risk; strong performance inside parks may not make up for suppressed population growth elsewhere.

Loss of prey and conflict with people

Loss of wild prey and conflict with people are among the pressures identified by CCF. Cheetahs share many landscapes with livestock and rural communities, so conservation depends on reducing conflict and supporting coexistence rather than focusing only on protected areas.

Illegal wildlife trade

Illegal wildlife trade is another documented pressure. Schmidt-Küntzel and colleagues’ 2023 study examined genetic material from 55 confiscated cheetahs in Somaliland and found all were assigned to the Horn of Africa population. The authors discussed this evidence alongside that population’s small size and continuing decline.

Human-caused mortality and broader pressures

CCF’s August 2026 Global Cheetah Meeting report says human-caused mortality remains a leading cause of deaths and describes increasing pressure across much of the cheetah’s range. CCF identifies climate change and human population growth as factors that exacerbate existing pressures.

Why protected areas alone cannot save cheetahs

Durant and colleagues’ 2017 study estimated that 77% of the cheetah population occurred outside protected areas. The study argues that conservation must address declines beyond parks: strong results within protected areas may not compensate for declines in the wider landscape.

CCF describes approaches that include livestock-guarding dogs, improved livestock enclosures or kraals, farmer education, monitoring, rescue, and anti-trafficking work. CCF reports that livestock-guarding-dog placements reduce livestock predation by 80–100%; this is an organization-reported result, not a guaranteed outcome for every setting.

What conservation measures can help?

The research points to conserving habitat beyond protected areas and promoting coexistence across working landscapes. CCF’s described efforts include practical measures for livestock owners and work to monitor cheetahs and address trafficking.

  1. Support coexistence on working lands: CCF describes livestock-guarding dogs, improved enclosures, and farmer education as parts of its approach.
  2. Protect habitat beyond parks: The 2017 study emphasizes the importance of multiple-use landscapes where much of the population occurs.
  3. Improve monitoring: CCF’s 2026 update calls for improved monitoring in light of concerning findings from some stronghold landscapes.
  4. Address illegal trade: The 2023 study documents trafficking exposure affecting the Horn of Africa population.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are cheetahs endangered?

The global IUCN category is Vulnerable, according to CCF. CCF reports that the Horn of Africa population was recognized as distinct and uplisted to Endangered in 2023. National legal classifications and CITES listings are separate systems.

How many cheetahs are left in the wild?

Durant and colleagues estimated approximately 7,100 cheetahs in their 2017 range-wide study. This is a study estimate, not a current census; the sources reviewed do not provide a comprehensive global count for October 2026.

What does it mean that most cheetahs live outside protected areas?

The 2017 study estimated that 77% of the population occurred outside protected areas. It means conservation and coexistence on farms and other multiple-use landscapes matter alongside protection within parks.

Is the Horn of Africa population the same as the global cheetah population?

No. It is a regional population. The 2023 paper examined 55 confiscated cheetahs from Somaliland and cited a regional estimate of 260–590 mature individuals; neither figure is a global census.

What threats do cheetahs face?

Sources identify habitat loss and fragmentation, loss of prey, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal wildlife trade as major pressures. CCF’s 2026 meeting report also highlights human-caused mortality and calls for improved monitoring.
