You can let your dog stop and investigate smells without allowing the leash to go tight. Keep the leash slack as the rule for moving forward: when your dog pulls toward an odor, pause; when the leash slackens or your dog checks back, reward that moment and continue toward the smell. A sniff walk does not require a strict heel—just room to explore safely and a clear boundary against dragging.
What a sniff walk should look like
On a sniff walk, the dog gets time to investigate interesting scents instead of covering a set distance at your pace. Loose-leash walking means the leash has slack while your dog explores; it does not mean the dog must stay beside you at heel. The Wisconsin Humane Society includes sniffing and exploring in its description of loose-leash walking (Wisconsin Humane Society).
Sniffing can also be the reward for walking politely. The American Kennel Club explains that access to a desired smell can reinforce walking on a loose leash (AKC: How to Stop Your Dog From Pulling on Leash).
Choose the kind of walk that fits the situation
| Walk type | How it works | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated scent walk | Meander and allow frequent stops to investigate safe places. | When time and surroundings allow sniffing to be the main activity. |
| Transit or potty walk | Use more moving-along periods, with sniff breaks where practical. | When you have limited time, need to get somewhere, or are taking a routine or late-night potty trip. |
PetMD recommends teaching dogs to distinguish scent walks from routine or late-night potty trips (PetMD: Dog Sniffing Benefits). You can make the difference clear through your pace and a consistent release cue, such as “go sniff.” That cue is a practical way to signal access, not a prescribed phrase from the source.

Teach the slack-leash pattern
- Start somewhere quiet. Choose a route with few distractions and decide which parts are for sniffing and which require moving along. Keep your attention on traffic, people, other dogs and hazards.
- Reward small stretches of slack. Begin with a few steps beside you while the leash remains loose. Praise or offer a small treat, then gradually ask for more steps and practice around stronger distractions. Wisconsin Humane Society recommends beginning in a quiet area and building up gradually (Wisconsin Humane Society).
- Pause when the leash tightens. If your dog pulls toward a smell, stop rather than letting the tight leash carry them to it. Pulling can be reinforced if it succeeds in reaching something the dog wants. Avoid hauling your dog backward; simply wait for the leash to slacken or for your dog to check in.
- Make slack pay. As soon as the leash loosens, calmly praise or give a treat. Then continue toward the odor or use your chosen release cue to let your dog investigate. UC Davis identifies food, praise and access to sniffing as possible rewards for loose-leash behavior (UC Davis: Loose Leash Walking).
- Make the challenge easier if needed. If your dog cannot disengage from the smell or another distraction, create more distance and try again where it is easier to respond. Keep early practice brief and positive; loose-leash skills can take sustained practice.
Manage the space, not just the leash
Let your dog choose among safe spots to investigate, while you steer away from traffic, hazards, crowded paths and situations that could become uncomfortable for either of you. If a smell is too close to a road or another dog, do not treat access to it as a training requirement; move on or find a safer distance.
A fixed-length long line can provide more room in an appropriate open setting, but it is not suitable everywhere. PetMD gives 10–30 feet as an example for less-populated areas, while VCA describes fixed-length long lines of 15–50 feet for exercise. These are context-specific examples, not a universal ideal length. Use a long line only where you can maintain control and there is room to manage it; VCA discusses long-line exercise in safe or fenced settings (VCA Animal Hospitals: Controlling Pulling on Walks).

Choose equipment as support, not a shortcut
- Front-clip harness: A chest attachment may help manage pulling while you teach leash skills. UC Davis notes that it can decrease pulling, though some dogs still pull; Wisconsin Humane Society also presents it as a management aid for a strong-pulling dog. Fit and comfort matter, and it is not a substitute for rewarding slack.
- Fixed-length long line: Consider one only in a suitable open area where you can keep control. More leash length also means more line to manage, so it may be impractical around traffic, people or other dogs.
- Small treats: Useful for rewarding a check-in or a few steps of slack leash, particularly while the skill is new. Praise or a chance to sniff can also serve as rewards.
Wisconsin Humane Society recommends properly fitted equipment and discourages retractable leads for its loose-leash method. Do not turn a pulling episode into a tug-of-war by yanking hard: UC Davis warns that excessive force can cause neck trauma and notes potential injury from improperly used choke or prong collars. VCA emphasizes training without pain.

If your dog’s pulling comes with fear, anxiety, aggression, or persistent lunging and barking, treat it as more than a simple leash-manners problem. Ask your veterinarian about a qualified behavior professional who can assess your dog and provide individualized coaching. UC Davis and VCA both advise professional support for more serious behavior concerns (UC Davis; VCA Animal Hospitals).
