Keep a Silken Windhound’s coat natural: do not trim the feathering that frames the ears and face. The breed standard calls for a natural coat with minimal trimming, while a weekly grooming session is a general cadence listed by The Royal Kennel Club—not a rule that every dog needs the same schedule.
What the coat should look like
The International Silken Windhound Society (ISWS) describes the coat as soft and silky, with straight, slightly wavy, or curly texture all acceptable. Longer feathering grows along the backs of the forelegs, brisket, hindquarters, around the neck, and tail. The face, feet, front of the forelegs, and hocks are naturally short-coated.
The standard’s key instruction for grooming is explicit: “Feathering that frames the ears and face adds to the dog’s expression, and should not be trimmed.” The ISWS standard describes presentation as a natural coat with minimal trimming. How often to groom
The Royal Kennel Club lists grooming “Once a week” on its Silken Windhound breed profile. Use that as a practical starting point, not a guaranteed optimum or universal requirement: the profile does not establish that every individual dog needs exactly the same frequency. - Keep the ear-and-face framing untrimmed. This is the clearest breed-standard instruction.
- Preserve the natural outline. The ISWS standard calls for minimal trimming rather than shaping the coat into a groomed silhouette.
- Maintain the coat on a regular schedule. Weekly is the Royal Kennel Club’s broad reference point; adjust to your dog’s coat and needs rather than treating it as a fixed rule.
Brushes and combs: what owners mention
In an owner discussion, participants mention slicker brushes and combs, including a short-pin slicker and a metal comb. These are anecdotal owner suggestions, not tools required by either breed standard, and there is no comparative evaluation establishing one brush or method as best for Silken Windhounds.
