If your dog growls, freezes, snaps, or moves away when someone approaches food or another valued item, give the dog space and prevent anyone from trying to take it. Resource guarding can involve food, toys, chews, or objects a dog has picked up. It is a safety concern—not a reason to punish or challenge the dog. Start with management; seek individualized professional help if there is bite risk, children are involved, or the behavior is getting worse.

What resource guarding can look like

Guarding is behavior a dog uses to keep a valued resource. A dog may move away with an item, freeze, growl, snap, bite, or chase someone away. The triggers and intensity vary; guarding is not limited to a food bowl. A growl is a warning signal, not an invitation to test what the dog will tolerate. The ASPCA’s food-guarding guidance and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s prevention guidance describe guarding as a behavior to manage and address, not a dominance contest.

What to do in the moment

  1. Stop approaching. Do not reach toward the bowl or item, corner the dog, or ask someone else to retrieve it. Move people away calmly and give the dog room.
  2. Keep others out of reach. In particular, prevent children and visitors from approaching the dog while it has food, treats, toys, or chews.
  3. Let the dog finish in peace when it is safe to do so. Once the dog has left the area, remove an item only if you can do so without approaching or provoking the dog. If an item poses an immediate danger, contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for guidance rather than forcing a confrontation.
  4. Change the setup for next time. Feed the dog separately or use a barrier or crate where appropriate, and give chews and toys only in a place where people will not need to pass close by. These steps reduce opportunities for conflict; they do not by themselves show that guarding has improved.

Do not punish, intimidate, or forcibly take the resource. Punishment can worsen guarding, and repeatedly taking food away may teach a dog that a person approaching means competition. The AVSAB position statements say: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.”

Protect children from guarded resources

Children may miss a dog’s warning signals or approach a resource without recognizing the risk. Keep children physically separated from a dog that is eating, chewing, or holding a valued item; do not rely on a child to follow instructions or interpret the dog’s body language. If aggression has occurred around a child, maintain separation and seek professional guidance. The ASPCA discusses these risks in its food-guarding guidance and dogs-and-babies guidance; Veterinary Partner also covers child safety around dogs.

Why behavior exercises should be staged

The ASPCA describes desensitization and counterconditioning exercises that make a person’s approach predict something positive, such as a more desirable treat. The person starts at a distance and moves closer gradually only while the dog remains relaxed. This is not the same as taking the bowl away to see how the dog reacts. A dog that may bite should not be worked through these exercises without professional guidance.

Stop an exercise if the dog shows stress or aggression, or if progress stalls. Body language can be difficult to read, and moving too quickly can increase risk. The ASPCA’s step-by-step food-guarding guidance describes the exercise and its cautions.

If a dog eats so quickly that there is little opportunity to offer treats during a carefully planned exercise, the ASPCA notes that a commercially available slow-feeder dish may help. It is an optional feeding aid—not a treatment for guarding or a safety device—and it does not make it safe to approach a guarded bowl.

When to get professional help

Arrange help from an experienced behavior professional if the dog has bitten, may bite, the behavior is worsening, or you cannot manage the triggers reliably. Children in the household are a reason to take precautions and seek guidance promptly. If a careful plan is not progressing, do not keep increasing the challenge on your own. A group obedience class is not a substitute for an individualized plan for resource guarding.
