Can Veterinary Medicines Harm People? Documented Risks and Safe Handling

Veterinary medicines can pose human exposure risks, but hazards depend on the drug. FDA documents skin absorption from altrenogest and exposure routes for veterinary cancer drugs, alongside practical handling precautions.

Yes. Some veterinary medicines can harm people who handle them or contact a treated animal, but the risk depends on the specific drug and its instructions. The available FDA evidence supports a detailed warning about altrenogest and a broader caution for veterinary cancer drugs; it does not establish eight distinct drugs to list as human hazards. Here is what is documented—and how to reduce exposure.

How veterinary medicines can expose people

A medicine intended for an animal can still pose a risk to the person who administers it, cleans up after treatment, or accidentally ingests it. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that improper handling or use of animal drugs can create human risk. The route and precautions differ by product: exposure may occur through skin contact, contaminated equipment or surfaces, accidental ingestion, or contact with a treated animal’s bodily fluids.

Do not treat every veterinary medicine as equally hazardous. Read the product’s label and follow its specific human-exposure warnings. Evidence about side effects in an animal does not, by itself, establish a hazard to people.

Altrenogest: a documented skin-absorption hazard

Altrenogest is a synthetic progestin used to suppress estrus in mares and synchronize estrus in young female pigs. FDA names products including Regumate, Matrix, Ovamed, Altren, Chronomate, and Swinemate. The agency says altrenogest is readily absorbed through intact skin, so contact with the liquid can expose the person handling it.

FDA reported 130 reports of accidental human exposure received from October 6, 1987, through May 30, 2018. Adverse effects were reported in 137 people—115 women and 22 men. Reported effects included abnormal or absent menstrual cycles in women and girls, decreased libido in men, and headaches, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and rashes. These are adverse-event reports, not an exposure rate, and they do not show that every exposure causes symptoms. FDA summarized the data on a page updated February 1, 2023.

Who should not handle it

FDA warns that people who are or may be pregnant, as well as people with certain clotting, cardiovascular, cancer, bleeding, or liver conditions, should not handle altrenogest products. Check the current product label and ask a health professional or veterinarian if you are unsure whether the warning applies to you.

Protective measures and accidental contact

  • Wear impermeable, nonporous gloves made of nitrile, butyl, vinyl, polyethylene, or neoprene, as directed by FDA. Disposable latex gloves may not provide adequate protection. Check that the glove specifications and product label match the intended use.
  • If the medicine gets on skin, in eyes or mouth, or on clothing, wash it off or rinse promptly, following the label. Seek medical care if adverse effects become apparent.
  • Clean contaminated work surfaces and equipment, and secure used syringes so others cannot contact them.

FDA says labeling revisions for Matrix and Regumate were approved on September 8 and December 21, 2022, respectively, and its February 1, 2023 update described the changes. Use the current label rather than relying on older handling instructions. Read the FDA’s altrenogest safety information.

Veterinary oncology drugs: exposure can continue after dosing

Veterinary cancer drugs may expose veterinary staff, people administering treatment, and people who handle a treated animal. FDA guidance identifies possible contact with the drug or active metabolites in the animal’s urine, feces, vomit, or saliva. That means exposure concerns can extend beyond the person giving the medicine.

There is no single cleanup or waiting-time rule that applies to every oncology drug. Ask the treating veterinarian for the product-specific instructions, including precautions for handling the medicine, cleaning accidents, and contact with the animal or its waste. FDA discusses human-user safety in its guidance on veterinary cancer chemotherapy drugs and its later human-user-safety guidance.

Flea and tick medicines: animal warnings are not automatically human hazards

FDA’s isoxazoline fact sheet describes reports of neurologic adverse reactions—including muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures—in some treated dogs and cats. That is evidence about reactions in animals; it does not establish that handling these products causes those effects in people.

For topical flea and tick products, follow the human-use warnings on the exact product label. For example, FDA’s labeling-change resource gives product-specific Bravecto topical instructions to avoid contact with the application site until two hours after application and to wash hands and contacted skin after use. Do not apply that timing to other products. See FDA’s isoxazoline information and FDA’s animal-drug labeling changes.

Safer storage and everyday handling

Medication mix-ups and careless storage can expose people as well as animals. FDA recommends these precautions:

  • Read the label and directions before giving or handling a medicine.
  • Keep each medicine in its original, labeled container.
  • Store animal medicines separately from human medicines, and keep all medicines out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not share one animal’s medicine with another unless a veterinarian says it is appropriate.
  • Do not cut, crush, or break a tablet or capsule unless the veterinarian instructs you to. If a tablet is meant to be split, FDA recommends using a pill cutter for dose accuracy.
  • Ask the veterinarian how to dispose of the product and its packaging, and how to manage any handling or dosing mistake.

These are general safeguards, not substitutes for a drug’s specific label. FDA’s veterinary medication-error guidance explains the risks of improper handling and medication mistakes.

What to do after a possible exposure

  1. Stop contact. Put the medicine down and prevent other people or pets from touching the spill or contaminated item.
  2. Follow the product label. Use its directions for skin, eye, or mouth contact and for cleaning the product. For altrenogest, FDA specifically advises washing product from skin, eyes, mouth, or clothing and cleaning contaminated surfaces and equipment.
  3. Get advice promptly if exposure may be significant. Contact a health professional or poison-control service for human exposure, and have the product container or label available. For an exposure involving an oncology drug or treated animal’s waste, also call the treating veterinarian for product-specific precautions.
  4. Seek medical care if symptoms develop. Do not wait for symptoms before asking for guidance when the product label or a health professional advises immediate action.
