How to Help a Cat With FVR Live a Comfortable, Happy Life

FVR can remain in a cat for life, but most cats do well with veterinary-guided care. Learn how to manage symptoms, protect other cats, reduce stress, and recognize when urgent help is needed.

Yes—many cats with feline viral rhinotracheitis (FVR) live normal, happy lives. The infection, usually caused by feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1), remains in the body for life, so flare-ups of congestion, sneezing, conjunctivitis, or eye disease can recur. With veterinary care, good nutrition and hydration, sensible infection control, vaccination, and stress reduction, most cats do well. Severe illness, breathing trouble, dehydration, inability to eat, or worsening eye disease needs prompt veterinary attention.

What FVR is—and what it is not

Feline viral rhinotracheitis is the upper-respiratory and eye disease associated with FHV-1. It is one part of the broader feline respiratory disease complex, in which viruses and bacteria can occur alone or together. Feline calicivirus is another principal viral cause, and similar signs can have other infectious causes. A symptom, or even a positive test, needs interpretation by a veterinarian rather than being treated as a complete diagnosis.

FHV-1 commonly affects the nose, sinuses, and eyes. Cornell Feline Health Center reports estimates that up to 97% of cats are exposed during their lifetime; up to 80% of exposed cats develop lifelong infection, and up to 45% of infected cats periodically shed virus, usually when stressed. These are published estimates, not a prediction for an individual cat.

Signs owners may notice

  • Frequent sneezing and nasal congestion
  • Rhinitis, with nasal discharge that may become thick or crusted
  • Conjunctivitis, tearing, swollen eyelids, or eye discharge
  • Fever, depression, and reduced appetite
  • Salivation or mouth sores when another respiratory pathogen is involved
  • Corneal inflammation or ulcers (keratitis), which can threaten vision and need veterinary treatment

Merck Veterinary Manual says milder signs may last 5 to 10 days, while severe disease can continue for up to 6 weeks. Duration varies with age, immune status, concurrent infections, and complications.

Can my cat live a normal life with feline herpes?

Usually, yes. Cornell notes that infected cats carry FHV-1 for life and may develop recurring respiratory or eye disease, but flare-ups are often mild and self-resolving. VCA’s owner guidance says most cats respond well to medical management and lead normal lives. The practical goal is not to eliminate a virus that can remain latent; it is to reduce how often recurrences happen and how severe they become.

Serious illness and death are uncommon but can occur, particularly in cats with other health problems. Young kittens and older cats generally have a less favorable outlook than otherwise healthy adults. A cat’s personal prognosis depends on examination findings, hydration and nutrition, eye involvement, age, and concurrent disease, so your veterinarian is the right person to assess risk.

How veterinarians diagnose FVR

Diagnosis combines the pattern of signs with an examination and, when useful, tests such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or virus isolation. Testing can help in selected cases, but FHV-1 can be latent and a result does not by itself explain every symptom or prove that all respiratory signs come from herpesvirus. Your veterinarian may also look for corneal ulcers, dehydration, secondary bacterial infection, or another member of the respiratory disease complex.

What you can do at home

Home care should support the plan your veterinarian gives you; it should not replace an examination when a cat is deteriorating. Nutrition and hydration are central because a blocked nose reduces a cat’s ability to smell food, while fever and discharge increase fluid needs.

Keep food and water going

  • Offer strongly scented, palatable food in small, frequent portions if your veterinarian has not restricted the diet.
  • Provide several clean water options and monitor whether your cat is drinking and urinating normally.
  • Ask the clinic for advice promptly if appetite is falling rather than waiting for complete refusal.

Do not force-feed, syringe fluids, or add supplements without veterinary instructions; aspiration and inappropriate fluids can cause harm.

Clean discharge gently

Use materials and technique recommended by the clinic to wipe nasal or eye discharge. Avoid human cold medicines, decongestants, essential oils, and leftover eye drops. Some eye problems associated with FHV-1, especially corneal ulcers, worsen with unsuitable medication.

Ask about humidification—not a do-it-yourself protocol

Merck says a veterinarian may recommend mist or nebulization, or saline nose drops, to loosen hard secretions. If your veterinarian specifically advises a nebulizer for cats, ask which device, solution, session length, and cleaning procedure are appropriate. A consumer device is optional veterinary equipment, not a substitute for diagnosis, oxygen, fluids, or prescribed treatment.

Give prescribed medicines exactly as directed

Depending on findings, a veterinarian may use antiviral medication for some acute respiratory or corneal cases and antibiotics when a secondary bacterial infection is suspected. Antibiotics do not treat FHV-1 itself. Medication handling can stress some cats and may aggravate bouts of keratitis or conjunctivitis, so tell the clinic if dosing is causing a struggle and do not start, stop, or change a medicine without instructions.

When a cat needs more intensive veterinary support

Contact a veterinarian promptly for any of the following:

  • Breathing difficulty, pronounced effort, or inability to rest comfortably
  • Signs of dehydration, marked weakness, or worsening depression
  • Inability or refusal to eat, or repeated vomiting that prevents fluids from staying down
  • Increasing eye pain, squinting, cloudiness, or a visible change on the cornea
  • Rapid deterioration, especially in a kitten, senior cat, or cat with another illness

Merck describes oxygen for great difficulty breathing, injected fluids for dehydration, and additional medication or a feeding tube when a cat will not eat. These are clinic decisions; there is no universal home threshold that safely replaces an examination.

Can FVR flare up again?

Yes. After the initial illness, FHV-1 remains latent in nerve tissue. Reactivation can produce another bout of eye or respiratory disease, particularly after stress. Cornell lists crowding, surgery, moving, and introducing new cats among situations associated with recurring eye disease. The AAFP/ISFM fact sheet also identifies stress as a common setting for reactivation.

Lower the household stress load

  • Keep feeding, medication, and sleep routines predictable.
  • Provide hiding places, elevated resting areas, and separate resources for cats that do not get along.
  • Introduce new cats gradually rather than changing the social group abruptly.
  • Plan ahead with your veterinarian for boarding, surgery, travel, or other predictable stressors.

Stress reduction can reduce triggers; it cannot guarantee that a flare will never recur.

Is feline herpes contagious to my other cats?

Yes, especially during active disease. FHV-1 spreads mainly through direct contact with infected ocular, nasal, or oral secretions and through contaminated objects. The AAFP/ISFM fact sheet (2013) describes the virus as relatively labile outside the cat and infectious for less than 24 hours; it says aerosol spread is not of major importance. Merck also notes that respiratory pathogens can move in small droplets and on contaminated objects, and that recovering cats may shed virus for months. These statements describe different parts of transmission risk, so do not assume that ordinary room air is the main route or that a recovered cat is automatically noninfectious.

VCA advises isolating an acutely affected cat from other cats. It reports that acute infection can be infectious during incubation and for up to three weeks after signs begin, while carrier cats may remain infective. Ask your veterinarian how long isolation should last for your household, because timing depends on the cats, clinical course, and testing.

A practical multi-cat hygiene plan

  1. Set up the sick cat in a separate, easy-to-clean room with dedicated bowls, litter equipment, bedding, and toys.
  2. Care for healthy cats first and the sick cat last, then wash hands and change contaminated clothing as your veterinarian recommends.
  3. Clean visible secretions and disinfect appropriate surfaces according to product directions and veterinary advice.
  4. Do not share bowls, grooming tools, bedding, or medication equipment between cats.
  5. Monitor every cat for sneezing, discharge, appetite change, or eye discomfort and call the clinic if signs appear.
  6. Quarantine a newly arrived cat for at least one to two weeks, as VCA recommends, while arranging a veterinary examination and vaccination plan.

Does the FVRCP vaccine prevent feline herpes?

Feline herpesvirus vaccination is part of core vaccination guidance, including for household cats that live indoors. Cornell’s vaccine guidance emphasizes that the schedule for an adult cat depends on age, health, previous vaccines, exposure risk, vaccine type and route, and local veterinary recommendations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The vaccine does not guarantee that a cat will avoid infection or lifelong latency. Cornell says vaccination significantly decreases disease severity and viral shedding; the AAFP/ISFM fact sheet says vaccines do not prevent infection or latency. Vaccination therefore lowers the expected impact of disease rather than acting as an absolute barrier.

Decision factor Why your veterinarian considers it
Age and health Kittens, seniors, and cats with medical conditions may need individualized timing.
Vaccination history Previous doses determine whether a kitten series, catch-up plan, or booster is appropriate.
Exposure setting Indoor-only living, boarding, shelters, travel, and group housing create different risks.
Vaccine type and route Available formulations and administration methods differ by jurisdiction and patient.
Current illness The veterinarian decides whether vaccination should wait until a cat is stable.

Merck summarizes prevention as a combination of recommended vaccination and control of environmental factors such as exposure to sick cats, overcrowding, and stress.

Should I give my cat lysine?

Do not treat lysine as a proven routine remedy. Cornell describes its use as controversial and cites studies suggesting it may be ineffective, could worsen symptoms, or might promote viral shedding. Ask the treating veterinarian before giving lysine or any supplement; do not purchase or dose it automatically because a cat has FVR.

Questions to ask at the next appointment

  • Does the examination fit FVR, or should we investigate another respiratory pathogen?
  • Are the eyes involved, and does my cat need a corneal-ulcer check?
  • How should I track food, water, urine, breathing, and discharge at home?
  • What signs mean I should call the same day or seek emergency care?
  • Should this cat be isolated, and when can supervised contact resume?
  • What vaccination schedule fits this cat’s age, health, history, and exposure setting?
  • Would antiviral treatment, nebulization, fluids, or nutritional support be appropriate?

The realistic outlook

A diagnosis of FVR changes management, not the possibility of companionship. Expect a lifelong latent infection with possible recurrences, keep veterinary instructions accessible, protect appetite and hydration, reduce stress, and limit exposure to other cats during active illness. With that approach, most affected cats can remain comfortable, active, and closely bonded with their families.
