1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet up one quiet, secure room before your new cat arrives, then let them settle and explore at their own pace. Keep food, water, litter, a hiding place and a bed in that room; avoid forcing contact; and expand access only as the cat shows signs of comfort. If your cat stops eating, has trouble breathing, strains to urinate or cannot urinate, contact a veterinarian promptly.
Prepare a quiet starter room
Choose a calm room you can close off from household traffic, visitors and other pets. Set it up before bringing the cat home so they have familiar essentials close by without being overwhelmed by the whole house.

- Put food and water in separate spots, with the litter tray as far away as practical, in a private location.
- Add a bed, toys and an accessible hiding place. A sturdy cardboard box can work; a hiding spot need not be a purchased product.
- Provide a secure carrier for the trip home. As the cat begins to explore, add safe elevated resting places if you can.
- Ask the shelter what food and litter the cat has been using, and keep those familiar choices at first when possible.
These setup recommendations are consistent with Cats Protection’s guidance for bringing a cat home and the Humane Society Silicon Valley adoption guide.
What to do when you bring the cat home
- Carry the cat directly to the prepared room in a secure carrier.
- Set the carrier down, open its door and give the cat the choice to come out. Do not tip or pull them out.
- Keep the room quiet and let the cat investigate. Cats Protection suggests leaving a new cat alone for about an hour initially, but use the cat’s behavior—not a timer—to decide when to approach.
- Check food, water and litter discreetly, then spend quiet time nearby without demanding interaction.
Make the first hours predictable: keep noise low, limit visitors and avoid repeated attempts to coax the cat out. The aim is to make the room feel safe, not to make the cat socialize on arrival.

Is it normal for a new cat to hide?
Yes. Hiding, avoiding people and eating only when alone can be responses to the stress of a move. Let the cat keep a safe hiding place; do not drag them out, reach in to grab them or force handling.
Sit quietly nearby and speak gently. If shyness is keeping the cat from eating, Cats Protection suggests placing the food closer to the hiding place and leaving the room. Watch for gradual changes, such as eating, grooming, using the litter tray, exploring, playing or choosing to approach you. Persistent stress without improvement is a reason to ask a veterinarian for advice.
There is no reliable deadline that fits every cat. Cats Protection notes that some settle in hours while others take weeks or longer. Humane Society Silicon Valley offers the first week or two in a safe room as an example. Treat these as possibilities, not a schedule every cat should meet.

When to let the cat explore more of the home
Wait until the cat is eating, using the litter tray and showing signs of growing comfort in the starter room. Then open access gradually, supervising early exploration. You might open one or two additional spaces at a time while keeping the starter room available as a retreat.
Keep hiding places and safe elevated resting spots available as the cat explores. If they become fearful, reduce access and give them more time in the familiar room before trying again. Moving at the cat’s pace is more useful than following a fixed calendar.
How to introduce a newly adopted cat to resident cats
Keep the new cat separated from resident pets at first. For resident cats, use stages: allow them to become familiar with each other’s scents, create positive associations around the closed door, then offer visual access through a secure barrier before trying supervised meetings. The American Humane Society’s introduction guidance also emphasizes gradual introductions.

- Start with separation. Give each cat their own space and resources.
- Exchange scents. Swap bedding or another familiar-smelling item between spaces.
- Pair the closed door with good things. Offer meals or treats on opposite sides of the door, at a distance where both cats can remain comfortable.
- Add visual access. Use a secure barrier so the cats can see one another without being able to rush or corner each other.
- Try supervised meetings. Proceed when both cats seem relaxed, and keep early meetings brief and calm.
If a cat refuses food near the door, repeatedly hisses or growls, or shows escalating distress, increase the distance or return to an earlier stage. Do not leave them together unsupervised until they are getting along reliably. Introduction timelines are examples; the cats’ responses should set the pace.

Keep the cat’s existing diet if possible while they settle in. If a food change is needed, introduce it gradually rather than switching all at once, as the Humane Society Silicon Valley guide advises.
A cat may eat less when feeding areas are noisy or busy, when other animals are nearby, when dishes are dirty, or when the litter box is close to food. Cornell’s feeding guidance identifies these as possible deterrents. Keep feeding resources in a quiet place and avoid unnecessary changes during the transition.

When to call a veterinarian
Do not assume that a cat’s refusal to eat is only an adjustment issue. Cornell’s Feline Health Center says appetite loss can seriously affect an adult cat within 24 hours. VCA advises immediate veterinary attention if a cat has not eaten properly for 24 hours. If your cat is refusing food, contact your veterinarian for advice rather than waiting out a full day; a veterinarian can assess the cause and decide what care is needed. See Cornell’s guidance on anorexia and VCA’s signs-of-illness guidance.
Seek urgent veterinary help for breathing difficulty, straining in the litter box or lack of urination. Do not force food into the cat’s mouth unless a veterinarian has given you a specific feeding plan.
Arrange a routine veterinary visit
Humane Society Silicon Valley recommends scheduling a visit with the cat’s family veterinarian within one to two weeks of adoption to review records and discuss care needs. Your veterinarian can advise on future vaccines, screening and any individual health concerns; the appropriate plan depends on the cat.
