If a seagull (gull) looks injured or distressed, give it space, keep children and pets away, and call the wildlife authority or rehabilitator responsible for your area. Don’t chase, touch, feed, water, treat, or transport it unless a local professional tells you what to do. Approaching a bird that may not need help can stress or injure it—and put you at risk, too.
What to do first
- Make space. Move people and pets back. Don’t surround, corner, chase, or try to move the gull.
- Look from a distance. Note its location and what you can see without approaching. A bird standing or resting is not necessarily injured.
- Call for local advice. Contact the wildlife agency, a qualified wildlife rehabilitator, or the animal-welfare service responsible for that location. Explain the bird’s condition and any immediate hazards, and follow their instructions.
- Wait for direction. Don’t attempt capture, first aid, feeding, watering, confinement, or transport unless a professional specifically directs you to do so.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife advises: “DO NOT intervene without proper guidance from a trained professional (i.e., capture, handle, confine, feed/water).” Its rehabilitation guidance also cautions against dropping off wildlife unless instructed.

Choose the response for what you see
Standing or resting, with no clear injury
Keep your distance and observe without feeding or trying to move the bird. If you remain concerned, call a local wildlife professional and describe what you see. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife notes that wild animals rarely need human help and that approaching or handling them can harm both animal and person.
Visible injury or signs of distress
Contact a wildlife authority or rehabilitator and give the bird’s location and a plain description of its condition. Don’t try to provide first aid or capture it unless the professional instructs you.

Near traffic, a crowd, or another immediate hazard
Keep yourself and others safe; don’t enter traffic or chase the bird. Tell the local authority what the hazard is and ask how to proceed. A gull’s proximity to danger does not make an untrained capture attempt safe.
Apparently sick or dead
Don’t touch the bird. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises contacting a state wildlife agency or rehabilitator about a sick or dead bird found in a yard. Follow local public-health and wildlife instructions, which may differ by location.

Why not to handle, feed, or move a gull
Gulls can injure people with their bills, and a pursuit or capture attempt may add stress or cause harm. The UK RSPCA specifically includes gulls among animals people should not try to handle or transport. California’s guidance likewise says not to intervene without trained direction. These sources reflect local guidance, not a single rule that applies everywhere; for a general safe response, call first and follow the responsible local professional’s advice.

Guidance differs: Western Australia’s WA Wildlife describes a shallow dish of water only in a conditional procedure after a bird has been safely captured, while New Zealand’s Department of Conservation says not to feed or treat sick wildlife. Since capture itself may be inappropriate, ask the local authority before offering anything.

If several birds are sick or dead
Check local wildlife or public-health reporting instructions promptly. Reporting thresholds and contact channels are jurisdiction-specific. For example, New Zealand’s Department of Conservation says to report three or more sick or dead wild birds to Biosecurity New Zealand’s Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline. Separate UK coastal guidance calls out three or more dead birds when at least one is a gull, swan, goose, or duck. Don’t apply either threshold outside its stated location; use the authority responsible where you found the birds.
