Before pickup, prepare a secure carrier, the cat’s current food, food and water bowls, a litter box with familiar litter, a stable scratching surface, a few toys, and a quiet place to rest. Set these up in one calm home-base room, then let the cat explore the rest of the home gradually.
What to buy before your cat comes home
Start with the supplies that make the trip home and the first days safer and less disruptive. Ask the shelter or previous caretaker about the cat’s established food, litter, and preferences; familiar options can make the transition easier.
- Secure carrier: Choose one that fits the individual cat, closes securely, has ventilation, is easy to clean, and is sturdy enough for travel and future veterinary visits. International Cat Care’s carrier advice comes from a kitten booklet and favors solid, strong plastic carriers for kittens; select a suitable size and design for your cat. - Food and water bowls: Have the cat’s current food ready if possible, along with bowls for food and fresh, clean water. Wash and refill the water bowl daily. Choose food for the cat’s life stage and health, asking a veterinarian if you are unsure.
- Litter box and familiar litter: Provide a box the cat can enter comfortably and place it somewhere quiet and accessible. Begin with the litter the cat already uses when possible.
- Scratching surface: Buy a sturdy, stable post or pad. The ASPCA describes a post at least three feet high and suggests rough coverings such as sisal, burlap, or tree bark. A stable pad is another option if that better suits your space or the cat’s preference.
- Resting spot: Set out a quiet, dry place with a soft blanket or towel. A purchased bed is optional; a simple box can also provide a place to settle. Wash bedding regularly.
Useful additions for the first weeks
Toys
A small selection of interactive toys gives you ways to play together. Supervise toys that could be chewed or swallowed, and put them away when needed.
Brush or comb
Regular brushing can remove loose coat and reduce shedding. The right tool and how often to use it depend on the cat’s coat.

Identification
An ID tag and microchip can help reunite a lost cat with its owner. If you use a collar, choose a safety collar that can release if it catches on something.
Veterinary care
Arrange a veterinary examination and ask about vaccinations, parasite prevention, and spay or neuter status for this particular cat. Do not buy or give medication without veterinary direction; the ASPCA advises against giving medication unless prescribed by a veterinarian.

Set up a quiet home base
Choose a calm room where the cat can start with food, water, litter, bedding, and toys. Keep the room quiet and give the cat time to settle; open access to other rooms gradually as it becomes comfortable. Before arrival, secure cords and windows and check whether your plants are toxic to cats. A perch can be a useful addition if there is a safe place for one.

Guidance varies, so consider both the number of cats and the layout of your home. The ASPCA recommends one box per floor in a multilevel home and scooping solid waste at least daily. The Humane Society of the United States recommends one box per cat plus one extra, placed in a quiet, low-traffic area. Treat these as practical starting points and adapt to your home and the cat’s access and comfort.

What not to overbuy or assume
- Do not switch food without a reason. Start with the established diet when possible; let life stage, health, and veterinary advice guide food decisions.
- Do not buy medicines as a precaution. Ask the veterinarian which preventive care is appropriate for this cat.
- Do not rely on old cost estimates as current prices. The ASPCA’s 2021 initial one-time estimates were $40 for a carrier, $20 for a litter box, and $15 for a scratching post. These are historical figures, not current shopping prices.
- Keep treats modest. The ASPCA’s undated general cat-care guidance recommends that treats make up no more than 5–10% of the diet; this is its recommendation, not a population statistic.
