Give your cat a quiet place to retreat before guests arrive, and let the cat decide whether to come out or meet anyone. Hiding is a common way for cats to manage unfamiliar people; the goal is to help your cat feel safe, not to make it greet visitors.
Why cats hide when visitors arrive
Unfamiliar people, activity, and noise can make a cat wary. Some cats stay out of sight until the room settles down. Prepare a safe retreat before guests arrive
Choose a familiar, quiet spot where your cat can stay undisturbed. It might be a spare bedroom with water and a litter box, or a hiding place your cat already uses. Keep the route to the retreat open, and tell guests not to follow the cat, reach into its hiding place, or pull it out. A covered bed or hideaway can be an option if your cat already finds it comfortable, but it is not required: a familiar, undisturbed hiding spot or separate room can serve the same purpose. Keep the refuge available throughout the visit.
Let your cat set the pace
Give your cat time and the choice to stay hidden, explore, or approach. Do not pick it up and carry it to guests, and ask visitors not to reach toward it. The ASPCA recommends patience and allowing shy cats to interact on their own terms (Undercover Cats).

If your cat comes near, visitors can stay calm and allow it to initiate any further contact. If it walks away or hides, let it go. A treat may support a positive experience when offered at a distance the cat tolerates; do not use food to lure it out of its refuge or pressure it into a greeting. Treats are optional, and the cat should remain free to disengage.
Reduce stress instead of forcing exposure
If your cat seems frightened, reduce the intensity of the situation: ask guests to lower their voices, limit commotion near the refuge, and give the cat more space. Do calming products solve visitor anxiety?
No product should replace a safe retreat, patience, and cat-led interaction. International Cat Care says synthetic facial pheromone diffusers or sprays may help reduce distress in veterinary waiting and consulting rooms, while emphasizing that they do not replace suitable facilities and cat-friendly handling (International Cat Care: Feline-friendly clinic). That clinical-room guidance does not establish that a home diffuser will make a shy cat comfortable with visitors.
There is no established product comparison showing that a particular bed, treat, toy, or pheromone brand helps cats tolerate guests.
