What to Do If You Find a Bear Cub Alone

A bear cub alone is not necessarily orphaned. Leave the area quietly, keep pets and people away, and contact local wildlife officials if it appears injured or distressed.

If you find a bear cub alone, calmly and quietly leave the area, keep people and pets away, and do not touch, feed, move, or try to rescue it. A mother bear may be nearby or away foraging, so a cub without its mother in sight is not necessarily orphaned. If the cub appears injured or distressed, or remains alone in circumstances that concern you, contact the wildlife agency responsible for that location and follow its advice.

What to do right away

  1. Back away and leave quietly. Do not linger to watch or approach for a better photo. Giving the area space lets the mother return without people nearby.
  2. Keep people and pets away. If you can do so safely, alert others to avoid the area and take your dog with you. Do not let a pet investigate the cub.
  3. Do not handle or care for the cub. Do not feed it, offer formula, pet food or fruit, or try to catch, move or transport it. Inappropriate food can harm a cub and accustom it to people; capture attempts can injure it or separate it from its mother.
  4. Contact local wildlife professionals if there is cause for concern. From a safe distance, note the location and what you observed. If taking a photo would require approaching or delaying your departure, skip it. Ask the local agency whether a photo would help; Virginia’s reporting guide, for example, requests photos for its process, but this is not a universal requirement.

A mother bear may be close even when you cannot see her. North Carolina wildlife officials say a mother may return after foraging, and Alberta says female bears may leave cubs alone for up to 15 hours while searching for food. Those examples do not establish a universal waiting period: leave the area rather than waiting beside the cub, and ask the local agency what to do if you are unsure.

When to call, and whom to contact

Call the wildlife agency responsible for the place where you found the cub if it appears injured, ill, weak, unusually unafraid, unable to move normally, persistently distressed, or still alone after the local agency’s recommended observation period. Do not approach to examine it or try to diagnose what is wrong. Share the precise location and a concise description of its behavior.

For an immediate threat to a person, move to safety and call local emergency services. In California, the Tahoe-area guidance directs people to 911 or the local sheriff for an immediate threat; routine bear-health concerns go to wildlife officials instead.

How to tell whether a cub needs help

Being alone when you see it is not enough to conclude that a cub is abandoned. The mother may be out of sight or away foraging. North Carolina says cubs seen alone are rarely orphaned, but the agency does not give a percentage that can be applied elsewhere.

California’s Tahoe-area guidance lists weakness, a skinny appearance, reluctance or inability to flee, and unusual “dog-like” behavior as reasons to seek professional evaluation. A head tilt or tremors may be signs of a neurological problem. These signs are not a diagnosis, and they do not make it safe to approach the bear.

Size is not a reliable stand-alone test. California’s Tahoe Interagency Bear Team gives approximate regional rule-of-thumb weights of 10–15 pounds for a cub of the year and 50–150 pounds for yearlings; a small bear may also be ill or orphaned. Do not get closer to estimate its size.

Why there is no universal wait time

Agency advice varies by place and circumstance, so do not use one fixed countdown to decide whether a cub is orphaned. North Carolina says mothers often return in a few hours; Alberta reports that females may leave cubs for up to 15 hours while foraging; and California’s Tahoe guidance advises calling if a small cub’s mother has not been seen after a few hours.

Virginia’s internal customer-service guide gives state-specific thresholds for its helpline: more than 12 consecutive hours in January–March, 24 hours in April, 48 hours in May, and 96 hours in June or later. Those Virginia thresholds are not a rule for other places. If you are uncertain, contact the local wildlife agency instead of staying near, handling or moving the cub.

What wildlife authorities may do

Wildlife staff can assess whether intervention is appropriate and arrange trained care when needed. The outcome depends on the cub and local policy; a report does not guarantee rehabilitation.

In North Carolina, the state program places orphaned cubs with licensed rehabilitators for specialized food and limited human interaction. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission says its program dates to 1976 and that rehabilitated cubs are generally released at about 7–8 months, in early fall when natural foods are available.

Alberta’s policy considers return to the wild first when appropriate, followed by rehabilitation and release. Zoo placement may be considered when other options are unavailable or unsuitable; euthanasia is described as a last resort under the policy’s stated conditions. These are regional examples, not predictions of what will happen to an individual cub elsewhere.
