Ask your veterinarian before changing the routine, especially if your dog is stiff, tiring more easily, or managing a health problem. A veterinarian can check for causes of reduced mobility and help tailor activity to your dog’s current ability; the guidance here is not a personalized exercise prescription.
Start with a veterinary check and a plan for your dog
Age alone does not explain every change in stamina. Stiffness, limping, reluctance to walk or play, trouble rising or using stairs, and changes in posture can point to pain or osteoarthritis. Reduced stamina can also have other medical causes, including heart disease. An examination helps identify what is limiting your dog and which activities are suitable. See Cornell’s overview of canine osteoarthritis and VCA’s guidance on health considerations for senior dogs.
Before starting a new exercise routine, ask your veterinarian for an individualized plan. That matters particularly if your dog has known joint problems or has become less active. VCA recommends a physical examination and an exercise plan suited to the individual dog in its dog-walking safety guidance.
Choose low-impact activities and an easy pace
Controlled movement is often easier to adjust than strenuous play. Cornell lists leash walks and swimming as possible low-impact activities in osteoarthritis management. Whether either is appropriate depends on your dog’s health and comfort; ask your veterinarian before adding or increasing activity.

Make walks manageable and rewarding
Choose a simple route and a cooler time of day. Carry water, allow your dog to sniff at their own pace, and adjust the distance and difficulty to how they are doing now—not to what they managed when they were younger. A sniff-focused outing can provide stimulation without making distance or speed the goal. Reassess as your dog’s abilities change; some dogs may keep going to please their person even when the outing has become too much. Cornell offers this practical advice in its senior-dog enrichment guidance.
Use swimming with care
For a dog who is comfortable in the water and cleared for swimming, choose warm weather, keep swims short, and avoid strong currents. A long line may help the dog return safely where appropriate. Swimming is not automatically safer or suitable for every older dog; follow your veterinarian’s advice and watch your dog’s response.

Increase activity only with veterinary guidance
VCA gives a gradual starting example for dogs with osteoarthritis: 10 minutes of walking three times a day, with weekly increases if stiffness does not increase. This is an example from osteoarthritis guidance, not a universal target for senior dogs. Ask your veterinarian what starting point and progression fit your dog. If stiffness worsens as activity increases, contact the veterinarian to discuss the cause and pain-management plan. See VCA’s exercise guidance for dogs with osteoarthritis.
Know when to pause and when to call the vet
During the activity
Stop and offer a rest if your dog is out of breath or repeatedly tries to sit or lie down. Do not urge them to finish the route or keep playing. VCA describes these as reasons to stop and let a dog rest in its play and exercise guidance.

Afterward and between outings
Pay attention to how your dog moves and behaves after activity. Unusual difficulty lying down or getting up, irritability or excitability, unusually slow responses to familiar cues, or a changed posture—such as a “sloppy” sit—can be signs the session was too much. VCA advises holding off on exercise and arranging a veterinary examination if these signs appear. Also contact your veterinarian about new or persistent stiffness, limping, reluctance to walk or play, or difficulty with stairs; these changes deserve assessment rather than being assumed to be normal aging.

Small environmental changes can reduce the effort required to move around. Cornell lists nonslip rugs and ramps among home adaptations for dogs with osteoarthritis. A ramp may help with a specific obstacle, such as access to a couch or vehicle, but it does not treat arthritis and must suit the dog and setting. Consider the dog’s size, the height and location, and whether the ramp is stable and has adequate traction; no single design is right for every dog.

Activity need not mean exercise alone. Food puzzles can engage a dog’s nose and mind, while a relaxed sniff-centered outing offers a gentler way to explore. Preferences vary: some older dogs enjoy activities, while others prefer quiet company. Choose what your dog enjoys without pushing through signs of discomfort. Cornell discusses these options in its senior-dog enrichment guidance.
