One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf your dog has started avoiding stairs, furniture, or jumping into the car, treat it as a possible change in mobility—not simply a training problem or an inevitable part of aging. Pain, including osteoarthritis, is one possible cause, but the behavior alone cannot identify what is wrong. Note what you’re seeing, avoid making your dog repeat painful movements, and arrange a veterinary assessment if the change is new, persistent, or worsening.
Why is my dog suddenly afraid to go up stairs?
A sudden refusal may look like fear, but reluctance can also be a sign that climbing hurts or feels difficult. Osteoarthritis is one possible cause: it is a chronic, progressive joint disease, and difficulty with stairs or jumping can be among its signs. Previous orthopedic problems or injuries may contribute. Other conditions can also cause pain, limping, or reluctance, so behavior alone cannot establish a diagnosis. Cornell’s osteoarthritis guidance and VCA’s pain guidance describe pain and mobility changes as reasons for veterinary attention.
Look for a broader pattern rather than focusing on stairs alone. Possible accompanying signs include stiffness, limping or an altered gait, taking longer to rise, reduced interest in exercise, sensitivity to touch, or changes in behavior. A short video of your dog moving naturally at home can help your veterinarian understand what you have observed; don’t prompt a movement that appears painful. See VCA’s signs of osteoarthritis.
Why won’t my dog jump on the couch anymore?
A change in jumping can have the same range of possible explanations as a change in stair use: discomfort, altered mobility, or another problem that needs assessment. The key clues are when it began, whether it is getting worse, and whether other movements or behaviors have changed. Do not repeatedly ask your dog to jump to see whether the problem persists.

VCA Animal Hospitals puts the age question plainly: “Age is not a disease.” A dog’s age may be relevant to a veterinarian’s assessment, but a new mobility change should not be dismissed as normal aging. VCA’s osteoarthritis guidance discusses signs owners may notice.
Is my dog in pain if they won’t use the stairs?
Possibly, but refusal by itself does not prove pain. A veterinarian needs to evaluate your dog to determine the cause. Arrange an appointment for a new, continuing, or worsening reluctance—especially if you also notice stiffness, limping, difficulty rising, less activity, or a behavior change. Your veterinarian will take a history and examine your dog; depending on the findings, imaging, laboratory testing, or referral to a specialist may be appropriate. The investigation can depend on factors including age, breed, size, history, signs, and examination findings. Cornell’s guide to a veterinary visit for a limping dog explains what that assessment may involve.

What to note before the appointment
- When the reluctance began, whether it was sudden or gradual, and whether it is worsening.
- Which movements seem difficult: stairs, jumping, walking, rising, or exercise. Note any apparent favoring of a leg.
- Any recent trauma, unusually strenuous activity, or change in routine.
- Changes in energy, behavior, or sensitivity to touch, and any medication already given.
- A brief video of ordinary movement, if you can take one without encouraging painful activity.
This history and safe home observation can give the veterinarian useful context; they do not replace an examination.
What should I do right now?
If your dog is limping or appears painful, keep activity quiet while you contact a veterinarian for advice. Do not force stairs or jumps, or test the problem with repeated attempts. Restrict activity, and do not try to examine or manipulate a severely painful limb. Do not give human medication or leftover medication from your medicine cabinet unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to. VCA’s first-aid guidance for limping dogs and VCA’s arthritis guidance cover these cautions.

When is reluctance to climb or jump an emergency?
- Seek emergency care: your dog cannot stand or walk without help, has an obvious fracture, or has a mobility problem after major trauma. VCA urgent-care guidance identifies these as emergency concerns.
- Call a veterinary service promptly: VCA urgent-care guidance recommends evaluation for acute pain or limping that does not resolve in less than an hour. Call your local clinic or emergency hospital for instructions suited to your location and situation.
- Arrange a veterinary appointment: the reluctance is new, continues, or worsens, whether or not you see other signs. Stiffness, limping, difficulty rising, reduced activity, or behavior changes add to the reason to seek assessment.
How can I help my dog get into the car?
First avoid making your dog jump into the vehicle while the movement seems painful or difficult. Ask your veterinarian what access is appropriate for your dog and how to manage activity while the cause is being assessed.
A ramp may provide an alternative route into a car, onto a couch, or onto a bed. Choose one that fits the destination and available space, stays stable, has a surface your dog can grip, and offers a slope your dog can use comfortably. A ramp is an access aid, not a diagnosis or treatment, and it is not a reason to delay veterinary assessment.

Non-slip rugs or traction mats may help cover slick areas at home. Consider where the slippery surfaces are and whether the rug or mat stays in place. Cornell includes ramps and non-slip rugs among lifestyle measures that may be used in managing osteoarthritis; its guidance also discusses weight control and low-impact activity. Ask your veterinarian which activity and weight recommendations, if any, suit your dog.
