How to Help Australia’s Birds on the Move: Windows, Wetlands and Wildlife Reports

Australian bird migration includes short north–south shifts, seasonal movements and changes in elevation. Here are practical, evidence-based ways to make windows safer, protect habitat, contribute sightings and follow current H5 advice.

Australia’s moving birds need practical help in the places people control: make hazardous glass visible, protect the habitat they use, record sightings, and respond safely when groups of birds are sick or dead. Movement is not limited to spectacular journeys between countries. Robins, fantails and silvereyes may shift north or south; Noisy Pittas can move from uplands to coastal lowlands; and many land birds travel relatively short, changeable distances.

What “migration” means for Australian birds

Bird movement in Australia covers a continuum. Some species make very long journeys, while others move a few valleys, slopes or hundred kilometres in response to season, food, weather and breeding conditions. A bird does not have to cross an ocean to be a migrant, and the same species may travel a different distance or direction in different years.

BirdLife Australia’s 12 May 2026 summary of a University of Queensland Fuller Lab study illustrates this flexibility. Researchers used weather-radar data from 10 radars along Australia’s eastern coastline, covering 16 years, to detect movements that ordinary field observations can miss. The summary reports that most movement occurs in autumn and spring, but it also stresses substantial variation between years and identifies short-distance and altitudinal migration as well as north–south travel.

North–south movement

Robins, fantails and silvereyes are examples of latitudinal migrants. Individuals may move north in cooler months and return south as conditions improve, but the distance and timing are not fixed appointments on a calendar. Local rainfall, flowering, insect abundance and temperature can alter when birds leave and where they stop.

Movement up and down a slope

Noisy Pittas demonstrate altitudinal migration. BirdLife Australia’s account describes birds moving from higher elevations towards coastal lowlands, with observed movements occurring mostly below 600 metres above sea level. Protecting both ends of that route matters: a forest patch on a ridge and lowland vegetation near the coast can be parts of one seasonal habitat network.

Seasonal examples at different scales

  • Sacred Kingfishers: spend winter in the north of their range and return south in spring to breed.
  • Far Eastern Curlews: provide a contrast as very long-distance migrants, showing that Australian bird movement ranges from local shifts to international journeys.
  • Many Australian land birds: travel relatively short distances rather than following a single, continent-wide migration route.

These patterns explain why a quiet garden, creek edge or roadside tree can matter even when it is not a famous stopover. A site may be used only during one part of a bird’s annual cycle, and use may be intermittent from one year to the next.

First priority: stop birds hitting your windows

Glass can look like open flight space. Birds may see reflected sky or vegetation, a transparent path through a building, or an indoor plant apparently continuing through the window. Risk increases with large panes, glass corners, glass fencing, reflective windows and vegetation close to the glass.

The effective principle in BirdLife Australia’s window-collision guidance is complete, repeated coverage on the problem surface. A few decorative decals on a large pane leave most of the hazard unchanged. Use a high-contrast pattern across the outside of the glass, with marks no more than 5–10 centimetres apart; vertical stripes are identified as the most effective pattern in that guidance.

Window-treatment options

Method Coverage and spacing Permanence Installation and outside-surface suitability
Exterior tape or paint stripes Cover the entire pane; keep vertical marks within 5–10 cm Temporary to seasonal Low effort; applied directly outside, where reflections occur
Dot or grid pattern Repeat over the full glass area, not just at eye level Temporary Low effort; soap, tempera paint or clay can be used on the exterior
Decals or stickers Must form a dense repeated pattern at the 5–10 cm maximum spacing; isolated stickers are insufficient Temporary to medium-term Easy to install; choose products intended for the outside surface
UV markers Use a repeated pattern covering the pane; visibility to birds can differ from human visibility Temporary Moderate effort; follow the product’s exterior-use directions
Fly screens Screen the whole opening so the glass is no longer the direct flight surface More permanent Higher installation effort; suitable where a frame can be fitted outside the glass
One-way transparent film Apply across the problem pane according to the manufacturer’s coverage directions More permanent Moderate installation effort; use an exterior-rated solution
Bright shade cloth Hang across the full hazardous area Seasonal or removable Moderate effort; works where a secure external support is available

A practical installation sequence

  1. Find the actual hazard. Look for feathers, a stunned bird, repeated impacts or a clear flight line between nearby vegetation and the pane. Inspect glass corners and fencing as well as ordinary windows.
  2. Work on the outside surface. Reflections are formed externally, so an interior-only pattern may not break up the apparent sky or foliage. Use a safe ladder and avoid working at height without appropriate support.
  3. Choose a repeated, high-contrast design. Vertical stripes are the preferred option in BirdLife Australia’s guidance. A grid, dots, tape, paint, clay, soap or suitable decals can work when coverage is continuous.
  4. Measure the gaps. Keep spaces no more than 5–10 cm apart across the whole pane. Do not assume that a handful of large stickers is equivalent to a pattern.
  5. Check the view from outside. Walk to the approach angle a bird would use. If large unmarked areas still reflect sky or vegetation, extend the pattern.
  6. Maintain it. Replace faded tape, washed-off paint or damaged screens before the pattern becomes patchy.

For existing bird baths or feeders, BirdLife Australia’s collision guidance places them within 50 cm of a window so birds cannot build up high speed before reaching the glass. However, the current Australian Government H5 guidance says not to feed wild birds or other wildlife: congregating animals can increase disease transmission, and supplementary feeding can alter behaviour and affect health. Treat collision prevention and feeding as separate decisions; do not establish a feeder as a general conservation measure. Moving indoor plants out of the window’s view can also reduce the illusion of continuous habitat.

Protect the habitats birds depend on

A safe window helps one household hazard. Habitat protection operates at the scale of an entire route. The Australian Government identifies wetland habitat loss and degradation as a significant threat to migratory waterbirds and says conserving important sites in Australia and along migration routes is essential to their survival. Coastal development is among the pressures that can reduce feeding and resting areas.

Australia’s responsibilities extend beyond its borders through bilateral migratory-bird agreements with Japan, China and the Republic of Korea, alongside other international conservation arrangements. For residents, the most direct contribution is usually local: keep native vegetation, support credible restoration and avoid disturbing wetlands, mudflats, roosts and breeding areas.

Actions at home and in your neighbourhood

  • Retain or plant locally native trees, shrubs and groundcover that provide shelter and natural food.
  • Join a council, Traditional Owner organisation or community group restoring creek lines, wetlands, dunes or bushland.
  • Keep cats contained, especially at dawn, dusk and during seasonal movement, and keep dogs on a leash where native species are present.
  • Reduce disturbance around roosting or nesting birds. Watch from a distance rather than flushing a flock for a photograph.
  • Avoid supplementary feeding. Clean water and habitat are safer conservation tools than concentrating wild birds at a food source.

Turn sightings into useful conservation data

Reporting a bird is more valuable when it includes enough detail to be checked and compared. BirdLife Australia’s Birdata platform is used to identify trends, inform conservation status and actions, support land-management decisions, and provide evidence of species decline or recovery.

BirdLife Australia’s current Birdata page, accessed 13 October 2026, reports more than 30 million bird records, over 100,000 citizen scientists and almost 2.5 million surveys. Those are platform totals, not an independent measure of how representative the records are, but a well-described observation still adds to the evidence available to local researchers and land managers.

What to record

  • Species identification, or a photograph and description if you are uncertain.
  • Date, time and precise location, including the habitat type.
  • Number of birds and what they were doing: feeding, roosting, flying north, moving downhill or defending a territory.
  • Unusual behaviour, injuries, window strikes or a sudden change in numbers.
  • Weather and tide details when they are relevant to a wetland or shoreline observation.

Submit observations through Birdata or an appropriate BirdLife Australia survey. Never approach a sensitive nest or roost just to improve a record; a distant photograph and accurate location are preferable to disturbance.

What to do if birds are sick or dead

H5 avian influenza has been detected in Australia. The Australian Government page updated 3 September 2026 says human risk is currently low, but advice can change. Follow the latest official instructions rather than handling wildlife yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you find a group of sick or dead birds

  1. Keep your distance. Do not touch, collect or transport the birds.
  2. Keep children and pets away. Contain cats and keep dogs on a leash in areas with native wildlife.
  3. Record the date, time and location.
  4. Take photographs from a safe distance, if doing so does not disturb the animals.
  5. Report the group to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
  6. On public land, leave dead animals where they are unless authorities instruct otherwise.

Do not feed nearby wildlife while waiting for advice. Reduce movement through the site and avoid carrying contaminated material on footwear or equipment. Check the Australian Government’s current H5 guidance before acting because reporting arrangements and precautions may be updated.

A simple action plan by scale

Action What it addresses When to do it What success looks like
Pattern the entire problem window Immediate collision risk at a home, office or school As soon as strikes or vulnerable glass are identified Dense, high-contrast marks remain across the outside pane at 5–10 cm or less
Keep distance and report wildlife-health events Possible H5 or other disease risk Whenever a group of sick or dead birds is found People and pets avoid the site and authorities receive location, timing and photos
Restore and protect local habitat Food, shelter, breeding and stopover needs Across seasons and years Native vegetation and wetlands remain connected and disturbance is reduced
Submit Birdata observations Monitoring, trend analysis and management decisions After ordinary sightings or notable movements Records include reliable identification, location, date and behaviour

Why flexible migration changes the way you help

A calendar that says “migrating birds arrive in spring” is useful as a starting point, not a guarantee. Radar evidence described by BirdLife Australia shows that timing, distance and direction can vary between years. A garden may host a species briefly one autumn, remain quiet the next year and become important again after different weather conditions.

That uncertainty makes repeatable actions more useful than one-off enthusiasm. Keep glass patterned year-round where feasible, maintain habitat through dry and wet periods, record observations even when numbers seem ordinary, and treat unusual concentrations or mortality as information worth reporting. The result is a safer local environment and a better picture of how Australia’s birds actually move.
