To help cats get along, give them time, choice, and separate access to the things they need. Start a new-cat introduction with a secure room and closed-door separation, then move through scent exchange, calm activities on opposite sides of the door, brief visual contact, and supervised time together. Continue only while both cats are relaxed; if tension appears, return to an earlier stage. Some introductions take weeks or months, and peaceful coexistence—not friendship—is a valid outcome.

What getting along looks like

Cats do not all want feline company. A successful pairing may mean that each cat can eat, rest, use the litter box, play, and move around the home without being threatened or blocked. They do not have to cuddle, groom, or play together. If they prefer to ignore one another or keep their distance, let them.

Before bringing home another cat, consider both animals’ health, age, play drive, social history, adaptability, and experience with other cats. Also consider whether your home can provide a separate transition room, divided resources, and places where each cat can retreat. Related or already-bonded cats may be more likely to remain bonded, but a new pairing still needs a careful introduction.

Intercat tension is common, but the numbers are survey findings rather than a prediction for any particular home. The 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines cite surveys in which 62.2%–87.7% of multi-cat households had signs of tension; in one survey of 2,492 households, 87.7% reported tension. Of those reporting tension, 73.3% said it began when a new cat was introduced, 23.6% described a gradual change in a previously positive relationship, and 3.1% an abrupt change. These figures are summarized in the 2024 AAFP intercat tension guidelines.

How to introduce a new cat, step by step

Move forward at the cats’ pace, not according to a fixed calendar. Keep sessions brief and give each cat a way to leave. The International Cat Care kitten guidance notes that adjustment can take weeks or months.

1. Set up a transition room

Before arrival, prepare a room with a door that closes and latches. Furnish it with the new cat’s food, water, litter box, bed, scratching surface, toys, hiding places, and perches at different heights. Keep essential resources separate from the resident cat’s resources elsewhere in the home.

2. Let the new cat settle

Carry the cat into the room in a covered carrier, close the door, and open the carrier. Let the cat decide when to come out; do not carry the cat toward the resident cat or force an encounter. Give the newcomer time to explore and settle before beginning introductions.

3. Exchange scents

When the cats are settled, swap bedding or another soft item that carries each cat’s scent. Watch their responses. Continue only while neither cat reacts with distress; if a scent prompts a negative response, pause and give the cats more time apart.

  • CONTINUOUS CALMING SUPPORT: This plug‑in cat pheromone diffuser provides 24/7 support when used as directed. To get started, plug into an open outlet with the vents pointed upward, allow at least 4 feet of clearance, and follow the label instructions.

4. Pair the closed door with something positive

When both cats are relaxed around each other’s scent, offer a calm activity on opposite sides of the closed door, such as play or another activity each enjoys. Keep it short and allow either cat to leave. If a cat will not engage or shows tension, stop and return to scent-only familiarity.

5. Allow brief visual contact through a safe barrier

Once the cats remain calm near the closed door, try short visual sessions through a secure screen, glass door, extra-tall cat gate, or another barrier suited to your cats and home. The barrier must prevent contact and be stable; consider whether either cat can jump or climb it, and whether both can retreat. A gate is not a substitute for the closed, latched door used for initial separation.

Watch both cats throughout. If either becomes distressed or highly aroused, end the session and return to the previous stage for several days before trying again. Do not leave the barrier in place as the only separation if it cannot reliably keep the cats apart.

6. Try supervised proximity

Only after relaxed visual sessions, allow the cats to share space under close supervision. Keep a passive visual barrier, such as a piece of cardboard or a large towel, within reach so you can block their view if needed. Do not pick up an aroused cat or put your hands between fighting cats. If tension rises, use distance and the barrier to separate them, then reassess before trying again.

Increase time together gradually while both cats stay comfortable. Reduce supervision only as their peaceful coexistence becomes reliable. The AAFP advises against forcing cats to get along or letting them “work it out themselves”; advancing despite tension can contribute to longer-term problems.

Set up the home so no cat has to compete

Even a careful introduction can falter if one cat can control another’s access to essentials. Distribute food, water, litter boxes, scratching surfaces, resting places, and hiding spots through the cats’ living areas instead of clustering them in one location. The 2013 AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines support providing key resources in multiple, separated locations.

  • Provide safe places for every cat. The 2024 AAFP guidelines give one safe place per cat, plus one extra, as a general planning rule.
  • Offer hiding places and elevated perches, with more than one route in and out where possible. Vertical space can help cats avoid one another, but it does not replace separate food, water, or litter access.
  • Make sure no cat has to pass another to reach a resource or escape a resting spot.
  • Provide opportunities for play and predictable, positive interaction with people, adjusted to each cat’s needs.

Recognize tension before it becomes a fight

Conflict is not always a loud chase or a physical fight. One cat may stare or block a route while the other freezes, hides, or retreats. Other possible signs include hissing, growling, tail flicking, avoidance, urine marking, or a change in ordinary routines. Notice whether either cat is eating, resting, playing, or using the litter box differently.

If tension appears during an introduction, stop the session and return to the last stage where both cats were relaxed. Do not punish, shout at, or spray cats with water; discipline can increase fear and harm the relationship with the caregiver. When cats are highly aroused, avoid handling them: injury and redirected aggression are possible. Use distance and a passive barrier instead.

A sudden change in a previously comfortable relationship deserves attention. A new household stressor, disrupted routine, unfamiliar smell after a veterinary visit, pain, or illness may affect behavior. Do not assume an abrupt change is purely behavioral.

When to contact a veterinarian

Contact a veterinarian if a cat is injured, conflict persists despite slowing the introduction and improving the setup, or behavior changes abruptly. A medical assessment can help identify pain or illness that may be contributing. For complex or persistent cases, the AAFP guidelines recommend referral to a veterinary behaviorist when appropriate.

A synthetic feline pheromone diffuser may be considered as an optional adjunct, but the AAFP guidelines note that any effect may be subtle. It is not a replacement for separation, gradual introductions, or a suitable home setup; check that a product claiming pheromonal activity contains feline pheromone analogs.
