Choose a cat breeder by checking the kitten’s fit for your household, the cats’ health records, how the kittens are raised, and the written contract—not by relying on a registration, website, or reassuring conversation alone. Ask for evidence, take time to review it, and arrange an examination with your own veterinarian soon after bringing the kitten home.
Start by checking whether the breed and kitten fit your household
Before contacting breeders, learn about the breed’s typical care needs and health concerns. Consider whether its activity level, grooming needs, and other requirements suit your household and routine. Then ask about the individual kitten: a breed description cannot tell you everything about one kitten’s temperament or care needs.

Ask the breeder what to expect from this kitten and what it eats. Discuss any special care needs, too. A good match is about the cat’s needs and personality as well as appearance.

Use the same questions with each breeder so you can compare their answers and the records they provide.

- What are this breed’s characteristics and care needs, and what should I expect from this individual kitten?
- “How are the kittens raised?” What handling and social experiences have they had?
- Can I meet the kitten’s parents? If I cannot visit, can you show them by video?
- Can I review the parents’ health and genetic records, along with the kitten’s veterinary and vaccination records?
- Which health or genetic tests are relevant to this breed, and which have been done?
- What is the kitten eating, and does it have any special care needs?
- Can you explain the written health guarantee, including what it covers and what to do if a health concern appears?
- What does the contract say about returns or rehoming if the placement does not work out?
- Can you provide references from previous buyers?
The International Cat Association (TICA) includes “How are the kittens raised?” in its buyer guidance. Asking it opens a discussion about the kitten’s everyday environment and socialization, rather than just the breeder’s credentials.
How do I know if a cat breeder is responsible?
Look for answers supported by records and a breeder willing to discuss the cats’ health and daily care. If possible, visit and see where the kittens are raised and meet the parents. If a visit is not possible, TICA advises asking to see the parents by video. Ask the breeder to describe how the kittens are handled and socialized.

Review the parents’ health and genetic documentation and the kitten’s veterinary and vaccination records. Ask which tests are appropriate for the breed; there is no single testing list that applies to every cat breed. Verify breed-relevant testing with a veterinarian or a recognized breed-health authority.

Registration information or titles can be useful checks, but they do not by themselves establish that a breeder’s practices are responsible. TICA recommends checking breeder credibility and registry information alongside the kitten, its records, its care, and the contract.

Read the contract and health guarantee before paying
Ask to see the complete written agreement before you pay or sign. TICA’s breeder-finding guidance states: “A knowledgeable breeder sells a kitten only with a written contract that includes a health guarantee.” The wording of a guarantee varies, so do not assume a particular duration or coverage.
Check that you understand:
- Which health conditions or circumstances the guarantee covers.
- How long the guarantee lasts and how you must raise a concern or make a claim.
- What the agreement says about returns or rehoming if the placement does not work out.
Contract terms and animal-sale rules can depend on where you live. This is general buyer guidance, not a legal interpretation; seek local advice if you need help understanding your obligations or rights.

Pause if payment or communication feels pressured
TICA cautions buyers about sellers who require full payment before a specific kitten has been selected, communicate only by email or text, or request wire transfers or gift cards. These are warning signs, not proof of fraud. Pause, verify the seller’s identity and the kitten’s records independently, and consider comparing another breeder before sending money.
Arrange a veterinary examination after purchase
Plan for your own veterinarian to examine the kitten within a few days of purchase, as TICA recommends. Before bringing the kitten home, confirm whether the guarantee sets requirements for an examination or for reporting a health concern. Arrange the appointment promptly and bring the kitten’s veterinary records and contract.

Compare breeders on the same evidence
When you are deciding between breeders, compare the details rather than relying on a single credential or impression:
- Whether parent health and genetic records and the kitten’s veterinary records are available.
- What you can learn about the kittens’ environment, handling, and socialization.
- Whether the written contract and health guarantee clearly explain coverage and next steps.
- How openly the breeder answers questions and whether references are available.
- Whether the individual kitten’s needs fit your household.
A breeder’s willingness to answer questions matters most when it is backed by records and clear terms. If important information remains unclear, take time to verify it before committing.
