Help pets adjust by introducing them gradually: give each a separate safe space, exchange scents, allow brief visual contact through a barrier, and move to supervised meetings only while both remain calm. Friendship is not guaranteed; some animals need long-term separation or professional help.

Prepare the home before pets meet

Set up a quiet area for the newcomer with food, water, resting space and other essentials. If a cat is joining a dog household, make the cat’s safe area dog-free and provide a high perch or hiding place the dog cannot reach. A pet gate can help control access, but it is only a barrier—not a substitute for supervision.

Reduce competition by keeping valued resources apart. For cats, provide separate bowls, beds, litter trays, scratching posts and hiding places in different parts of the home. For dogs, manage access to food, resting areas, toys and other valued items; disputes can arise when one dog guards a resource. VCA describes this risk in its guidance on introducing a new dog to a resident dog.

Introduce pets in gradual stages

There is no single timetable that fits every household. Cats may need anywhere from a day to many weeks to move through scent exchange, protected visual contact and closer meetings. Let the animals’ behavior—not a calendar—determine when to proceed.

1. Exchange scents

Use a clean cloth to collect scent from one animal and place it where the other can investigate at its own pace. Repeat with each pet. Continue until the scent no longer prompts a notable reaction. Do not push the cloth toward an animal or force an investigation. Cats Protection’s advice on bringing a cat home describes scent exchange as an early step.

2. Let them explore separately

Allow each pet to explore the other’s area at a different time, while the other animal is elsewhere. This provides information about the newcomer’s scent without the pressure of face-to-face contact. VCA includes separate exploration in its preparation guidance for a new kitten.

3. Allow brief visual contact through a barrier

Use a secure transparent or mesh barrier, or a baby gate, so the pets can see one another without touching. Keep the first sessions brief. Make sure each animal can move away; a cat should have an escape route and, where possible, a high place out of reach of a dog. If either pet becomes distressed or highly aroused, end the session and return to an earlier stage.

4. Try short, controlled meetings

When both animals are relaxed during barrier sessions, try a short meeting with direct contact. For a dog-cat introduction, keep the dog on a lead at first and let the cat choose whether to approach. Do not hold or corner the cat. Reward calm behavior where appropriate, and gradually increase the time together only while both remain comfortable. Cats Protection outlines this gradual approach in its guidance on introducing cats to dogs and other pets.

5. Supervise until it is safe to trust them

Stay present during meetings and keep the option to separate the animals. Do not leave a cat and dog together unattended until they are reliably safe and comfortable around one another. If you cannot supervise, keep them in separate areas.

Adapt the approach to the animals

Cat and dog

Prioritize a dog-free refuge for the cat, an escape route, and controlled contact. The dog should remain manageable during early meetings; the cat should never be forced to approach. Use barriers and lead control to prevent a chase or sudden contact while the pets are learning about each other.

Cat and cat

Give each cat its own safe area and separate access to food, resting places, litter trays, scratching posts and hiding spots. Use scent exchange before protected visual contact, then increase proximity gradually. The ASPCA recommends separating cats that show aggression and reintroducing them more slowly; its guidance on aggression between household cats describes this process.

Dog and dog

Keep introductions controlled, use reward-based training, and maintain routines that include exercise, play and rest. Manage access to valued resources and give each dog a place to settle. Dog-dog introductions have their own resource and routine considerations; they are not simply the same process as introducing two cats or a cat and dog. See VCA’s dog-to-dog introduction guidance.

What to do if there is conflict

Do not let pets “fight it out.” Separate them safely, give them time to settle, and restart at an earlier, slower stage. For cats, growling, spitting, hissing or swatting are reasons to stop the interaction and increase distance. Revisit the setup too: competition for food, resting spots or other valued items can contribute to conflict.

If aggression persists, there is an injury, or an animal seems severely fearful, consult a veterinarian and seek help from a suitably qualified behavior professional. In some cases, ongoing separation is the safest arrangement; if the animals cannot live together comfortably, rehoming may be more humane than continued stressful coexistence.

How to tell whether to move forward

  • Safety: Can you prevent physical contact if a session goes badly?
  • Retreat: Can each animal move away or reach a safe resting place?
  • Calmness: Are both animals able to remain relaxed, rather than showing escalating distress or arousal?
  • Resources: Are food, resting places and other valued items separated enough to limit competition?
  • Supervision: Can someone reliably monitor meetings and separate the pets when needed?

If the answer to any of these is no, improve the setup or slow the introduction rather than increasing contact.
