How do I treat harvest mites on my dog?
If you see tiny orange clusters or your dog develops sudden, intense itching, contact a veterinarian. Harvest mites can resemble other causes of irritation, including fleas, so appearance alone is not a reliable diagnosis. A veterinarian may spot the orange larvae or examine a superficial skin scraping under a microscope.
Harvest mite larvae are about 1/100th of an inch (0.4 mm) long, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. They attach to the skin’s surface, often around the ears and between the toes, where the coat is thinner. They can also occur elsewhere on the body.
Follow veterinary treatment instructions
VCA says flea-control insecticides can kill harvest mites when correctly applied, but no products are licensed specifically to treat harvest mites in dogs and cats. That is not a reason to choose or dose an over-the-counter pesticide yourself: ask your veterinarian which treatment, if any, is appropriate for your dog and location, and follow the product’s applicable label.

Many dogs need no additional treatment once the mites are killed. If your dog is particularly sensitive, a veterinarian may recommend anti-inflammatory medication. Antibiotics may be needed if a secondary skin infection develops.
What can I do to stop the itching?
Harvest mite larvae and the enzymes they use to feed irritate the skin. Scratching and chewing can lead to crusts, hair loss, raw areas, or bleeding. Ask your veterinarian about persistent itching, worsening lesions, or signs that the skin may be infected; treatment depends on what is causing the symptoms and how badly the skin is affected.

Do not put rubbing alcohol on your dog. VCA veterinarians Courtney Barnes and Malcolm Weir note that it will not kill chiggers or help with symptoms; it can instead cause burning, pain, and discomfort.
When should I seek veterinary care?
Arrange a veterinary assessment if you suspect harvest mites, particularly if your dog has raw or bleeding skin, marked discomfort, or worsening lesions. The same signs can have other causes, and a veterinarian can confirm whether mites are present and decide whether skin damage or infection needs treatment.

How can I reduce the chance of another exposure?
Harvest mites live in outdoor environments such as tall grass, weeds, berry patches, woodland, leaves, and mulch. During the season, avoid known infested areas and places with high grass or weeds; VCA also advises confining dogs during harvest mite season. Dogs do not spread harvest mites directly to one another, and people are exposed from the environment rather than catching them from dogs or cats.
