Help wild birds through winter by preserving natural food and cover, offering clean, dry food as a supplement, and keeping fresh water available. A few steady habits—suited to the birds and climate where you live—are more useful than trying to feed every bird or relying on one universal seed mix.

Start with natural food and habitat

Feeders can help when snow or ice makes food harder to find, but they work best as a supplement to a bird-friendly yard. Native trees, shrubs, and other plants can provide seeds, fruit, buds, and shelter. Leave suitable fruit on branches and consider keeping some seed-bearing flower heads standing through winter.

Choose plants suited to your region and site. Plants native to a local area are more likely to thrive there and provide foods familiar to native birds; there is no single winter plant list that fits every climate. Cornell Lab’s guidance on creating bird habitat covers food, water, and shelter, including options for small urban spaces and balconies: Cornell Lab: How to Make Your Yard Bird-Friendly.

Offer food that fits local birds

Black-oil sunflower seed is a useful option for many seed-eating birds, according to the National Wildlife Federation (NWF). Match the food to both the feeder and the birds common in your area; not all species eat the same foods or visit feeders. Suet can attract woodpeckers and other birds that eat insects, but NWF cautions against leaving it out in warm weather, when it can go rancid. See NWF’s bird-feeding guidance.

Keep seed dry, remove spoiled or moldy food, and let a feeder dry after cleaning before refilling it. Audubon Great Lakes recommends cleaning feeders every one to two weeks as practical guidance—not a guarantee of disease prevention. Clean sooner if food gets wet, the feeder is visibly dirty, or local wildlife authorities advise extra precautions. Audubon Great Lakes explains feeder hygiene and other winter measures in How to Help Birds in Winter.

Site feeders to reduce the chance that cats or other predators can hide nearby. NWF suggests placing them 10 to 12 feet from low shrubs or brush piles. Treat that as placement guidance: the aim is to limit ambush cover while accounting for the layout of your yard.

Make fresh water available

Birds need water in winter, too. When temperatures allow, refresh a shallow bath and keep it clean, with a stable place for birds to perch. If water regularly freezes, a heated bird bath or bird-bath heater can help maintain access; the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also names a heated rock as an option. Its winter wildlife advice is available at Helping Wildlife While Avoiding Common Pitfalls.

Never add salt to birdbath water to keep it from freezing. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warns: “For the safety of birds and other animals, salt should never be added to birdbaths to avoid freezing.”

Provide places to shelter

Trees, dense shrubs, thickets, and brush piles give birds cover from weather and places to rest. A mix of trees, shrubs, and ground cover creates more kinds of shelter than a bare lawn. Brush piles can offer useful cover where space and local conditions permit; Audubon Great Lakes also identifies nest boxes as one shelter option during winter storms.

Habitat choices can support birds beyond a single cold spell: locally suitable plants may provide food and cover across seasons, while feeders and heated water are optional aids that require ongoing upkeep.

Choose a manageable winter routine

  • Keep suitable natural food and cover in the yard where possible, including winter-persistent fruit and some seed heads.
  • If you use a feeder, offer food suited to nearby birds, keep it dry, and clean it regularly.
  • Check water often during freezing weather; use a suitable heater if needed, and never use salt.
  • Look for local native-plant recommendations and follow local wildlife authorities’ current advice on bird disease or feeding restrictions.

These recommendations are drawn primarily from U.S. organizations, and species, weather, and appropriate plants vary by location. Backyard feeding can offer an additional resource, but it does not guarantee a bird’s survival; natural food, water, and shelter remain important parts of habitat.
