If your cat rarely drinks from a bowl, that does not automatically mean dehydration. Cats also obtain water from food, and wet food is typically 70–80% water. A cat eating wet food, urinating normally and behaving well may be meeting its needs without dramatic bowl visits. The goal is to make clean water and moisture-rich food easy to accept, then involve a veterinarian when drinking changes or illness signs appear.
Try the eight low-risk adjustments below one at a time. Your cat may respond to a different bowl, location, temperature or water source than another cat. Keep a plain-water option available while you test flavored water, fountains or diet changes. Compare each option by acceptance, stability, ease of cleaning and safe placement—not by appearance or a promise that it will work for every cat.

How much water does a cat need?
Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine gives an approximate total-water guide of four ounces per five pounds of lean body weight per day. That figure includes water in food, not just what disappears from the bowl, and individual needs vary with body size, temperature, activity, diet and health. VCA notes the same baseline and emphasizes that a veterinarian should determine an individual cat’s hydration needs. See Cornell’s hydration guidance and VCA’s hydration tips.

Wet cat food commonly contains 70–80% water, according to International Cat Care, and Cornell says some wet foods contain up to 80%. Therefore, compare your cat’s complete daily intake and condition rather than trying to force a particular bowl volume. A cat that eats mostly wet food may naturally drink less from a bowl than a cat eating dry food.

The four-ounce figure is a general starting point, not an individualized prescription. A kitten, senior cat, active cat, or cat living in a hot environment may have different needs. Health conditions and medicines can also alter thirst and fluid requirements. If you are worried about a specific amount, ask your veterinary team how to assess your cat rather than relying on a household measuring cup.
Pick an experiment that fits your cat
| Option | Potential benefit | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Complete wet food or added meal water | Raises moisture intake through food | Change gradually and preserve adequate calories and prescribed-diet requirements |
| Additional wide, shallow bowls | Provides choice and reduces competition or inconvenient travel | Place in quiet, secure locations and clean regularly |
| Water fountain | Offers moving water for cats attracted to flow | Introduce slowly; motor noise, filters and cleaning affect acceptance |
| Plain, lightly flavored water | May interest a cat that ignores plain water | Use only safe, unsalted liquids and keep plain water available |
| Raised or mobility-friendly source | Can reduce bending for some arthritic or weak cats | Height and stability must suit the individual cat |
There is no universally best bowl, fountain or water type. A useful trial changes one variable at a time and leaves the cat an easy fallback. For a bowl, consider material, width, depth, noise, stability and cleaning. For a fountain, consider whether the motor is quiet, whether every part can be scrubbed, and how often filters need attention. For a diet change, consider complete nutrition, moisture, calorie intake, transition tolerance and compatibility with veterinary instructions.
Eight ways to encourage more drinking
1. Offer wet food or add a little water to meals
Replacing some dry food with a nutritionally complete wet formula is one of the most direct ways to increase moisture intake. International Cat Care reports 70–80% water in wet cat food, while Cornell reports that some products contain up to 80%. The water is consumed as part of the meal, so a cat does not need to compensate with frequent bowl drinking.
Make a diet transition gradually rather than removing a familiar food abruptly. Start with a small amount of the new food or mix in a little warm, not hot, water, and increase only if your cat continues eating willingly. Monitor total calories and stool quality. Ask the veterinary team first if your cat has kidney disease, diabetes, urinary disease, food allergies or another condition requiring a prescribed diet; the most hydrating choice still has to be nutritionally and medically appropriate.
Do not let a moisture experiment turn into missed meals. If your cat refuses the altered texture, return to the last version it ate reliably and discuss alternatives with the veterinary team. Added water should supplement an appropriate meal, not dilute it until the cat leaves food behind. Keep portions and feeding frequency consistent enough that you can tell whether appetite has changed.
2. Put water in several quiet, accessible places
Provide at least one water bowl per cat plus one extra, with at least one source on every floor of a multi-level home. International Cat Care recommends quiet positions away from litter trays, doors, noisy appliances and busy walkways. A cat should be able to approach, drink and leave without being cornered.
In homes with several cats or dogs, separate stations can prevent another animal from blocking access. A bowl may be in the same room as food, but many cats prefer it not to sit directly beside the food dish. Keep every source reachable without a difficult jump or a long trip.

Check access from the cat’s point of view. A bowl behind a door, next to a loud appliance or in a narrow passage may be technically available but practically uncomfortable. Multiple stations also let you test whether location matters while preserving access if one area becomes busy. Do not remove the cat’s familiar station until another location is clearly accepted.
3. Keep bowls and water genuinely fresh
Refresh drinking water daily, and sooner if it contains hair, food, dust or litter. VCA advises washing and rinsing bowls daily; regular cleaning removes residue and odors that can make water unappealing. Use a stable bowl that cannot tip easily.
Fountains are not maintenance-free. Disassemble and clean them on the manufacturer’s schedule, top them up as needed and replace filters as directed. If a fountain becomes slimy, noisy or clogged, return to a freshly cleaned plain bowl while you service it.
Cleaning is part of the comparison, not an optional extra. A vessel that looks attractive but is difficult to reach inside may be neglected, while a simple bowl that can be washed thoroughly every day may be more useful. Rinse away cleaning residue before refilling. If a cat suddenly stops using a previously accepted source, inspect freshness, odor, debris and stability before assuming the cat has become “picky.”

Some cats prefer cold water; others accept room-temperature water. Offer small amounts in separate clean bowls so you can observe a preference without depriving your cat of a familiar option.
Depending on local water quality and your cat’s response, reasonable choices include ordinary potable tap water, filtered water or still spring water. International Cat Care recommends testing safe options rather than assuming a special water is medically necessary. Keep the water fresh and avoid making a sudden switch if your cat is already drinking reliably.
Use water that is safe for people to drink in your area, and avoid treating bottled or filtered water as a cure. The useful question is whether your individual cat drinks it willingly and whether you can keep it fresh. If a change in water type coincides with reduced intake, restore the previously accepted option while you seek advice.

5. Try a wide, shallow, brim-filled bowl
A wide, shallow vessel lets many cats drink without their whiskers touching the sides. Fill it near the brim so the surface is easy to locate. Glass or ceramic suits many cats; individual preferences differ. Some cats avoid metal because it can feel cold, reflect light or make noise when moved.

If it paws at the edge, spills water or stops before lowering its head, change one feature at a time: width, material, depth or stability. A raised bowl can help a cat with arthritis or reduced mobility, but excessive height or wobbling can make access harder. Choose a secure elevation that allows a comfortable posture.
Place the bowl on a surface that stays level and does not slide when touched. Brim-filling makes the water surface easier to find, but refill it whenever debris enters. A wide shape is not automatically better if it occupies a narrow route or is easy to knock over. Observe the whole drinking posture—neck, shoulders, paws and exit route—rather than judging the bowl in isolation.
6. Offer moving water, introducing a fountain slowly
Running water attracts some cats, but a fountain is optional and is not a guaranteed solution. Noise, vibration, reflections and the location of the stream all affect acceptance. Select a stable model that can be cleaned thoroughly and keep a regular bowl available during the trial.
- Set the empty, switched-off fountain in the chosen location and let your cat inspect it.
- Add water once the cat is comfortable near the device.
- Turn on the motor only after the cat accepts the filled fountain.
- Keep it topped up and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and filter instructions.
If your cat retreats, start again with the motor off or move the fountain to a quieter place. Never remove all other water sources to force acceptance.

A fountain that is quiet on the first day may become noisy as the water level falls or a filter clogs. Keep the unit stable, maintain the water level recommended by its maker and inspect it regularly. The best fountain is the one your cat uses and you can clean consistently; an elaborate unit that is ignored does not improve hydration.
7. Use a safe, lightly flavored option
A small amount of low-sodium chicken broth may encourage drinking. Other options suggested by Cornell, VCA and International Cat Care include plain chicken or fish poaching liquid without stock or added salt, or liquid from fish packed in spring water. Offer the flavored liquid in a separate vessel and change it daily.

Always leave plain water available. Do not use seasoned broth, salty stock, alcohol, caffeinated drinks, dairy beverages or any human liquid that could be toxic or upsetting. Treat flavored water as an occasional enticement, not a replacement for a balanced diet or veterinary care.
Flavor can be useful for a short trial, but it should not hide a persistent decline in drinking or become the only accepted fluid. If the cat ignores the mixture, discard it rather than repeatedly intensifying the flavor. Keep preparation simple so you know exactly what the cat is consuming, and stop if vomiting, diarrhea or refusal of normal food occurs.
8. Make every drinking station feel safe
Place bowls where your cat has visibility around the station and can leave in more than one direction. Avoid narrow corners where a dog, another cat or a person could block the approach. In a multi-pet home, provide separate access points rather than expecting one shared bowl to work for everyone.
For cats with weakness, arthritis or poor balance, position a stable source on the same level as their resting area. A safely raised bowl may reduce bending, but do not create a tipping hazard or require stairs and jumps. Observe the cat drinking and adjust the setup to the posture and route that look easiest.
Security includes predictable access. Do not put the only source beside a door that is frequently closed or in a place where another pet waits. If your cat drinks only when the room is quiet, respect that preference and add a second station rather than repeatedly moving the original. Small environmental changes can matter more than buying a specialized product.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to tell whether the change is helping
Track practical observations for several days: whether your cat eats its full meals, how often water is refreshed, urine output compared with normal, energy, appetite and any vomiting or diarrhea. A bowl-level estimate alone cannot measure total hydration when wet food supplies much of the water. Avoid abruptly restricting or flooding access while you test different setups.
Record which location, vessel, temperature or food texture was offered and whether the cat approached voluntarily. This simple comparison helps you return to the last arrangement that worked if a new experiment fails. It also gives your veterinarian useful context if the change persists. Do not force a cat to drink, withhold food or water to make a test “clean,” or assume a single quiet day proves a medical problem or rules one out.

When reduced drinking needs veterinary attention
Contact a veterinarian promptly if you suspect dehydration, if drinking remains meaningfully lower than usual, or if a change persists. Cornell lists lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dry mucous membranes and, in severe cases, sunken eyes as warning signs. Vomiting, diarrhea, kidney disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, certain medicines, dental pain, weakness and lack of access can all contribute to dehydration or reduced drinking.
A new, sustained increase in drinking also warrants veterinary advice because excessive thirst can signal illness. Do not attempt to diagnose the cause from bowl behavior alone. Cats may compensate for a dry diet by drinking more, while illness can alter thirst, urination, appetite and energy together. A meaningful change from your cat’s normal pattern deserves professional assessment even when the cat still appears interested in water.
Do not syringe-force food or water. International Cat Care warns that this is stressful and that liquid entering the lungs can cause serious illness. As VCA Animal Hospitals states in its hydration guidance accessed October 13, 2026, “Your veterinarian is your best source for determining your cat’s hydration needs.” Read the International Cat Care caregiver guide and seek professional help when signs or changes concern you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether my cat is drinking enough?
Count water from food as well as bowls. Wet food contains about 70–80% water, so bowl visits alone are not a reliable hydration measurement. Watch appetite, energy, urination and overall behavior, and ask a veterinarian if intake changes or dehydration signs appear.
Should I give my cat bottled or filtered water?
Not necessarily. Safe potable tap water, filtered water or still spring water may all be reasonable. Offer clean options and follow your cat’s preference; no special water is automatically medically required.
Are cat fountains better than bowls?
Some cats enjoy moving water, but fountains are optional and not guaranteed to increase drinking. Compare acceptance, noise, stability, cleaning access and filter maintenance, and keep a plain bowl available.
Can I add broth to my cat’s water?
A small amount of low-sodium chicken broth, unsalted chicken or fish poaching liquid, or liquid from fish packed in spring water may encourage drinking. Avoid seasoned or salty products, change flavored water daily and always provide plain water too.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs it safe to syringe water into a cat’s mouth?
Do not syringe-force water unless specifically directed and demonstrated by your veterinary team. International Cat Care warns that the process is stressful and liquid can enter the lungs and cause serious illness.
When should reduced drinking be treated as urgent?
Contact a veterinarian promptly for suspected dehydration, persistent or meaningful changes in drinking, or signs such as lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dry gums, sunken eyes, vomiting or diarrhea. A new sustained increase in thirst also needs veterinary advice.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least disruptive changes: moisture-rich complete food if appropriate, several clean bowls in quiet locations, and a vessel your cat can approach comfortably. Test temperature, material, moving water and safe flavoring one at a time, while keeping plain water available. Because bowl drinking is only part of total intake, judge the whole cat—not one bowl—and involve your veterinarian for persistent changes, illness signs or any concern about hydration.
