Help your dog get used to car travel by starting with brief, calm sessions in a parked car, then adding movement in small steps. Keep your dog secured in a suitable crate or car harness, reward relaxed behavior, and slow down if you see signs of fear or nausea. Repeated vomiting, drooling, or distress warrants a conversation with your veterinarian.
Choose a safe restraint before you practice
Dogs should travel secured, not loose in the cabin. A properly secured crate or a car safety harness are options; the right choice depends on your dog’s size and comfort, your vehicle’s layout and securement points, and what you can introduce gradually. VCA’s guidance is that a dog should be appropriately restrained during travel: VCA, “Road Trips and Car Travel With Your Dog”.

Before using a new harness or crate in a moving car, let your dog get comfortable with it separately. Follow the restraint maker’s instructions for fitting and securing it. The sources consulted do not establish comparative crash-test results, so they do not support ranking harnesses against crates for crash protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Do not let your dog ride on your lap or in an airbag-equipped front passenger seat.
- Do not allow your dog to put its head outside an open window.
- Never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle, even in shade or with the windows cracked; temperatures can become dangerous quickly. See the AVMA’s vehicle-safety guidance.
Build comfort in small steps
Keep each session short enough that your dog can remain comfortable. Advance when the current step is easy; there is no fixed schedule that suits every dog. VCA describes behavior modification as a way to reduce anxiety associated with car travel, but progress depends on the individual dog: VCA, “Dog Behavior and Training: Air and Car Travel”.

- 𝐍𝐨 𝐒𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥: The dog seat cover without terrible smell is friendly for pets and children. In an enclosed car space, no terrible smell is also important to keep you focused and driving safely, something that others’ dog covers on the market ignore
- Practice the restraint at home. Let your dog investigate the crate or harness and reward calm interaction. Keep practice brief and positive.
- Spend calm time in the parked car. With the car stationary and your dog secured, let them explore or settle. Pair calm behavior with a treat or a food-filled toy if your dog is comfortable eating.
- Add the car’s sounds and setup. Once settling in the parked car is comfortable, introduce ordinary car sounds or other small changes one at a time. If your dog becomes worried, return to the easier version.
- Try a very short drive. Choose a quiet route and, when practical, a pleasant destination. Keep the dog secured and observe their response.
- Increase duration gradually. Extend trips only while your dog remains comfortable. VCA gives 20–30 minutes as an example milestone in gradual conditioning, not a deadline or target every dog must reach.
Familiar bedding or a pheromone product may be useful as an optional comfort aid, but neither replaces gradual practice, secure restraint, or veterinary care when symptoms are significant.
Recognize distress and step back
Watch your dog’s behavior rather than following a calendar. Possible signs of distress or motion sickness include restlessness, pacing, whining, panting, drooling, lip licking or smacking, lethargy, vomiting, and defecation. A single sign does not tell you whether the cause is fear, nausea, or something else.

If your dog shows distress during practice, end the session or pause at a safe place. On another day, restart at an easier step, such as calm time in the parked car. Do not force your dog to continue in the hope they will “get over it.” The AVMA travel brochure also recommends short practice rides as part of preparing a pet for travel.

When to contact a veterinarian
Motion sickness and travel anxiety can overlap, and symptoms alone may not identify the cause. Ask your veterinarian about repeated drooling or vomiting, ongoing distress, or whether treatment might be appropriate. Check with the veterinarian before giving any medication; do not give human medicines unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to.

Make longer trips more manageable
- Keep the car cool and as quiet as practical.
- Offer water when it is practical and safe, and plan safe stops on longer journeys.
- Food timing can affect individual dogs differently. Ask your veterinarian what is suitable for your dog rather than applying a rigid feeding rule.
- Keep using the same gradual approach: if a longer ride brings back distress, shorten the next practice session.
