How to Help Your Dog or Cat Adjust When Kids Go Back to School

A gradual routine change, a dependable resting area, suitable activity, and careful observation can make the return to school easier for dogs and cats.

When children return to school, a pet can lose hours of company, familiar play, and daytime noise almost overnight. The kindest adjustment is gradual: move meals, walks, departures, and quiet periods toward the school schedule before the first day, then watch what your individual dog or cat does when alone.

Some animals settle quickly; others show stress through vocalizing, destructive behavior, appetite or bathroom changes, altered grooming, or frantic greetings. Those signs warrant observation rather than a quick diagnosis. A veterinarian can help rule out illness and other behavior problems when a change is persistent or worrying.

Why going back to school can unsettle a pet

School breaks often create an unusually social household. People wake later, feed at different times, take extra walks, and spend more hours at home. When that pattern ends, the pet experiences several changes together: fewer people around, different sounds and activity, new meal and toilet intervals, and longer stretches without interaction. Animals that have become accustomed to constant company may find the contrast particularly difficult.

Routine changes can matter even when nobody has done anything wrong. Dr. Loukia Agapis of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine notes that “Any disruption in routine may trigger anxiety in your pet,” including a change in an owner’s schedule. Her guidance is about possible anxiety, not a diagnosis for every pet that behaves differently. Read the University of Illinois veterinary Q&A.

The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2024 back-to-school guidance recommends preparing in advance. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) gives similar transition advice in a return-to-work handout; its routine suggestions can be applied to a school-year change even though the handout was written for a different context.

Start several weeks before the first school day

If your calendar allows, begin a few weeks ahead. You do not need to change every part of the day at once. Move one activity by a small amount, let the pet experience the new pattern, and then adjust again. The objective is a predictable school-day rhythm, not a perfectly timed household.

  1. Set the target routine. Note the expected wake-up, breakfast, walks or outdoor breaks, school departure, afternoon return, dinner, play, and bedtime. Include the longest period the pet will be alone.
  2. Shift meals gradually. Feed closer to the school-year times rather than making a large single-day jump. Keep portions and dietary changes appropriate for the animal; this exercise is about timing, not changing food.
  3. Re-time walks and toilet opportunities. Move dog walks and outdoor breaks toward the hours someone will actually be available. For cats, schedule interactive play and litter-box attention at times the family can maintain.
  4. Rehearse the morning sequence. Practice getting dressed, packing bags, picking up keys, and leaving in the order that will occur on school days. The AVMA recommends rehearsing expected waking, feeding, walking, and departure routines.
  5. Practice short absences. Leave for a brief, manageable interval, return calmly, and build duration only while the pet remains comfortable. If a trial produces intense distress, shorten the next absence instead of forcing a longer one.
  6. Practice quiet periods while people are home. Encourage the pet to rest in its designated area while the household reads, works, or moves through another room. This separates “people are present” from “constant attention.”

The AVMA describes the aim well: “A gentle transition will help make this change in routine as stress-free as possible.”

Build a school-day setup that meets the pet’s needs

Give the pet a reliable resting place

Choose a quiet, comfortable area the animal can use voluntarily. Put a bed, crate (if the pet already regards it positively), or mat there, along with familiar toys or suitable chew items. Keep the location away from high-traffic departures if bustle makes the pet agitated, but do not use it as punishment or force the animal to stay there.

For cats, a safe room or elevated resting option can provide distance from household commotion. Make sure food, water, litter access, and the ability to retreat are appropriate for the individual cat. Dogs may benefit from a calm room, pen, or open crate that they already associate with relaxation.

Add mental enrichment without overselling it

Short training sessions, sniffing games, interactive toys, food puzzles, and treat-dispensing toys give a pet something constructive to do. Introduce any new item while you are home so you can confirm that the pet uses it safely. These are optional enrichment tools, not guaranteed treatments for separation anxiety; a distressed animal may ignore food when alone.

Background sound can be another household choice. The AVMA mentions television, radio, or a sound machine, while the University of Illinois Q&A mentions pet-oriented streaming. Evidence here does not establish that a particular audio or video service prevents anxiety, so treat sound as a comfort experiment and discontinue it if it seems to agitate the pet.

Provide species-appropriate activity

Exercise should fit the pet’s age, health, breed, and temperament. AAHA suggests a morning walk for dogs so they have an opportunity to move and toilet before the family leaves. A second walk or play session after school can restore social contact without making the morning frantic.

Cats may benefit from indoor activity such as climbing structures, tunnels, chasing games, or brief play sessions. Keep sessions short enough that the cat remains interested, and secure climbing or toy equipment so it cannot become a hazard during unsupervised time.

Use a simple schedule to rehearse the change

An example can make the transition concrete. Replace the times below with your household’s actual commitments; the point is the order and gradual practice.

Routine element Break pattern School-year practice
Wake-up Late or variable Move earlier in small increments until it matches the school morning
Breakfast After everyone is up Feed at the planned school-day time, then keep the sequence consistent
Dog walk or outdoor break Flexible or extended Practice the morning walk before departure and the next reliable opportunity
Departure cues Rare or unpredictable Rehearse bags, shoes, keys, and short exits without dramatic goodbyes
Daytime activity Frequent interaction Offer a rest period, safe enrichment, or planned visitor during the longest absence
Return home Someone usually present Keep the reunion calm enough to avoid turning every arrival into a highly arousing event

Keep a written note of the pet’s response to each change. That record helps you identify whether a problem follows a longer absence, a missed walk, a particular departure cue, or something unrelated to the schedule.

Recognize possible stress without diagnosing it

Behavior during or around an absence can indicate that you need to investigate further. The University of Illinois lists the following possible signs. A sign by itself does not prove separation anxiety, and a pet can have a medical problem or another behavioral explanation.

Dogs may show Cats may show
Following an owner closely Urination or defecation outside the litter box
Anxiety before departure Persistent meowing
Vocalizing Eating too fast or not eating
Destructive behavior Vomiting
Inappropriate elimination Excessive grooming
Pacing Destructive behavior
Frantic attempts to escape Exuberant greetings
Salivation or vomiting
Loss of appetite without an identified medical reason
Exuberant greetings

Some signs are easy to miss because they occur only after the family leaves. If you are concerned, the AVMA suggests filming the pet when alone. A camera can show when the behavior begins, whether it is tied to a departure cue, and whether the animal rests, eats, paces, vocalizes, or attempts escape. Share useful observations with your veterinarian rather than relying on a single dramatic incident.

Choose daytime help for the individual animal

When the school schedule creates a long absence, additional company or an exercise break may help. There is no universal ranking of services. Consider the pet’s comfort with unfamiliar people or groups, the length and timing of the absence, toileting and exercise needs, the household budget and logistics, and the provider’s ability to follow instructions.

Option May fit when Questions to check first
Pet sitter The animal is more comfortable at home and needs feeding, medication, company, or a calm break Will the same person visit? Can they follow food, medication, access, and emergency instructions?
Dog walker A dog needs a midday toilet opportunity, walk, or brief human contact Does the dog welcome a new handler? Is the walk length and handling style appropriate?
Dog daycare A social dog genuinely enjoys group activity and the absence is long How are temperament, play groups, rest periods, supervision, vaccination, and trial visits handled?

Introduce a provider before the first full school day. Observe the pet’s body language and recovery afterward; a service that exhausts or frightens an animal is not a good solution simply because it fills time. Cats may prefer an in-home visit rather than relocation or group care.

What to do if the first school week goes badly

If destruction or accidents appear

Do not punish the pet after you return. The AVMA states, “If signs of anxiety occur—such as destructive activity—don’t punish your pet.” Punishment after the event cannot teach the animal which earlier behavior you disliked and may make departures or reunions more frightening. Secure hazards, clean soiled areas appropriately, and reduce the next absence to a duration the pet can manage while you arrange professional advice.

If the pet ignores food or enrichment

Do not assume that a puzzle toy has failed as a product or that you need a more exciting reward. High arousal can suppress appetite and play. Offer familiar, safe enrichment when you are home, and focus on shorter, calmer practice absences. Remove items that are chewed apart or could be swallowed.

If greetings become frantic

Keep arrivals and departures predictable and low-key. Wait for a moment of calmer behavior before beginning an exciting interaction, while still meeting the pet’s need for affection and exercise. Record whether the intensity fades quickly or remains accompanied by pacing, vocalizing, elimination, or escape attempts.

If the routine cannot be maintained

Rework the plan around the actual school timetable rather than an idealized one. A shorter morning walk, a scheduled sitter visit, or a different quiet area may be more realistic than repeatedly missing a promised activity. Consistency that the household can sustain is more useful than a complicated plan followed for two days.

When to call the veterinarian

Contact a veterinarian when a behavior change is concerning, severe, or persistent, or when you see vomiting, appetite loss, elimination changes, excessive grooming, salivation, injury risk, or frantic escape attempts. Medical conditions and other behavior problems can resemble separation anxiety, so the first step is to rule out physical causes and assess the full pattern. The University of Illinois and AAHA both recommend veterinary involvement rather than assuming every back-to-school behavior is anxiety.

Bring your schedule notes and any safely recorded video. Tell the veterinarian when the behavior began, how long the pet is alone, what happens before departure, what the animal does during the absence, and how quickly it recovers after people return. That context supports a more accurate plan than labeling the behavior from one episode.

A practical first-day checklist

  • Feed and exercise at the rehearsed times.
  • Confirm water, litter access, toilet arrangements, and a hazard-free resting area.
  • Leave familiar bedding and safe toys; use a food puzzle or treat-dispensing toy only if the pet already handles it safely.
  • Keep departure cues and goodbyes calm and brief.
  • Arrange a sitter or dog walker when the absence exceeds what the individual pet can comfortably manage.
  • Use a camera or other safe observation method if you need to know what happens after departure.
  • Never punish damage, vocalizing, or accidents discovered on your return.
  • Call your veterinarian for persistent or medically concerning changes.
