Make closing your laptop the start of a calm, familiar evening routine—not a sudden demand that your dog switch off. Meet your dog’s usual needs for activity, attention and a chance to go outside, then guide them to relax on a nearby bed or mat. Reward genuine calm and build the routine gradually.
Why a predictable end-of-work routine helps
Your laptop closing can be a convenient cue that work is over, but the sources here do not establish it as a cause or trigger of canine anxiety. What matters is what follows: a consistent pattern helps your dog anticipate the transition. Veterinary behaviorist Katherine Houpt, quoted by Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, puts it simply: “What seems to work best is predictability.”
Keep the day’s general rhythm of meals, walks, play, training and rest reasonably steady. There is no universal post-work schedule that suits every dog. Choose a sequence that fits your dog’s age, health, toilet needs and normal activity level.
Build a familiar transition after work
- Close the laptop and keep your manner calm. Let this mark a change in routine without turning it into an exciting event.
- Offer what your dog needs next. Depending on the dog and the day, that may mean a walk, sniffing, play, a short training session, interaction or an opportunity to eliminate.
- Move into a quiet rest activity. Invite your dog to a comfortable bed or mat nearby and reward relaxed behavior. A food toy can be optional enrichment if your dog uses it calmly and safely.
- Repeat a workable sequence. Familiarity matters more than following a rigid timetable or making every evening identical.
Meeting activity and behavioral needs before asking for rest can make the transition more reasonable. VCA’s guidance on separation anxiety in dogs and the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s advice on preparing a dog for a return to work outside the home support enrichment and routine, rather than a single prescribed after-work formula.

Teach your dog to settle on a bed or mat
Practice when you are present and the household is quiet. Start with the mat or bed close to where you are sitting. The surface is a useful training aid, not a treatment by itself; there is no established superior brand.
- Make the resting spot comfortable. Use a stable, appropriately sized bed or mat that is easy to clean and does not slide around.
- Notice relaxation and reward it quietly. Look for loose, soft body language rather than a rigid “stay.” VCA describes signs such as shifting onto a hip or resting the chin. Deliver a small reward calmly, without revving your dog up.
- Gradually leave more time between rewards. If your dog stays comfortable, slowly extend the interval. If they get up or become tense, make the exercise easier rather than insisting.
- Add a cue at the right moment. Say a word such as “settle” when your dog is already relaxing. Repeating the cue while your dog is excited or unsettled is unlikely to make the moment calmer.
- Increase distance in small steps. Once your dog can relax near you, move the mat a little farther away. Only add brief out-of-sight practice when the closer version is going well.

Make departures a separate, gradual skill
Relaxing while you are in the room does not necessarily mean your dog is ready to be alone. If you want to practice leaving, begin with very brief separations and return before your dog shows distress. Increase the time only while your dog remains comfortable. If signs of distress appear, reduce the difficulty or stop the exercise.
Video can help you see what happens when you are out of sight or briefly away. A pet camera is an observation tool, not treatment. VCA’s guidance on preventing separation distress recommends gradual practice and monitoring behavior.

Food-stuffable toys and puzzle feeders may provide enrichment for dogs that can use them comfortably and safely. They are optional, and they do not replace gradual training or veterinary help when a dog is distressed. AVSAB discusses self-play and nose-work activities in its return-to-work guidance; VCA also describes feeding toys as one way to add mental effort in its separation-anxiety guidance.

A dog who takes time to wind down after an active day is not automatically experiencing separation anxiety. Concern rises when distress is linked to your absence or separation. Possible signs include pacing, barking or other vocalizing, salivating, destructive behavior, house soiling, refusal to eat or withdrawal. These signs need context and may have other explanations, so they are not a diagnosis on their own.

- Do not punish damage or accidents; punishment does not address the reason for the behavior and can add stress.
- Do not force confinement or extend time alone through visible distress.
- Arrange a veterinary discussion if distress signs occur during absences, recur, worsen or are otherwise concerning.
A veterinarian can assess possible causes and discuss whether referral to a veterinary behaviorist is appropriate. For serious or worsening problems, an individualized plan should come from your dog’s veterinary team. Cornell advises consulting a veterinarian rather than choosing an over-the-counter remedy online in its guidance on anxious behavior.
