Follow the discharge plan from your pet’s veterinary team first: recovery needs depend on the operation, incision, anesthesia, and medicines. At home, the priorities are to limit activity, keep the incision dry and protected, give only prescribed medicines, and call the clinic if your pet’s condition worsens or the incision changes.

Set up a quiet, safe place to rest

Choose a warm, quiet indoor spot where you can supervise your pet. A suitable crate or small room can help limit movement, but use a space that is safe and comfortable for that animal. Keep your pet away from running, jumping, rough play, and unnecessary stairs while activity is restricted. Pets may seem eager to move before the incision is ready for strain.

For dogs

Take your dog outside on a short leash for toileting, then return indoors. If the veterinarian permits walks, keep them brief and slow. Do not allow off-leash running or play with other pets during the restriction period.

For cats

Keep a cat with a fresh incision indoors. Block access to counters, shelves, and other high places that encourage jumping, and separate the cat from play or roughhousing if needed.

Protect the incision and check it regularly

Look at the incision in good light on a regular basis. It should remain closed, and you should compare its appearance with earlier checks. Mild redness, swelling, or bruising can occur early in healing, but the overall trend should be toward improvement.

  • Keep the incision dry. Do not bathe or let your pet swim until the veterinary team says it is safe.
  • Do not apply hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, ointment, or other products unless the veterinarian specifically directs you to.
  • Prevent licking or chewing for the full period advised by the clinic. A cone or Elizabethan collar is a common barrier. A recovery suit may work for some incision locations, but it must not rub the site or allow access to the wound. Ask the clinic which option is appropriate.

If your pet gets at the wound or damages stitches, prevent further access and contact the clinic for advice. Do not try to clean, close, or treat an opened incision yourself.

Handle appetite and the first hours after anesthesia

A pet may be subdued or less interested in food on the first evening after anesthesia. Follow the clinic’s feeding instructions, especially if the operation involved the digestive tract or the veterinarian prescribed a specific diet. If the discharge plan allows food but does not specify how much, a smaller first meal is one approach described in VCA’s dog guidance; do not use that as a substitute for procedure-specific instructions.

Contact the hospital about vomiting, regurgitation or retching, persistent diarrhea or blood in the stool, breathing difficulty, pale gums, or marked lethargy. A mild cough after airway intubation should diminish; call if it persists or worsens. Breathing difficulty or severe, rapid deterioration calls for emergency veterinary care.

Keep restrictions in place until the veterinarian changes them

Attend scheduled rechecks and have sutures or staples removed if the clinic directs you to. Some stitches dissolve under the skin and do not need removal; ask the veterinary team which type your pet has. A closed-looking incision alone does not mean that unrestricted activity is safe. The treating veterinarian sets when your pet can return to stairs, jumping, play, bathing, swimming, and normal exercise.
