Scrubbing the basin is a separate task: clean it when algae or grime appears, and follow the CDC’s advice to clean and refill it weekly or when visibly dirty. The recommendations differ by source, so use the more frequent water-change routine for bird care and treat visible buildup as a prompt to scrub.
How often should you change birdbath water?
Cornell Lab of Ornithology recommends changing birdbath water every day or two, and the National Audubon Society recommends daily or every other day. Feathers and droppings can make water unsanitary; frequent changes also limit the opportunity for mosquito eggs or larvae to develop. In warm weather, check the water more often and change it when debris or dirt appears.
The CDC gives a different interval in its wildlife guidance: clean and refill a birdbath weekly or when it is visibly dirty. These are not identical schedules. For a more frequent bird-care routine, follow Cornell and Audubon’s daily-to-every-other-day guidance; the CDC interval is its public-health guidance. How often should you scrub the basin?
You do not need to give the basin a full scrub every time you replace the water. Scrub when algae, grime, or bacterial-looking mats appear, and clean it at least weekly in line with CDC guidance. Cornell advises scrubbing immediately if algae starts growing; its algae guidance says to change the water at least every three days, and more often in warm weather. That page’s interval is less frequent than Cornell’s general daily-or-every-other-day advice, so use the latter as the more frequent routine.
