Short answer: A northern water snake (Nerodia sipedon) is nonvenomous, while a water moccasin is a cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus), a venomous pit viper. Their ranges overlap in some regions, and both can live beside ponds, rivers and lakes, so no single visual clue is reliable. Compare several features from a safe distance—especially the pattern shape, local range and, only if clearly visible without approaching, head and eye traits. If you cannot identify the snake confidently, leave it alone.
Quick comparison
| Feature | Northern water snake | Water moccasin (cottonmouth) |
|---|---|---|
| Scientific name | Nerodia sipedon | Agkistrodon piscivorus |
| Venom | Nonvenomous | Venomous pit viper |
| Typical pattern | Crossbands generally widest across the back; lower sides may break into irregular blotches | Crossbands generally widest on the sides and narrowest along the spine, often producing an hourglass impression |
| Head and eyes | Does not have a pit-viper facial pit | Vertical pupil, heat-sensing pit between eye and nostril, and a broad head distinct from the neck |
| Color with age | Reddish, brown, gray or black; older snakes can look nearly solid dark | Often darkens with age and may become almost uniformly dark |
| Typical size information | Connecticut DEEP reports adults can reach 24–42 inches | North Carolina Wildlife reports adults commonly measure 3–4 feet; individuals are known to reach 6 feet |
| Where the clue works | Pattern, location and behavior are supporting evidence, not guarantees | Pattern and head traits are useful only when visible without getting close |
The table is a starting point, not a license to approach a snake. Wet skin, shade, age, distance and viewing angle can change its apparent color and pattern.

Use several clues, in this order
1. Start with distance and a safe viewing angle
Stop where you are and give the snake room to move away. Do not pick it up, pin it, move it with a tool or kill it for identification. A distant photograph taken without blocking its escape route may help a local wildlife professional, but a photograph cannot guarantee a species identification. Never walk closer just to obtain a sharper image of the eyes or mouth.
Look from the side or from a place where you can see the back naturally. Do not lean over a coiled snake, reach toward it or stand between it and water or cover. The safest identification decision is the one that does not require a closer look.

2. Check whether the species occurs in your area
Location is an important filter because cottonmouth distribution is regional. Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection states that cottonmouths do not occur in Connecticut and describes southern Virginia as the northern extent of their range. That statement is specific to the regional information in that fact sheet; it should not be generalized to every state. Check a current state or provincial wildlife-agency range map for the exact place where you saw the snake.
A water snake in a region outside the cottonmouth’s documented range is not automatically identified by that fact alone, but a confirmed local range can rule out one of the two possibilities. County-level boundaries, unusual sightings and changing agency maps deserve extra caution.
3. Examine the pattern geometry
Pattern shape is often the most useful comparison when markings are clear. On a northern water snake, the crossbands are generally broadest across the top of the body. As the bands descend the sides, they may become irregular, broken or blotchy. The pattern can be strongly contrasted in a young snake and much less obvious in an old, dark individual.
Recommended Free Tools
Cottonmouth crossbands tend to be broadest on the sides and narrowest along the top of the back. Viewed from above, this can create dark hourglass-like shapes. The shapes are not perfectly regular on every individual, and mud, reflected water and shadows can obscure the narrow portion over the spine.
Do not decide from one stripe. Trace several consecutive bands along the visible body and ask where each band is widest. If the snake is folded, partly submerged or hidden in vegetation, the geometry may not be readable at all.

4. Treat color as a weak clue
Northern water snakes may be reddish, brown, gray or black. Older individuals can become so dark that their pattern is difficult to see. Cottonmouths also darken as they mature and may appear nearly uniform. A black-looking snake is therefore not identified by color alone.
Water changes the view. The National Wildlife Federation notes that “an individual northern water snake may look different in water than on land.” Wet scales reflect light, hide fine edges and make a patterned animal appear darker or smoother. Compare only what is actually visible, and do not infer a species from a single photograph taken through glare.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Consider the head, pupil and facial pit only from a safe distance
Cottonmouths are pit vipers. Florida Fish and Wildlife identifies a vertical pupil and a heat-sensing facial pit between the eye and nostril as distinguishing traits. The same guidance notes that the brow ridge overhangs the eye, so the eyes are not visible when the snake is viewed from above. North Carolina Wildlife describes the cottonmouth’s head as distinctly wider than its neck.
These details are supporting evidence, not a reason to approach. A distant, unobstructed side view may show a vertical pupil or the pit, but a blurry image, a closed eye, a tilted head or a shadow can make the feature impossible to judge. Never attempt to force a snake to raise its head or open its mouth.
Head shape is also affected by posture. A nervous nonvenomous water snake can flatten its head and neck, while a cottonmouth may not display a dramatic triangular profile when stretched out. Treat a broad or narrow-looking head as one clue among several.

6. Use habitat and behavior as context, not a test
Both species may be found near water, so “it was beside a pond” does not settle the question. Northern water snakes use freshwater habitats and may dive when disturbed. Cottonmouths occupy many wet habitats and may retreat, hold their ground, coil, vibrate the tail or gape to expose the white lining of the mouth.

A snake that remains in place is not automatically a cottonmouth, and a snake that flees is not automatically a harmless water snake. Defensive behavior varies with temperature, cover, escape routes and how close a person is.
Behavior should help you decide how much space to give the animal—not whether to test it. Any snake that is cornered or handled can bite.
7. Use size only to rule out extremes
Size ranges overlap, so a ruler is not an identification tool. Connecticut DEEP reports northern water snakes reaching 24–42 inches. North Carolina Wildlife reports typical adult cottonmouths at 3–4 feet, with known individuals reaching 6 feet. A medium-sized snake can fit either description, and perspective can make a snake on the far bank look smaller than it is.
Estimate length only from where you already are. Do not follow, stretch or block the snake to measure it.

How northern water snakes can fool observers
They change appearance with age
Young northern water snakes often show stronger reddish or brown patterning. As they age, the background may darken and the bands can become less conspicuous. This natural variation can make an adult look like a different species from a juvenile.
They flatten the head when threatened
A northern water snake may flatten its head and body in a defensive display. That can make its head seem more triangular than it normally is, creating a misleading resemblance to a pit viper. Head shape should never override the pattern and range evidence.
They are seen in the same places
Shorelines, marsh edges, slow streams and ponds provide suitable habitat for both species in portions of the Southeast and nearby regions. Water access therefore narrows the possibilities only slightly. Local distribution is more informative than the fact that the snake was wet.

Dark adults may lose their obvious pattern
Older cottonmouths often become darker, and the hourglass bands may be difficult to see in low light or on a wet body. Do not assume that a uniformly dark snake is a harmless species—or that every dark snake is a cottonmouth.

The mouth display is not a required feature
Gaping to show a white mouth lining is a defensive behavior, not a permanent identification mark. A cottonmouth may retreat or remain still instead. Conversely, provoking a nonvenomous water snake can produce a dramatic display. Never approach a snake to see whether it will gape.

A practical identification checklist
- Freeze your position and create space. Keep people and pets away from the snake’s path. Leave an unobstructed route to water or cover.
- Record the location. Note the state or region, habitat type and whether the snake was in water, on a bank or in a yard. Check a current local wildlife-agency range map.
- Observe the back pattern. If several bands are visible, compare their width across the spine and sides. Broadest-on-top favors a northern water snake; broadest-on-the-sides favors a cottonmouth, but neither is conclusive alone.
- Note general color without relying on it. Record whether the animal is reddish, brown, gray, black or nearly uniform, while allowing for wetness and shade.
- Look at the head only from where you are. If a clear view already exists, note a vertical versus nonvertical pupil, a possible facial pit and whether the head is distinctly wider than the neck. Do not move closer.
- Watch what it does without provoking it. Diving, retreating, coiling or gaping provides context, not a species test.
- Stop when uncertainty remains. Treat an unidentified snake as potentially venomous and let it leave. Contact local wildlife authorities or a qualified wildlife professional if it is in a location where people may be at risk.
What not to use as a deciding test
- Color alone: both species vary and can darken substantially with age.
- Presence of water: both use wet habitats.
- Head shape alone: posture and defensive flattening can distort it.
- Size alone: the documented ranges overlap.
- Temperament: fleeing, holding position or gaping is variable behavior.
- “Triangular head” rules: many harmless snakes can flatten the head, and a cottonmouth may not show a pronounced triangle at every angle.
- Handling or killing the snake: this creates the greatest bite risk and is unnecessary for identification.
When a snake is near a home, dock or trail
Move people and pets indoors or to the far side of a barrier, then wait. Most identification problems become safety problems when someone tries to corner or relocate the animal. If the snake is in a place where contact is likely—such as a narrow walkway, doorway or play area—call a local wildlife agency or a qualified professional and describe the location from a safe distance.
Do not seal the animal into a shed, throw objects, spray it or attempt to drag it away. Give it time and an escape route. A professional can advise on lawful, species-appropriate removal in your jurisdiction.
Natural-history facts that are not identification tests
Reproduction statistics can be useful for learning about the species but cannot identify an individual snake. The National Wildlife Federation gives a northern water snake litter range of 12–36 young. North Carolina Wildlife gives a cottonmouth litter range of 3–14 young. These figures describe natural-history variation, not a field method; a person will almost never know a snake’s litter size from an encounter.
Likewise, the documented maximum lengths are not targets for visual comparison. A snake’s distance from the observer, body position and partially hidden length make field estimates imprecise.
How reliable can a photograph be?
A photograph can preserve useful context—pattern geometry, location and the relationship between head and neck—but lighting, wetness, motion blur and viewing angle can remove the very details needed for a confident identification. A single image should be treated as a request for expert advice, not proof of species or safety.
If you take a picture, stay back, use optical zoom instead of walking closer, and include a wide shot showing the habitat. Do not surround the snake or disturb vegetation to obtain a different angle. Share the location and date with the local wildlife authority if you need help.
Learning more safely
A regional snake field guide can help you learn the full set of species in your area, including harmless snakes that are commonly mistaken for cottonmouths. Choose a guide produced for your state or region and compare its range maps with current wildlife-agency information. A field guide is for studying photographs and specimens already documented—not for justifying a closer approach to a live snake.

Decision rule to remember
Use pattern geometry, local range and any safely visible head traits together. If those clues do not agree, or if the view is poor, do not force a conclusion. Distance is the correct response to an uncertain snake, whether it is a northern water snake, a cottonmouth or another species entirely.
