A tiny aquarium snail cannot be identified reliably from color or a single photograph. Start with shell architecture: overall shape, the direction of the aperture, whorl pattern, and whether a movable operculum (trapdoor) is present. That screening can put a specimen in the New Zealand mudsnail, bladder-snail, ramshorn, or trumpet-snail group, but a very small snail may require magnification and local expert confirmation before you move, discard, or treat anything.

What you can—and cannot—tell from a quick look

Aquarium snails arrive most often as unnoticed hitchhikers on plants, décor, or other wet equipment. Shell form is more useful than color because lighting, algae, age, and shell wear can change appearance. Even careful screening is not a complete worldwide identification key: several unrelated species can share a general shape, and young snails may not show all adult features.

If the identification could affect a waterway, a legal obligation, or the health of another aquarium, treat a visual match as a working hypothesis. Keep the specimen and its water contained, photograph it from more than one angle, and ask the invasive-species authority or a qualified malacologist in your jurisdiction to confirm it.

Do not confuse “common in aquariums” with “invasive.” A snail can be harmless, native, established but unregulated, prohibited, or subject to a watch list depending on where you live. The same common name may also be used for several species. Identification and legal status are separate questions.

A step-by-step visual screening method

1. Classify the overall shell shape

View the shell from the side and from the opening end. A long, tapered outline points toward a mudsnail or trumpet-snail form. A nearly flat coil that looks like a disk points toward a ramshorn-type form. A compact, thin shell with a pronounced pointed end may fit a bladder-snail form, but the opening direction must still be checked. Do not use shell color, banding, or how fast the snail moves as a species test.

Note whether the spire rises sharply, tapers gradually, or is almost absent. A New Zealand mudsnail has an elongated, tapered shell. Melanoides, commonly called a trumpet snail, is also elongated but has a gradually tapering spire. A Planorbarius-type ramshorn has a flat, planispiral coil with no obvious pointed spire. These are screening categories, not final identifications.

2. Determine which way the shell opens

Hold the shell with its spire pointing upward and the aperture (the shell opening) facing you. Record whether the aperture is on the right or left. This is a handedness check, so turn the specimen rather than guessing from a photograph taken at an angle. The direction is a strong clue, but it is useful only when the aperture is clearly visible and the shell is not distorted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A New Zealand mudsnail has a right-opening, or dextral, shell. The acute bladder snail, Physella acuta, is described as left-opening in the cited identification guidance. A reversed or upside-down image can make either observation appear wrong, so label the orientation of every photograph.

3. Count and inspect the whorls

Look for the spiral turns and the grooves separating them. Deep, clearly separated whorls can distinguish a tapered shell from a smooth-looking juvenile. Counts are supporting evidence, not a pass/fail cutoff: official and municipal descriptions differ for some populations. Record an approximate count and note whether the grooves are deep, shallow, or obscured by wear.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) describes New Zealand mudsnails as having seven to eight whorls separated by deep grooves, while Bellevue’s municipal guide describes five to six whorls in western U.S. specimens. That difference may reflect population, specimen size, or descriptive method. Do not reject a possible mudsnail solely because your count does not match one number.

4. Look for an operculum

An operculum is a movable plate that can close the aperture like a trapdoor. Use a hand lens or microscope and observe the live snail retracting, if possible; do not pry the animal out. Presence of an operculum narrows the possibilities, but it is not unique to one invasive species. A missing plate in a damaged or empty shell is not evidence that the living snail lacked one.

When the snail is alive, wait for it to withdraw naturally. The plate may be easiest to see as the animal closes the shell. If the shell is empty, cracked, or covered with growth, record the feature as “not observed,” rather than “absent.”

5. Magnify before making a high-stakes call

Washington State guidance notes that a powerful magnifying loop or microscope may be needed to identify New Zealand mudsnails positively because they can be difficult to separate from small native snails. A loupe improves your view; it does not confirm a species by itself. Photograph the shell through the magnifier if your phone can focus, and include a ruler or millimetre grid for scale.

A handheld magnifying loupe is an optional, low-cost tool for seeing whorl grooves, the aperture edge, and a possible operculum. No particular brand, price, or magnification is required by the official guidance. If the image remains ambiguous, a microscope photograph or specialist examination is more useful than repeatedly guessing from the same blurry view.

6. Preserve evidence and write down the context

Take a top, side, and aperture-facing photograph. Add a scale, keep the image in focus, and avoid placing the snail on a patterned background. Record the aquarium location, date and time, water source, recent plant or livestock additions, and—if known—the supplier or collection site. Michigan reporting guidance specifically asks for photographs plus the observation’s location, date, and time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the original files and note whether the snail was alive, how it was oriented, and whether eggs or additional snails were present. Context does not prove a species, but it helps an agency evaluate a report and determine whether containment or follow-up is needed.

Lookalike comparison

Likely group Shell clues used in the cited guidance How to interpret the match
New Zealand mudsnail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) Small, elongated, tapered shell; aperture on the right; an operculum; USGS describes 7–8 whorls separated by deep grooves and an oval aperture shorter than the spire. Consistent with a suspected mudsnail, not proof. Bellevue’s municipal guide describes 5–6 whorls in western U.S. specimens, so whorl counts vary by source and population.
Acute bladder snail (Physella acuta) Left-opening shell. USGS identifies the aquarium trade, especially movement of aquatic plants, as a modern pathway for its spread. This is one possible lookalike, not a complete key to all bladder snails or all aquarium “pest” snails.
Planorbarius, a ramshorn-type snail Flat, planispiral coil with no obvious pointed spire. The cited identification guide concerns New Zealand fauna; it does not establish that every aquarium ramshorn is invasive or regulated.
Melanoides, a trumpet-snail form Elongated shell with a gradually tapering spire and an operculum. Trade availability does not by itself make a snail invasive or illegal. Confirm the species and local rules.

When two possibilities remain, prioritize shell architecture, aperture direction, whorls, and the operculum over color. Include several views in a request for help because one-angle photos commonly hide the opening or trapdoor.

Size can support, but not settle, a comparison. USGS reports New Zealand mudsnails measuring 4–6 mm in the Great Lakes and growing to 12 mm in their native range. Those figures describe geographic observations, not a universal minimum or maximum for every aquarium population. A larger or smaller specimen should still be examined by shape and handedness.

Understanding the main candidate: New Zealand mudsnail

What the name refers to

The New Zealand mudsnail is Potamopyrgus antipodarum, a tiny species native to New Zealand and nonindigenous in multiple parts of the United States. The USGS Nonindigenous Aquatic Species Database describes its shell as “dextral (right-handed coiling), elongated” with “7-8 whorls separated by deep grooves.” That wording is a useful description, not a universal cutoff for every specimen.

Size is geographic, not a universal maximum

USGS reports specimens measuring 4–6 mm in the Great Lakes and growth to 12 mm in the native range. Those figures describe the regions in that profile; they should not be used as a guaranteed maximum or minimum for an aquarium snail elsewhere.

Why a visual match needs confirmation

Small mudsnails can resemble native snails, and a juvenile may have too few visible details for a confident call. A confirmed identification matters most where the species is prohibited, subject to reporting, or capable of being transported to connected waters. Keep the evidence contained while an authority evaluates it.

USGS tracks nonindigenous U.S. occurrences, but a database record does not determine the law in every state, province, or country. Michigan’s prohibited- and watch-list language is Michigan-specific, and Bellevue’s whorl description refers to western U.S. specimens. Always check the authority serving your address.

How the common lookalikes fit

Acute bladder snail

Physella acuta is a documented aquarium-trade lookalike. USGS says its modern spread has occurred through the aquarium trade, mostly with aquatic plants. A left-opening shell supports that identification, but a single handedness observation does not identify every bladder-snail species or rule out a damaged shell.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ramshorn-type snails

A flat, disk-like planispiral shell is the visual hallmark of a ramshorn-type form such as Planorbarius. “Ramshorn” is a common-form label rather than a complete species identification. The cited New Zealand guide does not determine the invasive status of all ramshorn snails sold or found in aquariums, so avoid treating the shape alone as a legal conclusion.

Melanoides or trumpet-snail forms

Melanoides has an elongated shell, a gradually tapering spire, and an operculum. Those traits can make it look superficially similar to a mudsnail. The presence of a trapdoor and a pointed shell narrows the comparison but does not establish species, origin, or whether possession is restricted where you live.

Where an aquarium snail may have come from

Aquatic plants are a plausible route for moving small snails and their egg masses. USGS identifies plant movement within the aquarium trade as a modern pathway for acute bladder snail spread. A 2026 draft U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plan also discusses aquarium and aquatic-plant trade as plausible pathways for New Zealand mudsnails. Because that plan is explicitly a draft, it does not show how any particular snail entered your aquarium.

Keep the pathway information as evidence, not proof. Write down when plants or livestock were added and where they came from, but do not accuse a supplier or assume that every hitchhiker is an invasive species. Aquarium water, nets, décor, and wet substrate can also move organisms between tanks, so treat shared equipment as a possible transfer route until the specimen is identified.

What to do while identification is pending

  1. Stop transfers. Do not move the suspect snail, plants, substrate, nets, décor, or aquarium water to another tank, outdoor pond, drain, or natural waterway.
  2. Isolate a sample safely. If you must remove one for photography, place it in a tightly closed, clearly labelled observation container with a small amount of the aquarium water. Keep that container away from sinks and storm drains.
  3. Document the aquarium. Photograph the specimen and record its size, location, date, recent additions, and source information. Save the original files rather than only a compressed social-media image.
  4. Contact the relevant authority. Find the invasive-species or natural-resources agency for your state, province, or country. Ask what evidence it wants and whether it has rules for reporting, containment, transport, or disposal.
  5. Follow the authority’s instructions. Legal status and required disposal methods vary by jurisdiction. Do not ship a live specimen to an expert unless the agency specifically tells you how to do so.

Do not pour aquarium water into a household drain while an authority is advising you, especially if local rules direct a different disposal method. Keep plants and equipment damp only as needed for animal welfare during observation, and keep all containers labelled so nobody accidentally returns the specimen to a display tank.

Why a chemical treatment is not a safe default

No single aquarium-safe control method is established here for every combination of fish, invertebrates, plants, filter bacteria, and substrate. A product that kills a snail can also harm shrimp, other mollusks, fish, plants, or the biological filter, and an uncertain identification makes dosing decisions riskier. Do not add a generic molluscicide, “snail-free” plant product, or biological-control animal on the assumption that the specimen is a New Zealand mudsnail.

Do not release a suspected snail, its eggs, aquarium water, or plant material outdoors. A treatment that appears to remove visible adults may leave eggs or contaminated water behind, and it does not address the reporting or legal question. The cited authorities do not establish one universal dip, chemical concentration, or quarantine duration that is safe for every aquarium setup.

Cleaning equipment: aquarium care versus field gear

USGS recommends cleaning and disinfecting gear to prevent New Zealand mudsnail spread between waterbodies. That recommendation is for outdoor field equipment. It is not a direction to pour field-disinfectant concentrations into a populated aquarium or apply them to fish, plants, or filter media. For an aquarium, keep suspect materials isolated and ask the local authority or an aquatic veterinarian for a method compatible with the animals and equipment you need to preserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Never infer that a field protocol is safe merely because it is effective on boots, waders, or nets. Aquarium systems contain living animals and a biological filter, and the correct handling of a planted tank can differ from that of empty field gear.

Geography and legal status matter

Distribution and regulation are not universal. USGS tracks nonindigenous U.S. occurrences; its occurrence table was last updated September 12, 2026. Michigan’s prohibited- and watch-list language applies to Michigan, not automatically to another state or country. Bellevue’s whorl description refers to western U.S. specimens. New Zealand identification pages describe species and occurrence in New Zealand. Use those sources as regional guidance and verify the rule that applies to your address before transporting or disposing of a live snail.

If you live outside the United States, the names and reporting channels may differ. Contact the national or regional invasive-species service rather than relying on a U.S. list. A local authority can also tell you whether a snail is native, established, prohibited, or simply unregulated in your area. Ask specifically about possession, sale, transport, release, and disposal; those rules may not be identical.

A practical decision checklist

  • Flat coil: investigate a ramshorn-type group, while recognizing that the form alone does not establish invasiveness.
  • Long, tapered shell with an operculum: compare New Zealand mudsnail and trumpet-snail possibilities and obtain confirmation.
  • Clear left-opening shell: consider an acute bladder snail, then verify the species.
  • Opening or trapdoor hidden: take additional views or use magnification before deciding.
  • Possible legal or ecological consequence: contain the aquarium materials, document the observation, and contact the jurisdiction’s authority.
  • No reliable match: report the uncertainty honestly; “unidentified aquatic snail” with good photographs is more useful than a confident but unsupported species name.

When a magnifier is worth using

A handheld loupe is an optional, low-cost aid when the snail is only a few millimetres long and you need to see whorl grooves, the aperture edge, or an operculum. Use it to improve photographs and notes, not to claim certainty. The deciding evidence may still require a microscope image or an expert familiar with local native and invasive species.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Position the light from the side so grooves cast small shadows, but avoid overheating or drying a live specimen. Return the snail to its contained observation vessel after imaging, and clean the viewing surface so no water or eggs are carried to another tank.

How to request a useful expert identification

Send three or more sharp images: a side view showing the entire spire, an aperture-facing view with the shell oriented correctly, and a close-up of the whorls or operculum. Add a scale and the observation’s location, date, and time. Explain whether the snail is alive, where it was found in the aquarium, and what plants or animals were added recently. This gives an agency enough context to distinguish a possible invasive species from a common hitchhiker and to tell you what to do next.

State what you observed instead of forcing a label: for example, “approximately 5 mm, elongated shell, right-opening aperture, trapdoor not visible.” Include several specimens if they look different, because one aquarium may contain more than one snail type. Ask whether the agency wants the live specimen retained, photographed only, or handled under a specific disposal instruction.

Common identification mistakes

  • Using color as the key: algae, lighting, shell age, and wear can change color and banding.
  • Counting whorls as an absolute rule: published counts differ, including seven to eight in USGS guidance and five to six in Bellevue’s western U.S. description.
  • Calling every pointed snail a mudsnail: Melanoides and other trumpet forms can also have a tapered shell and operculum.
  • Assuming a plant source proves origin: plant movement is a plausible pathway, not proof of how a particular specimen arrived.
  • Treating first and documenting later: chemicals may destroy evidence and harm aquarium inhabitants.
  • Applying outdoor disinfection recipes to a tank: field-gear concentrations are not automatically safe for fish, plants, invertebrates, or filter media.
  • Releasing unwanted snails: ponds, drains, streams, and natural waterways can spread organisms and contaminated water.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell a New Zealand mudsnail from an acute bladder snail?

Check shell handedness with the spire up and aperture facing you. New Zealand mudsnail is described as right-opening, elongated, and equipped with an operculum; the acute bladder snail, Physella acuta, is described as left-opening. Tiny or damaged specimens can defeat this comparison, so use several photographs and seek local confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many whorls does a New Zealand mudsnail have?

USGS describes seven to eight deeply separated whorls, while Bellevue’s municipal guidance describes five to six in western U.S. specimens. Treat the count as supporting evidence, not an infallible cutoff.

Can a photograph identify my aquarium snail?

A clear photograph can narrow the possibilities, but one angle may hide the aperture or operculum. Provide side, top, and aperture-facing views, a scale, location, date, and recent plant or livestock history. A microscope image or expert review may still be needed.

Should I remove a suspected invasive snail immediately?

Do not transfer it, its plants, substrate, or aquarium water to another tank or waterway. If you remove a specimen for imaging, keep it in a closed, labelled observation container and ask the relevant invasive-species authority about reporting and disposal.

Is every ramshorn or trumpet snail invasive?

No. A flat planispiral shell suggests a ramshorn-type form, and an elongated shell with a tapering spire and operculum suggests a trumpet-snail form, but neither shape alone establishes species, invasiveness, or legal status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use a snail-killing chemical while I wait?

No universal aquarium-safe treatment is established for every combination of fish, shrimp, other mollusks, plants, substrate, and filter bacteria. An uncertain identification also makes dosing riskier. Wait for authoritative instructions rather than using a generic molluscicide or biological-control animal.

Where should I report a possible New Zealand mudsnail?

Contact the invasive-species, natural-resources, or environmental agency serving your state, province, or country. Reporting rules and legal status are jurisdiction-specific; Michigan’s lists, for example, do not automatically apply elsewhere.

What size is a New Zealand mudsnail?

USGS reports 4–6 mm specimens in the Great Lakes and growth to 12 mm in the native range. Those are geographic observations, not a universal size range for every aquarium population.

The Bottom Line

Screen the shell, not the color: shape, aperture direction, whorls, and an operculum are the most useful first clues. A tapered right-opening shell is consistent with a New Zealand mudsnail, but tiny specimens and lookalikes make confirmation important. Keep the snail, plants, equipment, and water contained; document the observation; avoid unverified chemicals and outdoor release; and follow the invasive-species authority for your jurisdiction.
