Yes, an adult male North American wolverine can weigh as much as 40 pounds, and its tracks can look surprisingly broad. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service gives adult male weight as 26–40 pounds, while field guides place a front print at roughly 4⅜–5⅝ inches long and 3½–4⅝ inches wide. Parks Canada describes a characteristic print as 10–12 centimetres long and 8–10 centimetres across.
Those measurements are reference ranges, not a species test. Snow depth, melted edges, foot placement and the animal’s furred feet can change the outline. A large print is only consistent with a wolverine until toe arrangement, pad shape, claws and a sequence of tracks support the identification.

How big are wolverine tracks?
Wolverine tracks are large relative to the animal, but published measurements differ because agencies measure different parts of the print and summarize them differently. Keep each set of figures with its source rather than averaging them into one supposed standard.

| Parks Canada, Glacier National Park field guidance | 10–12 cm long and 8–10 cm across | A simpler characteristic print description |
The ranges overlap in useful ways, but they are not interchangeable. A fresh, sharply edged front print may measure differently from a partly collapsed hind print. A stretched or angled foot can also make a track appear longer. If you record a measurement, state whether it is a front or hind print, how you measured it and how clear the edges were.

Why a 40-pound animal leaves such a broad impression
Weight is an upper-end figure, not a typical promise
The 40-pound number comes from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s stated range for adult male North American wolverines: 12–18 kilograms, or 26–40 pounds. It identifies the top of that range, not the weight of every wolverine or even every adult male. Sex, age, season and individual condition all affect the animal’s mass.
Track width does not translate directly into body weight. A lighter animal can spread its toes in soft snow, while a heavier animal stepping on a firm crust may leave a compact outline. Treat the weight figure as context for why the animal can make a substantial track, not as a way to calculate an individual’s mass from one print.
Five toes, a broad foot and fur
Wolverines have five toes on each foot. The fifth toe does not always register, especially when the foot sinks unevenly or the snow collapses around the outer edge. Their feet are heavily furred, which can soften toe boundaries and blur the pad’s outline. Claws are often visible, but they are not guaranteed to appear in every impression.

How to measure a suspected wolverine track
A photograph and a repeatable measurement are more useful than a visual estimate. Work from the clearest print in a sequence, and avoid stepping beside it until you have documented it.
- Photograph before touching the area. Take a nearly overhead image and several lower-angle images that show depth. Include a ruler or another object with a known size. Parks Canada suggests using a glove as a scale object when reporting a sighting; a ruler is better when available.
- Record the conditions. Note the date, location, snow depth if known, whether the snow is powder or crust, and whether the edges are fresh, melting or collapsed. These details determine how much confidence to place in the dimensions.
- Measure length consistently. Measure from the most forward toe impression to the back of the heel or rear pad, following the print’s long axis. Do not include a separate drag mark or a ridge created by displaced snow.
- Measure width at the widest point. Record the broadest left-to-right span of the print, and state whether the outer fifth toe was visible. If the print is angled, photograph it and mark that the measurement is approximate.
- Identify the foot only when possible. A single print may not reveal whether it is a front or hind foot. If several impressions are clear, compare their shapes and positions rather than assigning a foot from size alone.
- Preserve the original evidence. Do not press a hand into the track, brush away snow or pour material into it. Those actions destroy the details that another observer would need to check.
Use the National Park Service ranges and the Parks Canada description as comparison points, not pass-or-fail thresholds. A print outside one published range may reflect a different foot, measurement convention or snow condition.
What the track pattern can tell you
Loping and repeated prints
Wolverines commonly move with a loping gait. In snow, that movement can produce groups of impressions that are more informative than one isolated mark. Look for repeated foot shapes, the spacing between them and whether the same toe and pad details recur.
Gait is not fixed. Terrain, speed, obstacles and snow depth can change the pattern, so a sequence should be treated as supporting context rather than a rigid template. A track line that appears to skip a foot may reflect overlap, wind filling or a print hidden beneath another.

Measure the sequence, not just the largest mark
When a series is available, photograph at least three or four consecutive impressions without walking through them. Compare each print’s length, width, toe count and pad shape. If only one impression is sharp and the others are vague, label the identification accordingly: “consistent with wolverine” is more accurate than a definitive species claim.
Could a large snow track be something else?
Yes. The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies cautions that bear, wolf, lynx and domestic dog tracks can be confused with wolverine tracks. Size alone cannot separate these animals, particularly in soft snow or when the track has melted.
| Feature to compare | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Toe count and arrangement | Can you see five toes, and are the outer toes repeated in other prints? | A missing or merged toe can change the apparent shape; repeated impressions reduce that uncertainty. |
| Pad shape | Is the central pad visible, and is its outline sharp or blurred? | Pad details may survive when the edge of the track does not, but fur and snow can obscure them. |
| Claws | Are claw marks visible in several prints, or only in one damaged impression? | Wolverine claws are often apparent, not invariably so; one absent claw mark proves little. |
| Length and width | Do measurements fall near a published wolverine reference range? | Dimensions help narrow possibilities but cannot identify a species by themselves. |
| Sequence and gait | Do multiple tracks form a coherent travel pattern? | A sequence provides context that a single impression lacks. |
| Snow and print clarity | Are edges crisp, wind-scoured, melting or collapsed? | Environmental distortion can enlarge, shorten or erase details. |
Bear, wolf, lynx and dog remain plausible alternatives whenever the toe and pad evidence is incomplete. Avoid rules such as “a track wider than a certain number is always a wolverine.” That kind of cutoff ignores the differences between front and hind feet and between snow conditions.

How snow changes the apparent size
Soft powder
In powder, the foot can punch deeply and push snow outward. The resulting rim may make the print look wider than the foot, while the bottom of the impression holds the most reliable shape. Photograph both the rim and the deepest visible surface.

Crust, melt and wind
A crust can break under part of the foot, creating an irregular extension. During a thaw, toe gaps fill and the outline slumps outward. Wind can scour one side of a print or fill the center with loose snow. Record these effects instead of trimming them mentally from the measurement without explanation.
Overlapping steps
An animal may place a hind foot near or over a previous front print. The combined mark can be much longer than either individual foot. Search along the track line for a cleaner impression before using the largest mark as your sample.

Tracks are evidence of passage, not an invitation to follow the animal. Wolverines are elusive, and a den area requires particular care. Parks Canada’s Glacier National Park guidance states: “Remember, never follow tracks toward an animal and if you suspect you are near a wolverine den site, please leave the area immediately and notify park staff on your return.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Stop where you are if the trail appears fresh or leads into dense cover.
- Keep people and dogs away from the track line and any suspected den site.
- Photograph from a distance and record the location without approaching the animal.
- Leave the area by the route that causes the least disturbance.
- Report a suspected sighting or den to the relevant park or wildlife staff, following local rules.
Do not attempt to flush an animal for a better photograph. A close encounter can stress the wolverine and put you at risk, while a hurried approach usually produces poorer evidence than a distant, scaled photograph.

How to report a possible wolverine track
A useful report lets another observer evaluate the evidence. Include:
- Exact location or the nearest named trail, with coordinates when it is safe and appropriate to share them.
- Date and time, weather, snow condition and whether the print looked fresh.
- Measurements in the units you used, identifying front, hind or unknown.
- Photographs with a scale object, plus an unscaled image showing the surrounding sequence.
- Number of visible toes, pad appearance, claw marks and any overlapping prints.
- Direction of travel and the approximate length of the visible track line, without following it toward the animal.
Phrase the conclusion conservatively: “five-toed, broad tracks consistent with wolverine” communicates what the evidence supports. “Confirmed wolverine” requires stronger verification than a single field photograph can normally provide.
Why the size is surprising
People often expect a smaller track because a wolverine is not a large bear or wolf. Its broad, furred feet distribute weight over snow and provide traction, producing an impression that can look out of proportion to the animal’s body. The contrast is especially striking when a 26–40-pound adult male moves across a clean snowfield and leaves a front print several inches long and wide.
That visual mismatch is useful only as a reason to investigate carefully. It is not evidence that the animal weighed 40 pounds, nor is it enough to distinguish a wolverine from every other large-footed mammal.
A field checklist for a large track
- Have you photographed the print before approaching it?
- Is there a ruler, glove or other scale object in the frame?
- Did you record whether the print is a front, hind or unknown foot?
- Can you document five toes, even if the fifth is faint?
- Are the pad and claw details visible in more than one impression?
- Did you measure length and width without including a collapsed rim or drag mark?
- Are there several tracks showing a coherent sequence or loping gait?
- Could bear, wolf, lynx or dog explain the same evidence?
- Did snow depth, melt, wind or overlap reduce confidence?
- Did you leave the trail rather than follow it toward an animal or den?
Further learning
If you want to identify tracks regularly, a dedicated animal-tracking or snow-tracking field guide is more useful than a single-species chart. The USDA Forest Service snow-tracking chapter is a substantive reference category because it covers measurement, comparison and the effects of snow conditions. Use the edition and regional guidance that match the place where you track; track shapes and reporting rules vary by habitat and agency.
