The most reliable way to improve a horse’s jump is to improve the horse-and-rider partnership first: establish a balanced, adjustable canter, make the rider’s position secure and quiet, then use poles and carefully chosen grids for a specific purpose. Raise the fences only when the previous exercise is calm and repeatable. No single exercise can completely remake every horse’s technique, and a sudden deterioration should be investigated rather than trained through.
What makes a jump better?
A useful definition of a “better” jump is not simply more height. You are looking for a regular approach, a confident takeoff, a balanced arc, a safe landing and a horse that remains relaxed and rideable afterward. The rider should be able to influence pace and line without pulling for balance, and the horse should be able to stretch its neck and use its back.

The British Horse Society (BHS) teaching material puts the canter at the centre of jumping preparation. The horse needs to go forward with impulsion while staying supple, bending both ways, travelling straight and responding promptly to the leg and rein aids. Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) training guidance makes the complementary point that the rider’s body affects the horse: “Your posture will affect the horse you are riding.”
Use the nine tips below as a progression, not a rigid weekly programme. The right number of repetitions, fence height and exercise complexity depend on soundness, fitness, experience, footing, facilities and the confidence of both horse and rider.

1. Establish rhythm and responsiveness on the flat
Before you add a fence, check whether the horse can maintain a regular canter through turns and transitions. A horse that rushes, falls onto a shoulder or loses balance in the corner will usually find a jump harder, not easier.
What to practise
- Ride large circles and changes of rein while keeping the same tempo.
- Use transitions within the gait—slightly shorter and slightly longer canter—without flattening or quickening.
- Ask the horse to bend around both legs, then ride straight lines with the shoulders and quarters aligned.
- Confirm that the horse responds to a light leg aid and can come back from a half-halt without dropping behind the leg.
Do not chase a dramatic outline. The goal is a balanced, forward canter in which the horse can look where it is going and the rider can adjust the stride without a tug-of-war.
2. Start with one ground pole
A single pole lets the pair learn to organise the approach and step over an object without the psychological and physical demand of a fence. Trot over it first if the canter is not yet consistent, then repeat in canter when the horse stays relaxed.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A gradual introduction
- Place one pole on a straight approach and ride over it in both directions.
- When the horse stays rhythmic, introduce a second and then a third pole, spacing them for this horse’s natural stride and the gait you are using.
- Only after the horse walks, trots or canters through the poles calmly should you replace the final pole with a small cross pole.
This is an adaptable sequence, not a schedule that every horse must complete in one session. If the horse becomes tense, goes faster or starts jumping the poles, return to the simpler version.
3. Make the rider’s position stable over simple exercises
Low poles and small fences provide time to improve the rider’s body control without asking the horse to solve a difficult technical question. FEI rider exercises focus attention on the head, shoulders, hands, heels and core, with a light two-point position between fences.

Position checks
- Keep the eyes up and looking along the intended line, not down at the pole.
- Allow the hips to close over the fence while the lower leg stays at the girth and the heel remains weighted.
- Support the upper body with the core rather than gripping the reins or the horse’s neck.
- Keep the hands independent and quiet so they can follow the horse’s mouth.
Practise the same alignment over a pole on the ground before increasing height. If you cannot maintain it at a walk or trot, a higher fence will usually magnify the problem.
4. Keep the hands soft and following
A horse cannot use its neck freely if the rider fixes the hands at the moment of takeoff. The contact should remain elastic: enough to guide the shoulders and regulate the canter, but not so strong that the horse braces or shortens its neck.

Ask a coach to watch, or record a side-on video, and check whether the horse can stretch its nose and neck over the fence. Look for a hand that moves forward with the mouth as the horse leaves the ground and returns smoothly after landing. A crest release or a short following hand can be taught safely at low fences, provided the rider does not lose the line or balance.
Do not use the horse’s mouth as a handhold. If you feel the need to pull to stay secure, lower the exercise and rebuild the two-point position on the flat.
5. Choose poles for a clear training goal
Polework is most effective when you know what you are trying to change. The same set of poles can become counterproductive if the spacing is inappropriate or the rider keeps repeating it after the horse has become anxious.

| Training goal | Useful starting exercise | What to monitor |
|---|---|---|
| Rhythm | One or several poles on a straight line | Even tempo before, over and after the poles |
| Straightness | Poles on a centre line or between guide rails | Shoulders and quarters remain aligned |
| Stride adjustability | A line that allows a slightly shorter or longer effort | Change in stride length without rushing |
| Rider position | Low pole or simple fence with a long approach | Eyes up, stable lower leg and following hands |
| Confidence | Simple, familiar pole pattern | Relaxed ears, breathing and a calm return to the canter |
| Technique | Coach-designed grid with poles or small fences | Front-leg action, bascule and a balanced landing |
There is no universal “correct” distance. Stride length, pace, footing, terrain and the horse-rider combination all change the appropriate spacing. Measure and adjust with a qualified instructor rather than copying a number from another arena.

Jumping courses rarely offer identical approaches. The horse must be able to shorten for a related distance, lengthen when the line allows it and stay balanced through turns. Develop this skill on the flat and over poles before asking for it between raised fences.
A practical progression
- Canter a straight line and establish a repeatable number of strides between two markers without jumping.
- Repeat while asking for a modestly shorter stride, then a modestly longer stride. Keep the tempo steady; do not create the change by simply speeding up or slowing down.
- Add poles or small fences only when the horse remains straight and the rider can keep the same quiet position.
- Finish with a normal, comfortable effort so the horse does not leave the session expecting every approach to be difficult.
Use the actual space and footing available to you. A related distance that is safe in one arena may not be safe in another, and a fit, experienced horse may need a different plan from a green or less athletic one.
7. Use grids to develop straightness and technique
Grids combine poles and fences at planned intervals so the horse has fewer decisions about where to take off. FEI examples include bounces, oxers and V-poles. V-poles can help keep a horse straight on the approach, while a carefully built sequence can encourage a more organised shape over the fence.
Grid work is not a shortcut to a perfect jump. As FEI notes, “While you may struggle to completely change a horse’s jumping technique, there are definitely ways to improve their bascule, develop athleticism and agility, and help them to make a better shape over fences.”

Grid safety rules
- Build the exercise with a knowledgeable coach who can check every distance and pole angle.
- Begin with poles or very small elements and add only one challenge at a time.
- Use breakaway or otherwise appropriate safety equipment where required by your facility and governing rules.
- Keep an escape route and enough room to regain balance after the grid.
- Stop if the horse rushes, repeatedly hits poles, refuses, lands disunited or loses confidence.
Never raise an element simply because the horse has completed it once. Quality, relaxation and a balanced exit are the measures of progress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Plan a progressive session instead of repeating a hard effort
A productive jumping session has a purpose, a warm-up, a gradual build and a deliberate finish. BHS coaching guidance recommends agreeing the lesson aim, selecting exercises that suit the pair and evaluating whether the aim was achieved.
Example session structure
- Warm up: Walk, trot and canter in both directions. Include transitions, circles and a few changes of rein.
- Prepare: Ride one ground pole, then repeat in the other direction. Confirm rhythm and straightness.
- Develop: Add a second or third pole, or a small cross pole, depending on the horse’s response.
- Focus: Work briefly on the chosen goal—such as a following hand, a straight approach or a controlled stride adjustment.
- Link: If the horse remains relaxed, connect two simple elements. Do not add complexity merely to fill time.
- Finish: Return to an easy exercise, allow the horse to stretch and cool down appropriately.
Take breaks between efforts. Fatigue changes the rider’s balance and the horse’s coordination, making an exercise that was appropriate at the start unsafe later.
9. Assess the pair and the conditions before every ride
The best exercise is the one that matches the horse, rider and environment on that day. BHS coaching criteria include position, balance, coordination, confidence, suitability, the horse-rider relationship and a risk assessment for health, safety and welfare.
Pre-session checklist
- Is the horse moving freely and evenly, with no unexplained change in behaviour or performance?
- Are the saddle, bridle and protective equipment correctly fitted and in usable condition?
- Is the arena surface level, secure and appropriate for the planned work?
- Does the weather, light or noise make the horse less settled than usual?
- Can the rider maintain balance and control at the proposed gait and fence height?
- Is a qualified instructor available for a new grid, unfamiliar distance or significant confidence issue?
If the horse suddenly jumps differently, becomes reluctant, bucks, rushes or loses coordination, do not diagnose the cause from an exercise sheet. Stop the difficult work and seek suitable veterinary, saddle-fitting or qualified coaching help as appropriate. Training cannot replace an assessment of pain, soundness or equipment.

How to choose the right exercise
Use the following decision points before setting poles or fences:
- For rhythm: choose a simple pole pattern and remove visual or technical complications.
- For straightness: use a centre-line approach, guide poles or coach-supervised V-poles.
- For rider position: select a low, uncomplicated exercise with a long approach and enough recovery space.
- For confidence: repeat a familiar task at an easy height and end after a calm success.
- For technique: use a structured grid only when the horse is straight, relaxed and the rider can follow softly.
Consider the available space, footing, the horse’s experience and whether someone competent can supervise the setup. A simpler exercise performed well is more useful than an impressive exercise that produces tension or mistakes.
Common problems and sensible adjustments
The horse rushes to the pole
Return to flatwork, re-establish a balanced canter and use one pole on a straight approach. Avoid pulling harder in the final strides; improve the canter earlier in the line.
The horse drifts at the shoulder
Lower the difficulty, ride a clear line between guide poles and check that the rider is not looking or leaning to one side. A coach can identify whether the drift begins in the turn or only near the obstacle.
The rider loses balance on landing
Lower the fence and practise two-point over poles. Keep the lower leg stable and let the hands follow rather than grabbing the reins or mane at the last moment.
The horse becomes tense or stops
Do not keep repeating the refusal. Remove the fence, walk or trot over a familiar pole, and finish only when the horse is calm. If the change is sudden or persistent, arrange an appropriate professional assessment.
