Let the cat choose whether to approach. Give it a quiet retreat and a clear way to leave, ask the visitor to stay calm and keep their distance, and stop at the first sign of discomfort. A greeting or a pet is not required for a safe, successful introduction.
Before the visitor arrives: make retreat easy
Set up a quiet, familiar place where your cat can hide or rest without having to pass the visitor. Keep the route open and make sure no one will follow the cat there. A safe space and freedom from forced interaction are central to ASPCA adoption advice.

Tell the visitor what helps your cat feel comfortable. Ask them to sit or stand at a comfortable distance, speak softly, and avoid staring, looming, reaching, chasing, picking the cat up, or blocking its way out. These are practical ways to respect the cat’s choice; they are not a guaranteed method for preventing fear or aggression.

- Let the cat notice the visitor on its own terms. The visitor can remain quiet and let the cat investigate if it wants to. Do not carry the cat over, pull it out of hiding, or lure it close and then touch it.
- Keep contact optional. Some cats enjoy being stroked, some prefer to sit near people without being touched, and others want contact only when they initiate it. If your cat approaches in a relaxed way, you can tell the visitor whether a brief hand sniff or gentle pet seems appropriate. An approach does not mean the cat wants prolonged petting or to be picked up.
- Stop when the cat opts out. Let it move away or return to its safe space. Ask the visitor not to follow. A calm visit where the cat chooses to watch from a distance counts as a successful introduction.
Individual cats differ in how much social contact they prefer, and stress can lead to fight, flight, freeze, or fidget responses. International Cat Care’s Cat Friendly Homing Information Pack emphasizes that cats can be distressed when they cannot predict or control what is happening. Choice and distance give the cat more control; they do not guarantee it will approach.

Read the cat’s signals and give space
Body language is not a diagnosis from one cue, but clusters of defensive or threatening signals mean the visitor should stop interacting and move away. ASPCA guidance describes signs such as:
- Crouching, a tucked tail, flattened ears, raised fur, or wide or dilated eyes
- Hissing or spitting, growling, or a stiff upright posture with a direct stare
- Moving toward a person in a threatening way, swatting, scratching, or biting
ASPCA’s rule is: “not touch, attempt to reassure, or punish cats showing these postures!” Read its full guidance on aggression in cats. Do not try to soothe a frightened or aroused cat by reaching for it, and never put your hands between fighting cats.

A cat may also become uncomfortable during petting after initially accepting it. Stop and give space if it quickly turns toward the hand, flicks or twitches its tail, flattens or moves its ears back and forth, becomes restless, or develops dilated pupils. A cat that tolerates touch may not enjoy it, so do not wait for a swat or bite to end contact.
What should I do if my cat hides from guests?
Let the cat stay hidden. Keep the visitor from approaching or reaching into the hiding place, and preserve the cat’s route to its safe space. Do not drag it out or try to make it greet anyone. The visitor can carry on quietly without contact, or the meeting can end; the cat does not need to come out for the introduction to count.

Hiding is one possible sign of distress, but it does not by itself establish a medical or behavioral diagnosis. International Cat Care also lists possible signs such as reduced play, changes in grooming, toileting outside the litter tray, eating or drinking less, vomiting, and diarrhea. If signs are severe, persist, or appear with an abrupt behavior change, consult a veterinarian.
Can treats or toys help a cat meet a visitor?
If you know your cat enjoys a particular treat or toy, you can offer it as an option while keeping an escape route open. Do not use food or play to draw the cat into a situation where it cannot retreat, and do not treat taking a snack or playing as permission to pet it. Some cats may form positive associations this way; others may prefer distance.

ASPCA Senior Manager of Behavior Marny Nofi says of helping an adult cat respond to fearful stimuli: “Being patient and using something the cat likes (playtime, a favorite treat or toys) will help her learn a new way to respond to fearful stimuli.” The advice appears in ASPCA’s account of Cinnabun; it is not a promise that a treat or toy will make every cat comfortable with visitors.
When to get veterinary or behavior help
Keep visitors at a safe distance and speak with a veterinarian if your cat injures someone, shows repeated or severe aggression, or changes behavior suddenly. Pain and other medical conditions can contribute to aggression, so a veterinary assessment matters. A veterinarian can also help you find a qualified behavior professional to develop an individual plan if needed.

New people and household changes can be relevant triggers for territorial behavior. In some cats, the scent of another cat on a visitor or their clothing may also contribute to redirected aggression. These possibilities are reasons to avoid handling a cat that is already aroused—not reasons to assume every cat will react badly to guests.
