Introduce a kitten to an older cat gradually: start with a separate room, move from scent to barrier-protected sights, and allow face-to-face meetings only when both cats appear comfortable. There is no reliable fixed deadline. The first goal is calm, safe coexistence—not instant friendship.
1. Set up a separate home base for the kitten
Before the kitten meets your resident cat, give the newcomer a quiet room with food, water, litter, bedding, and places to rest. Keep the door closed so the kitten can settle without an immediate encounter. International Cat Care recommends keeping the kitten’s room closed initially, and the Humane Society of the United States likewise advises starting a new cat in a small area.

Keep the cats apart whenever you cannot supervise them. Separation is part of a gradual introduction, not a punishment.
2. Wait until the kitten is settled before swapping scents
Let the kitten adjust to the new home before beginning scent exchanges. A kitten that is still unsettled may not be ready for another new experience. International Cat Care advises waiting until the kitten is fully adjusted before exchanging bedding.

3. Introduce scent before sight
Swap bedding, or use a soft cloth that has picked up one cat’s scent and leave it where the other can investigate at its own pace. The cats can learn about each other without being forced to approach. Both International Cat Care and the Humane Society recommend exchanging scent-bearing items before or as part of visual introductions.
Watch each cat’s response. If either avoids the item or seems distressed, give them more time rather than bringing them closer together.
4. Let each cat explore the other’s space separately
Once the kitten has settled, let each cat investigate areas the other has used while the cats are safely apart. Control doors so they cannot surprise one another around a corner or slip into an unplanned meeting. This lets them encounter the other cat’s scent in more than one place without direct contact.

5. Start visual introductions through a secure barrier
When both cats are coping with scent, allow them to see one another while remaining physically separated. A glass or mesh door, or a sturdy baby gate fitted with mesh, can work if it prevents the kitten from climbing over, squeezing through, or making accidental contact. The Humane Society also describes using a cracked door or baby gate for visual introductions.
Begin with brief glimpses and enough distance that both cats can remain composed. Do not force either cat to approach the barrier; end the session or increase distance if one appears uncomfortable.
6. Pair brief sightings with something positive
If both cats remain relaxed, offer food or treats on their respective sides of the barrier. Start far enough away that each can eat comfortably. Over successive sessions, you can gradually move the bowls closer if both continue to eat calmly. If either cat stops eating or becomes tense, increase the distance again.

7. Keep first face-to-face meetings short and supervised
Move to a shared room only after the cats have managed calmer barrier sessions. Choose a quiet setting, supervise closely, and keep the first meeting brief. If possible, have a person available to watch each cat. Reward calm behavior and be prepared to separate them without shouting or chasing if tension rises.
Do not leave the cats together unsupervised until they have demonstrated peaceful behavior. ASPCA recommends short, supervised reintroduction sessions and increasing their time together gradually after peaceful interactions.
8. Balance kitten energy with the older cat’s need for breaks
A kitten’s age does not guarantee that it will suit an older cat. Personality, experience with other cats, and the resident cat’s tolerance all affect the match. The Humane Society cautions against choosing by age or personal preference alone and notes that a high-energy kitten can be stressful for a cat with a different temperament.

Give the kitten appropriate play and make sure the older cat has safe places to retreat where the kitten cannot pester it. One ASPCA story describes a household that separated a kitten and a 9-year-old cat at night and used supervised daytime play; it is an individual account, not a promise that the same routine will work for every pair.

Hissing, growling, swatting, or other aggression is a cue to separate the cats and slow the process. Do not let them “work it out” in an uncontrolled fight. Return to a stage they can handle, such as scent exchange or brief, supervised barrier sessions, and increase access only after they are behaving peacefully.

How long should you keep a new kitten separate?
Keep the kitten in its separate room until it has settled, then progress according to both cats’ behavior rather than a fixed calendar. International Cat Care’s 2024 kitten booklet suggests exchanging scents for about a week if possible before visual introductions. That is an example, not a universal minimum, a guaranteed schedule, or a prediction of when the cats can share a room. Some pairs need a longer gradual process.
Look for signs that both cats can remain comfortable at the current stage—for example, calmly investigating scent or eating during a barrier session—before moving on. If either struggles, step back.
What to do if your older cat hisses at the kitten
Separate them calmly and give the older cat space. A hiss is a reason not to push the meeting forward; it does not establish that the cats will never coexist. Resume with a less direct step, such as scent exchange or a more distant, brief view through a secure barrier, and only progress when both appear comfortable. If aggression continues or becomes serious, seek qualified behavior help.
What success looks like at first
Do not measure progress by whether the cats cuddle or play together. For now, success means they can encounter each other’s scent, see one another, or share supervised space without escalating distress. Friendship may develop, but it cannot be promised; calm coexistence is a worthwhile initial goal.
