How to choose a treat for your cat
Start with the reason you want a treat
Decide whether you need a small training reward, a crunchy or soft snack, a lickable treat, a chew, a dental product or a way to give medication. A format that works for one purpose may not work for another: a cat that licks food may reject a crunchy bite, while a treat intended for occasional rewards may not be suitable as a pill carrier. Supervise cats with chews, treats and toys, and choose a size and shape that reduce choking risk.
Compare calories and servings
Find calories per piece or serving and the package’s feeding directions. If calorie information is missing, WSAVA advises asking the manufacturer. Compare the cost per serving only after you know how many treats make a reasonable portion; the lowest package price alone does not tell you how much a treat routine will cost.

Read the ingredient list against your cat’s needs
Look for ingredients your cat must avoid and consider known sensitivities. “Natural,” “limited ingredient,” grain-free or functional marketing language does not by itself prove a treat is appropriate for an individual cat. If your cat has a medical condition, food sensitivity or veterinary-prescribed diet, ask the veterinary healthcare team before introducing conventional treats.

Check life-stage and veterinary-diet fit
Confirm whether the product is meant for kittens or adult cats and follow the exact package directions. A treat sold for a particular life stage or health goal is not automatically appropriate for every cat in that group. For a cat on a therapeutic diet or a weight-management plan, choose treats with veterinary guidance rather than assuming a product label makes it compatible.

Let your cat’s response matter
Preference is individual. Offer a small, appropriate amount and observe whether your cat accepts the texture and tolerates it. Avoid buying a large supply until you know the cat will eat that format.
Keep treats within a safe calorie budget
The World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s owner handout says, “Treats should always make up less than 10% of a cat’s daily calorie intake.” The percentage is a ceiling, not a target; calorie needs vary by cat. Treats should not replace a complete and balanced meal. If the amount is unclear, ask your veterinarian how to fit treats into your cat’s daily feeding plan. - Use portions appropriate to the cat’s size and ability to chew; supervise chews and toys.
