Introduce an adopted dog to children and resident pets in stages: first give the dog a quiet retreat, then arrange brief, calm, supervised meetings that let each animal move away. Go at the pace of the individuals involved—not a fixed number of days—and pause or seek professional help if you see fear, repeated chasing, or aggression.
Prepare the home before introductions
Set up a quiet dog-only resting area that children and resident animals cannot enter. Keep the first days calm, limit visitors, and let the dog explore at its own pace. The American Animal Hospital Association’s adoption-transition checklist recommends a calm, quiet environment during the first week: AAHA: Bringing home a new pet.

Ask the shelter or rescue what is known about the dog’s experience and behavior around children, dogs, cats, and small animals. The Association of Shelter Veterinarians says behavior records should accompany animals at transfer or adoption. Its 2022 guidelines also advise adopters and foster caregivers to make introductions to children and resident pets safe, gradual, and controlled: ASV Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters, Second Edition.
Before the dog arrives, explain simple rules to children: approach quietly; do not chase, hug, kiss, grab, or take things from the dog; and leave it alone while it eats, sleeps, rests in its safe area, or has a valued toy. The dog must be free to move away.

Introduce the dog to children
Start with one child and a brief, calm visit
Choose a quiet setting and have an adult actively supervise from the start. Let the dog decide whether to approach; do not lure it into contact or hold it in place. If both the child and dog stay relaxed, an adult can show the child how to stroke gently along the dog’s shoulder. Avoid the top of the head and tail, and end the visit if the child becomes overexcited or the dog seems uncomfortable. RSPCA Australia provides practical guidance on introducing dogs to children: How do I introduce a new dog or puppy to children?
Supervise every interaction
Never leave a child alone with a dog, even one that seems quiet or familiar. When an adult cannot directly supervise, use a secure physical barrier so the child and dog cannot reach each other. Keep the dog’s retreat available rather than using it as a place to confine the dog with children nearby. AAHA and RSPCA Australia both recommend supervision and separation when needed.

Watch for signs the dog needs space
RSPCA Australia lists avoiding eye contact, yawning, lip licking, and holding the tail low as possible signs of discomfort. These signals do not diagnose what a dog will do next; treat them as a reason to calmly end the interaction and give the dog space. Do not ask the child to keep trying to pet or approach.
Introduce the dog to resident dogs
Meet on neutral ground
If possible, arrange the first meeting outdoors or in another neutral area rather than in the resident dog’s home territory. Use calm handlers and loose leads, keep the meeting short, and allow both dogs to disengage. Watch both animals for fear, distress, or aggression. VCA’s introduction guidance emphasizes gradual meetings and reading both dogs’ responses: Introducing dogs to each other. The page was edited July 19, 2019; its practical management advice should be considered alongside newer adoption-transition guidance.

Keep resources separate at first
Feed the dogs in separate areas and give them separate places to sleep and rest. Do not leave them together unsupervised during the early adjustment period; AAHA advises waiting several weeks before allowing dogs to spend time together without supervision. Let their behavior, not a calendar date, guide the pace.
Respond calmly to warning signals
Do not punish growling. It is useful communication that a dog is uncomfortable; suppressing it can remove a warning without resolving the underlying problem. If an interaction looks unsafe, calmly interrupt, redirect, and separate the dogs. Resume only at an easier stage if both dogs can remain comfortable.

Introduce the dog to a resident cat
Begin with separation and scent
Do not start with an immediate face-to-face greeting. Keep the animals in separate areas, exchange bedding or toys so they can become familiar with each other’s scent, and offer meals on opposite sides of a closed door. Move on only when both animals are calm. SPCA New Zealand describes this gradual process in its guidance on introducing dogs and cats: Introducing dogs and cats.
Make visual meetings controlled and optional
For a planned meeting, keep the dog on a leash and under control, begin at a distance, and allow the cat to choose whether to approach. Keep sessions short and repeat gradually. Do not introduce a cat in a cage: the cat needs a way to move away rather than being trapped within reach.

Protect the cat’s escape routes
Provide high places, hiding places, and routes into dog-free areas. Keep the animals separated whenever nobody is supervising until the dog’s behavior makes contact safe. A dog with a strong prey drive may never be safe to leave alone with a cat, and kittens are especially vulnerable. If the dog fixates, chases, or behaves aggressively, prioritize the cat’s safety and get individualized professional advice rather than assuming repeated exposure will solve the problem.
What to do if an introduction goes badly
Separate the animals carefully if you see aggression, repeated chasing, or persistent fear. Do not force another meeting to see whether they have “gotten over it.” Return to an earlier, easier stage—such as distance, a closed door, or separate rooms—and proceed only if the animals can remain calm. If an introduction has gone poorly, SPCA New Zealand advises seeking professional help promptly.
Contact your veterinarian or a suitably qualified behavior professional when concerning behavior persists or when the dog shows predatory or aggressive behavior. A dog may not be safe for a household with a particular child or pet, even with management; the Association of Shelter Veterinarians cautions that management cannot prevent aggressive incidents in every case. Get case-specific advice before taking risks with a resident animal.
How to judge the pace
There is no guaranteed adjustment timeline. Advance when the dog and the other individual can stay relaxed, disengage, and use the space available to them; step back when they cannot. The aim is not to make every animal interact, but to manage the home safely and allow relationships—if they develop—to do so without pressure.
