Introduce swimming in small, voluntary steps: start at a calm, shallow entry, let your dog choose whether to approach, and stop before they become tired or distressed. Keep a properly fitted dog life jacket on while they learn, stay close enough to help, and make sure they can find an easy way out. A dog’s breed or enthusiasm does not guarantee that they can swim comfortably or safely.
Before the first swim: check health, conditions, and exits
If your dog has a known or suspected health problem, ask your veterinarian whether swimming is appropriate before starting. Health conditions such as heart or lung disease may affect a dog’s ability to exercise in water. This is general guidance, not a substitute for advice tailored to your dog. VCA’s overview of water sports for dogs discusses supervision, health considerations, and water hazards.
Choose a quiet place with calm water, a shallow approach, and a reliable exit. A gradual shoreline lets your dog wade and turn back to stand; avoid conditions where current, depth, or poor visibility make it difficult to stay close. Check local rules and access restrictions. For a pool, identify the steps or ladder before the dog enters and plan to guide them back to that exit.
Fit and practice with a life jacket on land
Use a dog life jacket while your dog is learning. Let them inspect and wear it at home first, pairing it with treats or another positive experience. Choose a snug fit that allows comfortable movement; a sturdy grab handle can help you guide or assist the dog, and bright or reflective details can improve visibility. Measure your dog and follow the manufacturer’s sizing instructions rather than choosing by breed alone. See the AKC guide to choosing a dog life jacket.

Let your dog approach the water at their own pace
- Begin at the edge. Give your dog time to look, sniff, and explore. If it is safe, you can wade a few steps into shallow water and invite them with a treat or toy.
- Reward small choices. Praise or treat a voluntary approach, even if your dog only wets their paws. Let them retreat whenever they choose.
- Increase depth only while they remain relaxed. Progress from paw-wetting to wading, then to a brief paddle toward you or a toy if the dog seems comfortable. Keep the water shallow enough for an easy return to standing.
- Stop at signs of reluctance or stress. Do not throw, pull, carry, or pressure a frightened dog into the water. If they keep avoiding it or appear stressed, end the attempt and try a different activity. Dr. Jerry Klein, AKC Chief Veterinarian, says that dogs who do not want to swim may be encouraged but should not be forced. The AKC’s beginner swimming lesson recommends building the experience gradually over several days rather than trying to accomplish everything at once.
A small, flat floating toy can be an optional reward; treats may work just as well. AKC recommends a small, flat toy for dogs that tend to swallow water while carrying toys. Do not use a toy to lure a dog farther out than they are comfortable going.
Keep swimming short, supervised, and easy to leave
Stay close enough to help throughout the swim, including when your dog is in or near a pool. Watch for signs of fatigue and give regular breaks; some dogs may keep swimming even when they are tiring. There is no single session length or water temperature that suits every dog, so judge by your dog’s condition and the setting. Jennifer Fish, owner of Dogs Gone Swimming Wellness Center and a canine hydrotherapy certificate holder, estimates that “one minute of swimming roughly equals four minutes of running on land.” Treat that as her estimate, not a measured conversion for every dog.

Make exit practice part of the lesson. At a shoreline, keep the way back to the bank clear. In a pool, show your dog the steps or ladder and practice reaching them before allowing a longer swim. Pool fencing can help prevent accidental access, but it does not replace supervision.
A leash may help keep a beginner within reach in a safe, controlled shallow area, but never leave a dog tethered in water where the leash could snag or create another hazard. Follow local leash rules and qualified local guidance. VCA cautions that leashes can be hazardous in water.

Adjust the lesson to a shoreline or a pool
| What to consider | Gradual-entry shoreline | Pool |
|---|---|---|
| Entry and depth | Choose a gently sloping bank so the dog can wade progressively and turn back to stand. | The edge may be abrupt; begin by showing the dog where the steps or ladder are. |
| Water hazards | Check for current and other local conditions; choose calm water and stay close. | Keep the dog under continuous supervision around both the water and pool edge. |
| Exit | Keep the route to the bank clear and within reach. | Practice reaching the steps or ladder so the dog has a dependable way out. |
| After swimming | Bring fresh drinking water and do not let the dog drink untreated natural water. | Rinse the coat with fresh water, gently dry the ears, and store pool chemicals securely. |
For pool-specific precautions, including chlorine-pool safety, follow the pool owner’s rules and keep chemical products out of your dog’s reach.

Bring fresh drinking water so your dog is less likely to gulp pool water or drink from a lake, river, or other untreated source. If your dog develops vomiting, lethargy, bloating, loss of coordination, restlessness, drooling, pale gums, dilated pupils, or glazed eyes after being in the water, contact a veterinarian immediately. AKC lists these as possible signs of water intoxication in its pool-safety guidance.
