Australasian Bittern Listening Surveys are BirdLife Australia’s trained volunteer effort to detect one of Australia’s most secretive wetland birds by its deep male booming call. In 2026, survey windows run from September through December across parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and southern Queensland. Volunteers complete safety and survey training, then listen at a local wetland and record habitat and observation details.

What an Australasian Bittern listening survey is

The Australasian bittern is a cryptic wetland bird that can remain hidden in dense reeds and rushes. Seeing one is difficult, even where birds are present. During the breeding season, however, males produce a distinctive repeated booming call. Listening surveys use that sound to establish whether bitterns are using a wetland and to improve knowledge of where suitable habitat remains.

BirdLife Australia coordinates the volunteer program under the name Australasian Bittern Listening Surveys. Participants receive instruction in survey methods and occupational health and safety, travel to an assigned or locally coordinated wetland, listen during the appropriate calling period, and document the site and conditions. The activity is listed as beginner level, but attendance at the required training is part of taking part.

Why a call-based approach is useful

Bitterns are hard to count by sight because they are secretive, blend into vegetation and may stay motionless when approached. A booming call can reveal a male without requiring a visual encounter. A positive detection therefore provides valuable information even when no bird is seen. A quiet survey, on the other hand, does not prove that a bittern is absent: calling varies, and weather, background noise, observer position and the bird’s behavior all affect detectability.

When and where the 2026 surveys take place

BirdLife Australia’s 2026 listing gives four survey windows. The dates are windows rather than a promise that every wetland will be surveyed on every night. The organiser asks volunteers to be available intermittently between September and December, and dates or signup status can change, so check the live BirdLife listing and local coordinator instructions before making travel plans.

2026 window Typical use
25–29 September Early-season survey window
24–28 October Mid-spring window
23–27 November Late-spring window
22–26 December Early-summer window

The listed Australian coverage includes southern Western Australia, south-east South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and southern Queensland. Coverage is not a claim that every wetland in those jurisdictions is open for public, independent surveying; locations, access and assignments are arranged through the program.

Participation requirements

  • Availability at some point between September and December, rather than only one fixed night.
  • Completion of BirdLife’s training in survey methods and occupational health and safety.
  • Access to a car or participation in a coordinated survey effort.
  • Ability to spend about 1½ hours surveying, in addition to travel time.
  • Willingness to follow the current instructions for the assigned wetland and to record observations accurately.

The listing does not establish a required purchase of a recorder, special clothing or other consumer equipment. Ask the coordinator what is supplied and what is appropriate for the particular site instead of assuming that gear used in technical monitoring is necessary for volunteers.

How the listening method works

Season and time of day

BirdLife schedules the activity in spring and summer, the breeding season when booming is most likely to be heard. Its public description highlights dawn and dusk, and identifies a still, clear night with a full moon as especially favorable for listening.

A technical bittern protocol from New Zealand’s Department of Conservation provides more specific timing for observer surveys: begin about 30 minutes before local sunset and continue to one hour after sunset during the peak season, generally September through early November. Acoustic recorders can also sample the period before sunrise, when calling rates are generally highest. Those timings explain why a coordinator may choose an evening or pre-dawn deployment, but they do not replace BirdLife Australia’s training or site-specific directions.

What observers listen for

The target is the male’s low booming call. At a small wetland, trained observers may listen from several positions, approach carefully and use the apparent direction of calls to triangulate a bird’s location. The purpose is not to chase or flush a bittern; it is to gather a reliable detection while minimizing disturbance.

At larger, remote or difficult-to-access wetlands, autonomous acoustic recording devices can collect sound for later analysis. Recorders are a monitoring option used by researchers and land managers, not a stated requirement of BirdLife’s volunteer event. Call-playback is sometimes mentioned in monitoring literature, but its effectiveness is unclear and it should not be treated as a required or proven part of this survey.

Weather and noise limits

Sound carries best when conditions are calm. The Department of Conservation protocol states: “Conduct counts in calm, fine weather, and avoid listening during rain, strong wind and when there are other excessive noises (planes, trains, automobiles).” Postpone or follow the coordinator’s revised plan when conditions make listening unreliable or unsafe.

Choose the right monitoring design for the question

Not every listening event has the same purpose. The distinction matters when interpreting a result.

Monitoring goal or setting Approach What it can support Main limitation
One-off presence/absence inventory Trained observers listen during the calling period and document any booms. An indication that bitterns use the wetland at the time of the survey. A non-detection cannot establish true absence.
Repeated monitoring at the same sites Repeat visits using consistent timing, positions and recording rules. A more interpretable index of booming males over time. Changes in weather, water levels, effort or method can obscure real change.
Small wetland where observers can move safely Listening from multiple points, with careful approaches and triangulation. Better localization of calling birds. Access, vegetation and disturbance risk may limit movement.
Remote or extensive wetland Autonomous acoustic recording, often combined with targeted listening. Coverage of places or hours that people cannot monitor continuously. Requires suitable deployment, retrieval and sound-analysis procedures.
Before-sunrise sampling Acoustic recording or an approved observer protocol. Sampling a period when call rates may be highest. Early starts, access and safety arrangements must be managed.

The New Zealand protocol describes these technical choices for bittern inventory and monitoring. Australian volunteers should use BirdLife Australia’s current method, not substitute an outside protocol for their training.

How to take part, step by step

  1. Find the current BirdLife Australia listing. Confirm that the 2026 windows, regional coverage and registration status still apply. Public schedules can change.
  2. Check your practical availability. You may need to attend one of several nights between September and December, travel after dark or before dawn, and spend about 1½ hours at the wetland plus travel time.
  3. Arrange transport. The listing asks for a car or participation in a coordinated survey effort. Do not assume that a remote wetland is reachable by public transport or that independent access is permitted.
  4. Complete the required training. BirdLife’s instruction covers survey methods and occupational health and safety. Use that training to learn the approved listening positions, recording procedure, access rules and emergency arrangements.
  5. Follow the assigned site plan. Arrive at the agreed meeting point, remain within permitted areas, and avoid entering habitat or approaching birds in ways not authorized by the coordinator.
  6. Listen during the instructed period. Keep voices and movement low, note the direction and timing of any boom, and distinguish a reported call from a visual sighting.
  7. Record conditions and observations. Include the survey start and finish, weather, cloud and moon visibility, notable noise, habitat observations and any bittern detections required by the form.
  8. Submit the completed record. Return notes or digital records through the channel specified by BirdLife or the local survey leader so results from different wetlands can be combined.

What to document in the field

A useful record connects the call to the place and conditions in which it was heard. Follow the program’s form if it differs, but expect to document items such as:

  • Observer names or team identifier, where requested.
  • Call time, approximate direction and whether more than one calling bird may be involved.
  • Any visual observation, kept separate from an audio-only detection.
  • Cloud cover, moon phase or visibility, wind, rain and temperature if the form requests it.
  • Aircraft, vehicles, trains, frogs, machinery or other sounds that mask calls.
  • Water level, reed or rush cover and other habitat notes relevant to wetland condition.
  • Access, safety or disturbance issues that could affect a repeat visit.

Consistent notes are especially important when a site is surveyed more than once. A repeatable method allows managers to ask whether an apparent change reflects bittern use, water conditions or simply a different listening effort.

How to interpret a quiet survey

Report a non-detection as “no bittern call heard under the survey conditions,” not as proof that no bittern was present. A bird may not call during the listening window, may be beyond the effective listening range, or may be masked by wind, rain or traffic. The New Zealand protocol recommends repeating surveys and keeping methods consistent when the aim is to estimate an index of booming males.

Do not turn one volunteer visit into a population trend. A single event can document use of one wetland on one night. Trends require repeated observations, comparable effort and attention to changing water regimes and habitat condition.

Why these records matter for conservation

Wetland suitability and hydrology strongly influence where Australasian bitterns can live and breed. Better records help identify important sites, understand how birds respond when wetlands are inundated, and decide where habitat restoration or water-management actions could help.

The Australian Government profile recognizes two geographically distinct Australian subpopulations:

  • South-eastern subpopulation: Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
  • South-western subpopulation: Western Australia.

The same government profile gives the following 2019 estimates of mature birds in Australia:

Estimate Figure How to read it
All Australia 1,300 mature individuals Best estimate of the wild population in 2019, before the Action Plan; not a current census.
Riverina rice-field population 500–1,000 individuals 2019 estimate for that population; a range reflecting uncertainty.
Remaining Australian population 247–796 individuals 2019 estimate for birds outside the Riverina rice fields; not a precise count.

These figures should not be presented as a current national total. The government notes that the species is cryptic and difficult to survey, which limits confidence in population and distribution estimates. The figures are most useful as dated context for why improved detection matters.

Indicators managers are watching

The Australian Government identifies improved knowledge of subpopulation size and better survey methods as indicators for assessing the population trajectory in 2027. Habitat indicators include improved condition at key sites and restoration of suitable wetlands. Threat-related indicators include reducing impacts from cats and foxes and improving or maintaining water regimes in bittern habitat.

A New South Wales Government report published on 27 May 2025 illustrates the value of sound data beyond a single volunteer night. It extracted Australasian bittern records from acoustic data gathered in six wetland regions for a southern bell frog conservation project. The analysis improved understanding of bittern distribution in the southern Murray–Darling Basin and showed how acoustic monitoring can assess responses to inundation in remote floodplain wetlands.

Safety, ethics and boundaries

  • Complete the organiser’s occupational health and safety training and follow the local risk assessment.
  • Use the assigned access route; wetlands may contain deep mud, open water, unstable banks, snakes, insects or poor mobile coverage.
  • Travel with the team or approved transport plan, particularly for night or pre-dawn work.
  • Do not enter private land, restricted reserves or waterlogged vegetation without explicit permission.
  • Keep disturbance low: quiet listening is more useful than repeated movement or attempts to force a visual sighting.
  • Do not use call-playback unless a qualified project leader specifically directs it under an approved method.
  • Leave habitat, reeds and nesting areas undisturbed, and report hazards or access problems rather than improvising a route.

What the survey can—and cannot—tell you

A well-run listening survey can confirm that an Australasian bittern called at a particular wetland under documented conditions. A series of comparable surveys can contribute to an index of booming males and reveal how detections relate to water levels, habitat condition or restoration. It cannot, by itself, produce a national census, prove a wetland is empty, or establish a population trend from one visit.

For the 2026 season, the practical next step is to check BirdLife Australia’s current listing, select a window you can support, complete the required training and follow the assigned survey method. The value of the work comes from careful listening, consistent records and safe participation—not from buying specialist equipment or trying to obtain a sighting.
