First confirm that the resort allows your dog on the exact chairlift and during the season you plan to visit. Many resorts prohibit pets on chairlifts, and a leash, harness, muzzle, or carrier does not override a ban. If dogs are permitted, follow that operator’s requirements and ride only if you can safely manage your dog while loading, riding, and unloading.
Check the resort’s rule before choosing equipment
There is no universal dog-on-chairlift policy. Rules can differ by resort, lift, season, and whether the animal is a pet or a service animal. Check the operator’s current guidance for the specific lift, then contact the resort if the allowed transport method or an exception is unclear.
- Whistler Blackcomb allows service dogs in gondolas, buildings, and restaurants, but not on chairlifts. Its guidance also says dogs must be harnessed or leashed and under control on the mountain.
- Killington does not allow pets on chairlifts or gondolas.
- Palisades Tahoe prohibits pets on winter ski runs and chairlifts.
- Breckenridge prohibits pets on chairlifts but publishes separate, limited conditions for service animals.
- Vialattea allows dogs on certain named lifts in winter, subject to conditions; the operator may refuse transport because of crowding or risk. Check its current list of lifts and rules before travelling.
Exceptions are specific, not transferable: permission at one resort does not establish permission elsewhere, and service-animal access rules should not be assumed to apply to pets.
Follow the permitted restraint or carrier rules
Use only the transport method the operator allows. For example, Vialattea requires dogs to wear a muzzle and be on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres; on chairlifts and aerial cableways, dogs must also be in a closed pet carrier. The 1.5-metre limit and carrier rule are Vialattea requirements, not general chairlift standards.

Do not clip or tie a dog to the chair or lift. If the policy requires a carrier, a harness or leash is not a substitute. Likewise, a harness does not make a ride acceptable where dogs are prohibited.
Manage loading, riding, and unloading safely
Before boarding
Follow lift staff directions and make sure you can control your dog throughout the process. Big White’s summer sightseeing safety guidance recommends a harness instead of a collar for added control when approaching the top of the chairlift, and advises holding dogs securely and following the lift’s loading and unloading directions. This is guidance for Big White’s summer operation; it does not establish access or equipment rules at other resorts or for winter ski lifts.

On the chair
Keep the dog restrained in the operator-approved way and under your control. Do not let the dog move independently or put other riders at risk. If you cannot maintain control without compromising your own safe position, do not board.
At the top
Prepare for unloading by following staff instructions and keeping hold of the dog as you leave the chair. The handler’s ability matters as much as the dog’s equipment: Breckenridge’s service-animal guidance says the animal must be unable to move independently and the handler must be able to load and unload safely.

Choose another option if the ride is not allowed or manageable
If the operator says no, do not try to work around the rule with gear or by presenting a pet as an exception. Ask whether that resort offers a gondola or another transport option that permits dogs; availability and access rules vary. Breckenridge recommends a gondola where possible in its service-animal guidance, while Whistler Blackcomb permits service dogs on gondolas but not chairlifts.
Chairlift rules also account for risks beyond the dog: a dog can be injured or behave unpredictably, create danger for people below, complicate an emergency evacuation, or cause a handler to lunge and lose safe restraint. Palisades Tahoe cites these concerns in its winter pet policy.
