To keep your dog comfortable on a rainy walk, match the gear and walk length to your dog and the conditions: use a well-fitted, water-resistant coat if your dog tends to get cold or soaked, introduce any clothing gradually, and dry your dog thoroughly when you get home. Boots and paw balm are mainly options for cold, icy, slippery, salted, or chemically treated surfaces—not necessities for every rainy walk.

Does your dog need a raincoat?

It depends on the dog, the weather, and how the dog responds outside. A raincoat may help a dog that gets cold or soaked, particularly a small, short-coated, lean, senior, or hairless dog. Dogs vary, so observe your own dog rather than treating a coat as essential for every walk. The American Kennel Club’s raincoat guidance describes coats as a way to keep a dog’s skin, fur, and ears drier.

If your dog is comfortable in the rain and does not seem chilled, you may not need clothing. If a coat causes distress, do not force it; build tolerance gradually or skip it.

How to choose a raincoat that works

Prioritize a water-resistant outer material and a fit that keeps rain out without limiting ordinary movement. A coat that is too tight can restrict your dog; one that is too loose can let water underneath. Follow the maker’s measuring instructions. The AKC recommends checking the neck, chest, and stomach measurements.

  • Freedom of movement: Your dog should be able to walk normally without the coat pulling or bunching.
  • Coverage: Consider how much of your dog’s body the coat covers, balanced against comfort and ease of movement.
  • Outer material: If keeping water out is the goal, avoid an absorbent fleece or flannel exterior.
  • Putting it on: Hook-and-loop straps can be convenient; buckles may hold a tighter fit during movement. Choose what your dog tolerates and what fits securely.
  • Visibility and extras: Reflective material can help in poor light. A detachable hood is an optional feature, not a requirement.

These are general selection considerations, not the results of comparative product testing. A snug, nonrestrictive fit matters more than a long list of features.

How to help your dog accept a coat or boots

Let your dog get used to clothing indoors, when calm, before expecting them to wear it outside. The AKC recommends a gradual, positive introduction:

If your dog resists or seems distressed, pause rather than insisting. Guidance on walking in rain or snow and getting a dog comfortable with clothing supports introducing gear while the dog is calm and increasing wear time in steps.

When boots or paw balm make sense

Ordinary rain alone does not mean every dog needs paw gear. Boots may be useful when paws face cold, ice, slippery ground, deicers, or other chemical treatments. Consider fit, traction, and whether your dog can tolerate putting them on and taking them off.

What to do after a rainy walk

Dry your dog promptly, paying particular attention to the belly, feet, and spaces between the toes. A towel by the entrance makes it easier to wipe your dog as soon as you get home. The AKC notes that microfiber can draw moisture from fur and skin; longer or dense coats may need especially thorough drying.

Adjust the walk when it is very cold

Rain combined with extreme cold calls for shorter exposure and close attention to your dog’s behavior. VCA identifies shivering, crying or yelping, and tugging at the leash as signs to head home. The sources do not establish one temperature cutoff or safe walk duration for every dog, so make the decision based on conditions and your individual dog.
