For digging, options include a buried fence-bottom barrier, partly buried rocks, or anchored chain-link. For climbing or jumping, remove nearby launch points and consider an inward-angled fence extension. Supervise your dog while you make changes; no fence modification is a guaranteed fix if the underlying need or distress remains.
First identify the escape route
Walk the entire boundary, including gates and damaged sections. Look for holes, gaps, loose panels, chew marks, and objects a dog could use to climb. Observe when and where your dog tries to get out, and whether it digs, climbs, jumps, chews, or slips through an opening. Until the route is secure, supervise outdoor time and block unsupervised access to the problem area.
Note the circumstances as well as the method. Attempts when the dog is left alone, during particular weather, or after long periods without activity can help you determine what needs to change beyond the fence.

- Install wire at the fence base. Bury chicken wire or another suitable wire barrier along the bottom, with sharp edges rolled inward and away from the dog. Ensure no sharp or exposed edges remain where the dog can reach them.
- Partly bury large rocks. Place them along the fence line to make digging there more difficult, while checking that they do not create a hazard or a new foothold.
- Anchor chain-link along the ground. Attach it securely to the bottom of the fence so it lies across the likely digging route.
- Bury the bottom of the fence. This is another option listed by the Humane Society of the United States.
There is no universally established wire gauge or burial depth in the cited guidance. Choose a method that suits the fence, soil, and dog, and check the finished barrier for gaps, loose material, and injury risks. These are practical recommendations, not comparative tests proving that one method works best.
How to stop climbing or jumping over the fence
Humane World for Animals recommends considering a fence extension angled inward at about 45 degrees. The existing fence must be suitable for the modification, and the finished installation should not leave gaps or create hazards. Check applicable local rules before changing fence height or adding an extension.

Remove launch points near the fence, such as tables, chairs, or a doghouse. Look for other objects the dog could climb onto, and reposition them so they cannot help it reach the top.
Address why your dog is trying to get out
Digging can have different causes; it is not always an attempt to escape. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine describes it as common canine behavior with varied causes, including natural tendencies and behavioral issues. Humane Society guidance also points to motives such as seeking attention, comfort, protection, or activity. A fence change may not resolve the behavior if the reason for digging remains.

If your dog is seeking comfort or protection
Make sure your dog has access to water and suitable shelter from the weather. Bring the dog indoors more often when appropriate. If digging happens in response to heat, cold, or exposure, improving conditions is part of the solution—not just reinforcing the boundary.
If your dog needs more activity or enjoys digging
Provide walks and play, and consider teaching your dog to use a designated digging area. A patch of loose soil or sand can make an appropriate spot more appealing; safe buried toys and praise can help reward its use. Continue to supervise and keep the fence line secured.

If attempts seem linked to fear or distress
Frantic efforts to escape, particularly when your dog is left alone, may warrant help beyond a fence modification. Contact a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional to discuss the behavior and possible anxiety. Humane World for Animals advises professional help and veterinary discussion when anxiety may be involved.
What not to do
- Do not use toxic or dangerous deterrents. They can put your dog at risk and do not address why it is trying to escape.
- Do not tether your dog to a stationary object as a confinement method.
- Do not punish your dog after finding a hole or discovering an escape. Delayed punishment does not teach the dog how to behave instead, and may worsen digging associated with fear or anxiety.
