If it still moves, match the fix to what is happening: use a grippier or heavier bowl for sliding, a wider and more stable setup for tipping, and more mat coverage if your dog’s feet are slipping too.
First identify what is moving
A bowl sliding across a smooth floor needs more grip. A bowl that tips when your dog nudges it needs a broader, more stable base. If the bowl stays put but water ends up on the floor, focus on splash containment instead. These distinctions help you choose an adjustment without assuming one product will solve every problem.
- The bowl slides: Start with a non-slip mat and check that the floor and mat are flat and dry.
- The bowl tips: Try a wider or heavier-base bowl, or place it in a stable holder.
- Water splashes out: Use a mat with enough coverage to catch water, and wipe spills promptly. A controlled-flow, no-spill bowl is another option to consider.
- Your dog slips: Extend a non-slip surface beneath the dog’s standing area, not just beneath the bowl.
Try a mat under the bowl
A non-slip rubber or silicone mat is the simplest first adjustment for a bowl that slides. Choose one with enough surface area to support the bowl and catch ordinary splashes; a raised edge may help contain water. Keep the mat on a flat, dry part of the floor, and check that the mat itself does not slide.
BluePearl Veterinary Partners recommends placing a rug or mat beneath the bowl and all four of the pet’s feet when footing is a problem. That matters because a bowl mat alone may not help a dog whose paws lose traction while standing. Select a surface that lies securely underfoot and is easy to clean. BluePearl’s guidance on preventing pet slips also notes that slipping while eating can cause discomfort and pain.

If the bowl still moves, change the bowl or holder
Try a bowl with a rubberized base or a heavier, wider base if the mat does not stop sliding or the bowl tips when pushed. A stable holder can provide a larger footprint. Suction cups may be an option on a compatible smooth surface, but check floor compatibility before using them. Adhesive pads or a fixed station are other possibilities; consider whether they could leave residue or damage the floor.
These are practical options described by a pet-product maker, not head-to-head test winners. There is no reliable comparative figure establishing how much any particular mat, bowl, or holder reduces movement. Choose based on the bowl’s behavior in your home, traction on your actual floor, and whether the setup remains easy to refill and wash.

Make the water station easier and safer to use
Place the bowl somewhere calm, accessible, and outside the main walking path, where people are less likely to bump it. Keep enough room around it for your dog to stand comfortably. A mat can catch splashes, but wipe water promptly so the surrounding floor does not become slippery. For a dog that slips at the station, make sure the non-slip area covers the dog’s standing space as well as the bowl.
