Keep a bright dog engaged at home by rotating activities that let them sniff, search, learn, eat, move and interact—not by making every puzzle harder. Start with easy wins, use part of the dog’s regular food where practical, and adjust each activity to the individual dog’s interests, abilities and safety.

What mental enrichment should include

“Highly intelligent” does not tell you exactly what a particular dog will enjoy or how much activity they need. A useful home routine combines different kinds of engagement rather than relying on one toy or game. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and VCA Animal Hospitals both describe enrichment as something to tailor to the dog’s preferences, personality, physical ability and routine.

  • Searching and sniffing: let the dog use their nose to locate food or a favorite toy.
  • Foraging: make part of a meal something to find, lick or work out of a suitable feeder.
  • Learning: practice a new cue, trick or short sequence of familiar behaviors.
  • Variety: rotate safe toys and offer different textures or ways to interact.
  • Movement and connection: add gentle indoor activity and interaction the dog enjoys.

There is no universal daily mental-stimulation time prescription for highly intelligent dogs in the cited veterinary guidance. Look at how your dog responds and fit enrichment into the household routine rather than treating a fixed number of minutes as a requirement.

Start with an easy “find it” game

Food-search games are inexpensive and easy to scale. The ASPCA says, “Sniffing can be stimulating and calming and allows your dog to gather information on their environment.” ASPCA’s canine DIY enrichment guidance offers a simple starting point:

  3. Once they understand the cue, hide treats in easy, accessible places in the room.
  4. Make the search less obvious gradually, while keeping the hiding places safe and the dog interested.

You can hide a favorite toy instead of food. Avoid locations where searching could lead the dog to unsafe items, and make the game easier if the dog stops engaging.

Make ordinary meals more engaging

Offer some of the dog’s normal ration through a food puzzle, treat-dispensing toy, snuffle mat, folded towel or scatter-feeding setup. Food enrichment can occupy a dog in a calm, focused way and may slow fast eating, according to AAHA’s enrichment guidance. Using meal food helps avoid adding unnecessary calories; count treats and fillings as part of the daily ration.

Try a simple DIY puzzle

Options described by AAHA, the ASPCA and VCA include kibble under a few soft toys in a muffin tin, part of a meal wrapped in a towel, or food tucked into paper and toys in a cardboard box. Supervise closely if your dog may shred or swallow fabric, paper, cardboard or other materials.

Choose a purchased feeder by how your dog likes to work

Food puzzles come in different formats, including licking toys, stationary snuffle mats, and dispensers that move or wobble. Choose a format that suits whether your dog prefers to sniff, lick, paw, roll or search, then begin at the easiest setting. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior’s guide to food puzzle toys recommends starting with enticing food, demonstrating how a toy works if needed, and transitioning gradually toward regular kibble if you plan to use it for meals.

Teach cues and tricks in short sessions

Practice one new cue or trick, or link familiar behaviors into a short sequence. Reward successful attempts and keep sessions positive. AAHA includes learning cues and tricks, as well as short positive training sessions, among cognitive enrichment activities. A dog that already knows a puzzle may enjoy a different format or a new scent-search setup more than a harder version of the same task.

Rotate toys and offer safe movement

Refresh the toy selection

Keep a small selection of safe toys available and rotate them every few days. A stored toy may regain interest when it comes back into the rotation; different textures and formats also give the dog a change of activity. Inspect toys and remove damaged items that could be swallowed.

Match challenge to the dog, not the “smart dog” label

The goal is engagement without frustration or unsafe chewing. VCA notes that walking away from a food toy, or aggressively biting or barking at it, can be a sign that the challenge is too difficult. Reduce the difficulty or try another activity instead of assuming the dog needs a more complicated puzzle. A familiar activity can still be worthwhile if the dog enjoys it.

When comparing enrichment options, consider the dog’s preferred action, whether difficulty can be adjusted, the item’s size and durability, supervision needs, food suitability, setup and available space. The best option is the one the dog can use safely and remains interested in.

Keep enrichment safe

  • Supervise new toys and puzzles. Choose a suitable size and a durable design the dog cannot swallow or readily break into pieces. Remove damaged toys.
  • Watch for frustration or chewing. Make a puzzle easier if the dog walks away, barks at it or bites it aggressively. Directly supervise activities involving chewing or shredding to reduce the risk of choking or swallowing materials.
  • Account for food. Use normal meal food when practical, and include treats and fillings in the dog’s daily calories. If the dog has dietary sensitivities, a health condition or a weight concern, ask a veterinarian about ingredients and portions.
  • Check ingredients in frozen toys and broth. Use dog-safe ingredients; AAHA specifically cautions readers to check broth for onion, garlic and other unsafe ingredients.
  • Manage access around other pets. Separate pets if another animal may interfere with or guard a food-filled toy. If guarding involves aggression toward people, VCA recommends caution and professional advice.

If a dog shows marked distress, persistent destructive behavior, mobility limits, dietary restrictions or guarding, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for individualized guidance rather than escalating puzzle difficulty.
