Legends Say the Doomsday Fish Warns of Earthquakes—and History Has Chilling Examples

Japanese folklore links oarfish and other deep-sea-fish appearances with earthquakes, but a 2019 study found the relationship was hardly present under its stated test. The 2011 Tōhoku earthquake stories are striking historical coincidences, not a reliable warning system.

Japanese folklore links rare appearances of deep-sea fish, especially oarfish, with impending earthquakes. But a 2019 study of reported appearances in Japan found the relationship was hardly present under the researchers’ test, so an oarfish sighting is not a reliable earthquake warning.

The legend gained renewed attention after the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, when earlier fish sightings were retold as possible warnings. Those stories are culturally and historically interesting, but a coincidence remembered after a disaster does not establish that fish can predict earthquakes.

Key takeaways

  • Japanese accounts associate unusual deep-sea-fish appearances with impending earthquakes; this is folklore, not proof of prediction.
  • Researchers studied reports involving eight fish species associated with the folklore and assembled a catalog of reported appearances.
  • The University of Shizuoka’s 2019 summary reports 336 appearances from November 26, 1928, through March 11, 2011.
  • For the study’s stated test—an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or greater within 100 km and 30 days after an appearance—the summary identified one case: the July 16, 2007 Niigata Chuetsu-oki earthquake, magnitude 6.8.
  • The researchers said the spatiotemporal relationship was hardly present and attributed the belief to illusory correlation. The catalog was incomplete.

Do legends really say the doomsday fish warns of earthquakes?

Yes. Japanese folklore has associated unusual appearances of deep-sea fish with impending earthquakes. Historical writing places this belief within a broader tendency to link earthquakes with fish and other marine life. Gregory Smits’s historical work describes oarfish as “messengers from the undersea dragon palace.” These accounts describe cultural beliefs, not evidence that the fish forecast earthquakes.

The story is especially memorable because oarfish are rare and visually striking. A deep-sea fish appearing near people can seem like a portent, particularly when a major earthquake happens afterward. But a memorable sequence does not show that the first event caused or predicted the second.

What is the doomsday fish?

“Doomsday fish” is a popular label commonly used for the oarfish. Japanese earthquake stories may refer to oarfish and other deep-sea fish, so the label does not always identify one particular species. The folklore’s meaning is clearer than any claim that every retold sighting involved the same fish or came from the same kind of source.

Why are oarfish called earthquake fish?

Oarfish are called earthquake fish because Japanese accounts have linked unusual deep-sea-fish appearances with earthquakes. Historical context helps explain why the association endured, while the scientific question is whether sightings reliably precede earthquakes.

  • Cultural meaning: Oarfish have been described as messengers from an undersea dragon palace.
  • Incomplete records: Researchers compiled reports from sources including newspapers, academic literature, and marine museums, but acknowledged that observations and reporting were incomplete.
  • Retrospective matching: A sighting before a known earthquake can be retold as a warning afterward. That does not show that the sighting would have identified the earthquake in advance.
  • Repeated evidence matters: A useful warning signal would need to show a repeatable relationship with earthquakes, not just striking anecdotes.

Did oarfish warn people about the 2011 Japan earthquake?

Earlier deep-sea-fish sightings were later retold as possible warnings of the March 11, 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami. The example is emotionally striking and helps explain why the legend recurs, but the sources reviewed do not establish an exact count of pre-earthquake oarfish sightings as a verified result.

A retrospective coincidence is not evidence of a predictive mechanism. Researchers would need a defined test that examines many appearances and earthquakes, including cases where a sighting was not followed by an earthquake. The 2011 story should be understood as historical context, not as proof that oarfish predicted the disaster.

What did the 2019 study find?

Orihara, Kamogawa, Noda, and Nagao studied reports for eight fish species associated with the folklore. Their 2019 paper, Is Japanese Folklore Concerning Deep-Sea Fish Appearance a Real Precursor of Earthquakes?, used compiled reports of appearances and earthquake records. The University of Shizuoka’s 2019 research summary reports 336 appearances from November 26, 1928, through March 11, 2011.

Under the summary’s stated test—an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 or greater within 100 km and 30 days after an appearance—the researchers identified one case: the July 16, 2007 Niigata Chuetsu-oki earthquake, magnitude 6.8. This is the result under that specific test window, not a claim that it is the only possible way to define a precursor. The summary does not provide a predictive-accuracy percentage.

Question What the folklore says What the study reports
What is the cultural association? Unusual deep-sea-fish appearances may precede earthquakes. The association is a belief, not proof of prediction.
What records were studied? Individual stories often focus on memorable examples. The researchers assembled a catalog of 336 reported appearances across eight associated fish species.
What test window was reported? A sighting is sometimes treated as a warning without a defined window. The summary tested for magnitude 6.0-or-greater earthquakes within 100 km and 30 days after an appearance.
What was the result under that test? A dramatic coincidence can seem persuasive. One qualifying case was identified; the authors said the spatiotemporal relationship was hardly present.

The authors concluded: “Hence, this Japanese folklore is deemed to be a superstition attributed to the illusory correlation between the two events.” The catalog could not include every fish appearance because observations and reporting were incomplete. Its limits should be kept in view, but the study does not validate sightings as an earthquake warning.

Are oarfish sightings connected to earthquakes?

The study did not find evidence that the reported appearances reliably preceded earthquakes. Its result concerns the compiled Japanese reports and the researchers’ stated test; it does not explain every fish appearance or establish a cause for one.

Evidence question Folklore interpretation Evidence-led assessment
Cultural meaning A fish appearance may be an omen. Historical accounts document a belief; they do not establish prediction.
Record completeness Retold examples may sound like a complete record. The study’s catalog was compiled from reports and was acknowledged to be incomplete.
Timing and distance A sighting before an earthquake is treated as a warning. The test needs a defined window; the summary reports one qualifying case for its 30-day, 100-km, magnitude 6.0-or-greater test.
Predictive value A memorable match can feel convincing. A warning claim requires a repeatable relationship, not hindsight alone.

Can scientists predict earthquakes?

The research in this dossier does not support treating fish appearances as earthquake forecasts. It tests a folklore claim against compiled appearance reports and earthquake records, and its authors concluded that the association was an illusory correlation. A fish sighting should not be used to decide that an earthquake is imminent.

What should you do if you see an oarfish?

Treat the sighting as a wildlife observation, not an earthquake alert. If reporting it, provide the location and date and time when possible, and follow local wildlife authorities’ instructions. A documented sighting can contribute to records, but it does not by itself predict an earthquake.

The evidence-based verdict

The doomsday-fish story has cultural and historical significance, and sightings retold before the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake help explain its continuing appeal. But the 2019 study of reported appearances found the spatiotemporal relationship with earthquakes was hardly present under its test.

An oarfish sighting is not a validated earthquake warning. The study’s reported result is specific to its compiled catalog and chosen test window, and the catalog was incomplete; neither caveat turns folklore into an actionable forecast.
