There is no universal number of days to wait before contact: ask the veterinarian to advise based on the puppy’s health history and the other animals in your home. A vet check is a chance to get that guidance, not an automatic all-clear for every introduction.
Set up separate spaces before the puppy arrives
Choose a quiet puppy-only area where the puppy can rest and be cared for without entering another pet’s space. Keep resident pets’ usual retreat areas available, too. Avoid opening the door and letting a new puppy run into a resident animal’s established territory; VCA Animal Hospitals advises giving pets time and space to adjust.
A closed door provides a clear separation. If you need to see or supervise the animals across a boundary, a securely installed gate or screen may help, provided it suits their size, mobility, and behavior. A barrier is not secure if an animal can climb, jump, squeeze through, or push it over.
Choose equipment that fits the animals and the room
A crate or exercise pen can create a puppy-only resting or supervision area when it is appropriate for that puppy. Cornell University’s guidance on dog crates recommends introducing a crate with systematic positive reinforcement and notes that some dogs may do better in a larger, pet-proof exercise pen.

Choose among a door, gate, screen, crate, or pen according to the animals’ size and ability to climb or jump, the layout of the home, and how easily you can supervise. The space should be comfortable and suitable for the puppy to rest. Confinement is a management tool, not a reason to leave a social puppy without attention or activity.
- Give a confined puppy regular opportunities to toilet, move, play, and interact. Cornell cautions against extended confinement without chances to perform natural behaviors.
- Use a crate only if the puppy is being acclimated positively and can be cared for appropriately. VCA’s crate-training guidance covers confinement and breaks.
- A leash can help with supervised introductions later, but it does not replace a secure barrier or separate area.
Arrange a vet check and bring the puppy’s records
Book a veterinary examination as soon as possible. Bring any records from the breeder, shelter, rescue, or previous veterinarian, especially information about vaccinations and deworming. The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends arranging veterinary care for a new dog; VCA’s first-visit guidance explains how to prepare.

Ask the veterinarian about the puppy’s health, vaccine and parasite-control needs, and what contact is appropriate before and after the appointment. Check the resident pets’ vaccine status as well, and ask their veterinarian whether any health or vulnerability concerns call for extra precautions. VCA’s new-pet checklist advises ensuring pets are up to date on vaccines before introductions.
There is no source-established waiting period that fits every household. Timing depends on the puppy’s health and history, symptoms, vaccination and parasite status, local veterinary advice, and which animals live with you. If the puppy seems ill or a resident pet has a medical vulnerability, contact a veterinarian promptly and maintain separation while you wait for advice.

Introduce the animals gradually when advised
When you and your veterinarian consider the household ready, begin with low-pressure awareness rather than immediate face-to-face contact. VCA’s introduction guidance and advice on moving with a dog support gradual, controlled exposure.
- Start with scent or sound through a closed door. Let animals become aware of one another without direct access.
- Move to calm contact through a suitable barrier. Keep the barrier secure and give cats access to hiding places or an easy route to retreat.
- Try brief, supervised face-to-face sessions only if the animals remain relaxed. Keep dogs leashed where appropriate, and make sure smaller animals have secure protection.
- End the session or return to an earlier step if an animal is distressed or unsafe. Fear, hissing, lunging, or chasing are reasons to stop and increase distance.
Birds and small mammals need particular care around a puppy. For any carefully managed exposure, keep the puppy leashed and the smaller animal secured. If fear or lunging continues, use separate areas and ask a veterinarian for advice.

Keep separation humane and responsive
Make the puppy’s area comfortable, maintain daily care and interaction, and give the puppy appropriate breaks. VCA recommends breaks for the puppy and other pets after they have begun interacting successfully. Keep observing how each animal responds; a quiet first meeting does not mean they are ready to share space unsupervised.
Do not treat the veterinary appointment alone—or a fixed number of days—as proof that contact is safe. Use the veterinarian’s advice for your animals, and keep using separate spaces until you have a safe, gradual plan.
