If a kitten follows you, first stop and check whether it is safe, healthy, and possibly being cared for by its mother. Don’t immediately take it home: observe from a distance, move it only if it faces immediate danger, and call a local shelter, rescue, veterinarian, or animal control if it is sick, injured, or cannot be approached safely.
Pause and check whether the kitten needs immediate help
Stay calm and watch from a distance. A mother cat may be nearby looking for food or waiting for people to move away. If the kitten looks clean, plump, and quiet, the ASPCA advises monitoring for the mother’s return rather than removing it straight away: ASPCA guidance for found kittens.
There is no universal waiting time that fits every situation. Consider the kitten’s condition and surroundings, and follow advice from a local shelter or rescue if you are unsure.
- Clean, plump, and quiet: Observe from a distance for signs that the mother is caring for it.
- Dirty, thin, or persistently crying: It may need help; contact a local rescue, shelter, or veterinary clinic for guidance.
- Ill, injured, or in immediate danger: Call a shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic promptly, and call ahead to confirm they can accept the kitten.
Move the kitten only when needed
If the kitten is in immediate danger—such as near traffic—move it to a nearby safer spot where its mother can still find it. Avoid taking it far away if the mother may be caring for it.

If there is no urgent danger and the kitten seems well cared for, give the mother a chance to return while you monitor from a distance. If the kitten’s condition worsens or you cannot tell whether it needs care, ask a local animal-welfare professional rather than relying on a fixed waiting period.
Encourage a friendly kitten into a carrier without chasing it
Put your safety first. A kitten that approaches calmly may be coaxed into a carrier or cardboard box with a quiet voice and treats. Keep your movements slow, and let the kitten approach; do not chase, corner, or grab it. If the kitten is frightened, aggressive, injured, or cannot be captured safely, step back and contact animal control or a rescue for help. Avoid handling it if doing so risks a bite or scratch.
Keep the kitten separate from your pets
Do not introduce a found kitten to resident pets. Stray cats can carry parasites or infectious diseases, so keep the kitten in a separate, secure space while you arrange help. Ask a veterinarian or shelter for advice about its health and what to do next.

Check for an owner and follow local found-animal rules
Look for a collar or identification tag without putting yourself at risk. A shelter or veterinary clinic can scan the kitten for a microchip. The ASPCA recommends checking local found-animal reporting requirements and posting neighborhood notices; rules and procedures vary by location. See its found-animal guidance and ask your local shelter or animal-control service what applies where you are.
Do not guess about food or bottle-feeding
A kitten’s age and whether its mother is caring for it determine what it needs. ASPCA guidance says kittens may begin eating wet food on their own at around four to five weeks; that is not a reason to assume every found kitten is ready to eat independently. Ask a shelter, rescue, or veterinarian for direction before feeding.

For orphaned kittens, VCA recommends kitten milk replacer prepared according to its directions, warming the kitten before feeding, and bottle-feeding with the kitten horizontal and its head in a neutral position. A bottle that flows too quickly can cause aspiration. VCA also notes that kittens cannot regulate their own body temperature and rely on their environment to stay warm.
