How to Keep a Senior Dog Comfortable and Safe During Exercise

There’s no universal safe walk length for senior dogs. Let health, mobility and comfort guide exercise, and know when to slow down or seek veterinary help.

How much should you push a senior dog to walk? Don’t aim for a universal distance or number of minutes. Let your dog’s health, mobility and comfort guide the plan, and ask your veterinarian before starting or substantially changing an exercise routine. If your dog slows down, moves differently or seems stiff afterward, ease the demand and pay attention to whether the change persists.

Start with your dog, not a generic exercise target

Age alone doesn’t tell you what exercise is safe. A senior dog’s plan should reflect health conditions, pain, mobility and the activities the dog is used to doing. The 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines recommend discussing exercise and movement history as part of senior-pet assessment.

Ask your veterinarian to assess your dog before beginning a program or making a substantial change. The right activity and level of effort can differ widely between dogs, so a fixed daily-minute prescription may not fit yours.

Choose activities that suit your dog’s mobility

Let comfort and control guide activity choices. Consider how much impact and joint loading an activity involves, whether the footing is secure, whether your dog can stop or slow down easily, and how the dog responds during and afterward. These factors matter more than choosing an activity because it is commonly recommended for older dogs.

AAHA lists exercise therapy and hydrotherapy among rehabilitation approaches. They are possibilities to discuss with your veterinarian, not default choices for every senior dog. Your veterinarian can advise whether a rehabilitation approach is appropriate for your dog’s condition and mobility.

Watch for changes during and after exercise

Altered or slower movement, stiffness, limping and reluctance to move can point to pain or another health problem; don’t automatically dismiss them as normal aging. Pain-related changes may be subtle. If a walk seems uncomfortable or your dog is stiff afterward, reduce the demand. Ask your veterinarian about changes that recur, are marked or concern you. The AAHA pain-management guidance discusses recognizing and managing pain in senior pets.

Make warm-weather exercise safer

Senior dogs are among those at higher risk of heatstroke, according to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. On warm days, the AVMA advises choosing cooler hours, avoiding particularly hot conditions and hot asphalt, taking frequent breaks, and bringing enough water for both you and your pet. A portable water bottle can make water easier to carry, but it does not make hot conditions safe.

Use a simple check before, during and after a walk

  • Before: Consider your dog’s current mobility and health, the weather and the route. If you are starting or substantially changing exercise, consult your veterinarian first.
  • During: Observe your dog’s gait and behavior. Slow down or stop if movement looks uncomfortable, your dog becomes reluctant, or the conditions are too warm.
  • After: Notice whether your dog is stiff or moving differently. Reduce the demand if needed, and contact your veterinarian about recurring or marked changes.
  • In warm weather: Choose a cooler time, avoid hot pavement, take breaks and bring water. Treat severe or continuing overheating symptoms as urgent.

For additional senior-dog exercise ideas, the American Kennel Club’s guide to exercising senior dogs offers general guidance; your veterinarian’s advice should shape what is suitable for your dog.
