For a senior dog with joint pain, choose gentle, controlled movement—often a leash walk—and adjust the activity to the dog’s comfort and ability. Swimming, underwater treadmill work, and therapeutic exercises may suit some dogs, but a veterinarian or veterinary rehabilitation professional should help decide what is appropriate. There is no single safe duration or exercise plan for every dog.

What exercise is safe for an old dog with arthritis?

Low-impact, controlled movement is the central principle. The American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) recommends replacing high-impact running or jumping with activities such as leash walks. It notes that consistent low-impact exercise can help build the muscles around joints and promote joint stability. The COAST Development Group’s 2023 consensus guidance likewise recommends regular, age- and breed-appropriate activity while adapting duration to the individual dog’s age or life stage.

Those recommendations do not establish a universal number of minutes, distance, or weekly progression. A dog’s diagnosis, current comfort, conditioning, and other health concerns all affect what is reasonable. Ask the veterinarian who knows your dog to help set the plan, and avoid increasing activity simply because a general schedule says to.

Low-impact activities to discuss with your veterinarian

Activity Why it may fit How to approach it
Controlled leash walks ACVS and Cornell list leash walking among controlled or low-impact activity options. Keep the pace and route manageable for your dog. Ask your veterinarian how to adapt walks to your dog’s condition rather than relying on a fixed distance or duration.
Swimming or underwater treadmill ACVS lists both as aqua-therapy options; the American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV) describes hydrotherapy as pool or underwater-treadmill work. Discuss suitability with a veterinarian or rehabilitation practitioner. Water exercise is not right for every dog and should not be treated as a universal instruction.
Therapeutic exercise Rehabilitation may include individualized range-of-motion, balance, strength, or endurance work. Have a veterinary rehabilitation professional choose and demonstrate exercises for your dog; do not improvise joint manipulations or a routine from a generic list.
Everyday gentle movement COAST guidance includes regular activity and rehabilitation advice that can include movement at home. Ask which ordinary activities suit your dog. The cited guidance does not establish a universal game, repetition count, or schedule.

No one activity is best for every dog. Your veterinarian or rehabilitation practitioner can weigh your dog’s comfort, ability, and goals when choosing among these options. AAHA’s senior-care guidance includes rehabilitation as a possible part of care for chronic musculoskeletal disease; its pain-management guidance also notes limited controlled prospective veterinary trials. Rehabilitation is one element of an individualized care plan, not a guaranteed result.

Can my dog with joint pain still go for walks?

Often, controlled leash walks are a reasonable activity to discuss with the veterinarian, but pain or a change in mobility should not be managed by simply pushing through. Keep movement gentle and controlled; the COAST consensus advises avoiding or minimizing high-impact activity, sudden loading, and excessive exercise, particularly when a dog is not conditioned for it. Running, jumping, and abrupt bursts of activity may place more stress on painful joints.

Watch how your dog moves during and after activity, and tell the veterinarian if walking seems uncomfortable or mobility worsens. Ask for a patient-specific adjustment rather than guessing at a universal exercise dose.

Is swimming good for a dog with arthritis?

Swimming and underwater treadmill work are recognized aqua-therapy options, but whether either is suitable depends on the individual dog. ACVS lists these activities for osteoarthritis management, while AARV describes hydrotherapy as a rehabilitation modality. A rehabilitation practitioner can determine whether water work fits your dog and tailor it as part of a broader plan. Do not assume every dog with joint pain should swim or use an underwater treadmill.

Make movement easier at home

Slippery floors can make getting around more difficult. AAHA lists rugs or yoga mats as ways to improve footing, and Cornell mentions non-slip rugs and ramps among lifestyle supports for dogs with osteoarthritis. A non-slip mat or runner placed where your dog needs traction may help with footing; it is a mobility aid, not a treatment for arthritis.

When joint pain needs veterinary assessment

Stiffness, limping or a changed gait, reluctance to exercise, difficulty rising, and trouble with stairs or jumping can be signs of osteoarthritis, but they do not diagnose it. Osteoarthritis can develop at any age, not only in older dogs. If you notice new or worsening pain or mobility changes, contact your veterinarian. Diagnosis begins with an examination and may include imaging to assess joint or bone changes.

Exercise is not a substitute for pain assessment or treatment. ACVS, Cornell, and AAHA describe care in a broader context that can include activity modification, weight management, medication, rehabilitation, physical modalities, and changes to the home environment. Your veterinarian can help determine which elements are appropriate for your dog.
