Start with a few easy steps, release your dog with a cue such as “go sniff,” and pause whenever the leash tightens. Keep exploratory sniff time distinct from short stretches of walking together, and let your dog explore only within safe boundaries.
Use two clear walk modes
A sniff walk and a loose-leash practice interval have different purposes. During exploratory time, your dog can choose the pace and direction within safe limits; constant heel position or continuous handler direction is not required. During a practice interval, cue your dog to move with you and reward a slack leash. Mark the change between modes with a consistent cue so your dog can tell when sniffing is available.

Teach the pattern: slack leash, then sniff
- Begin somewhere easy. Choose a low-distraction place and ask for only a few steps near you. Reward a slack leash or a spontaneous check-in; short stretches and frequent rewards make the exercise manageable.
- Release your dog to a smell. When the leash is slack, praise and say your chosen cue, such as “go sniff.” Let the dog reach an appropriate scent. Sniffing can reinforce the walking behavior when access follows the behavior you want.
- Pause when the leash tightens. Stop rather than pulling back. Wait for your dog to return, turn attention toward you, or otherwise create slack. Then reward and continue, or release to sniff if that fits the moment.
- Gradually ask for more. Once a few steps are going well, build the walking interval slowly. If your dog struggles, shorten it or move to a less distracting setting instead of repeating a difficult request.
This approach follows the principle that a desired activity can reinforce a behavior: the AKC explanation of the Premack principle describes using a high-probability activity as a reward for a less likely behavior.

What to do when your dog pulls toward a scent
Do not let pulling produce forward movement or immediate access to the smell. Stop, keep the leash safe and manageable, and wait for slack. When it returns, reward that change and either continue walking or give your sniff cue. Avoid turning the moment into a tug-of-war by pulling back against your dog.
If your dog cannot disengage from a scent or the environment is too exciting, create more distance or choose an easier spot. Begin again with a shorter interval. A few successful steps are a useful starting point; there is no established ideal sniff duration or guaranteed timetable for progress.

Keep sniffing safe and comfortable
- Prevent your dog from entering traffic and from approaching people or dogs without permission.
- Use a leash and equipment you can safely manage. The AKC advises waiting to use a retractable leash until a dog understands polite walking on a standard six-foot leash; see its retractable-leash safety guidance.
- A front-attachment harness may help manage a determined puller while you train, but it does not teach loose-leash walking by itself. RSPCA Australia recommends getting help from a reward-based trainer with fitting and use; its leash-equipment guidance discusses equipment choices.
Choose equipment for fit, comfort, attachment point, and your ability to control your dog safely. No single harness or brand is established as best for every dog.
Use reward-based training, not leash corrections
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward-based methods for dog training. Its humane dog training position statement, dated 2021, says: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods be used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” Avoid leash corrections and pain-based equipment such as prong collars, choke chains, and electronic collars. VCA also explains the pain-based mechanism of these training collars in its guidance on controlling pulling on walks.

When extra help may be useful
If timing rewards, handling distractions, or finding comfortable equipment is difficult—or pulling persists—a reward-based trainer or leash-walking class can provide hands-on help. Ask for guidance on fitting and use if you are considering a front-attachment harness. Equipment can support management, but the slack-leash behavior still needs to be taught.
