The safest way to keep bears away from pets is to remove food and other attractants, keep pets under control, and reduce their time outdoors when bears are active. Feed pets indoors when possible; if you feed them outside, pick up bowls and leftovers promptly. Keep dogs leashed and supervised, bring outdoor pets into a secure indoor area at night where feasible, and give any bear you encounter room to leave. These steps reduce risk but cannot guarantee that a bear will stay away.
Remove pet food and other attractants
Pet food, leftovers, and bowls can draw bears into a yard. The most reliable first step is to avoid leaving an easy food reward outdoors.
- Feed pets indoors if possible. California wildlife guidance advises against leaving food accessible to bears, while New Jersey Fish and Wildlife tells pet owners in bear country: “Do not feed pets outdoors.”
- If outdoor feeding is necessary, stay with your pet. Pick up the bowl and any uneaten food as soon as the pet finishes. Do not leave food outside between meals or overnight.
- Store pet food securely. Use a bear-resistant container inside a secure building or area. A container is one layer of protection, not a reason to leave food or bowls unattended outdoors.
- Check for other attractants. Follow local wildlife guidance about food and other items that may draw bears to your property; pet food is one of several possible attractants.
California Department of Fish and Wildlife, New Jersey Fish and Wildlife, and Florida wildlife guidance support these food-management steps: California bear guidance, New Jersey pet-owner guidance, and Florida living-with-bears guidance.
Keep pets close and under control
Leash dogs outdoors
Keep dogs on a leash and close enough to control. California advises, “Leash pets outdoors.” Florida recommends short leashes, and other state wildlife agencies likewise advise controlling dogs in bear country. A dog that approaches, chases, or lunges at a bear can provoke a defensive response; do not let your dog investigate a bear.

Keep pets in view rather than allowing them to roam unattended. California’s black-bear guidance also says not to leave pets unattended or sleeping outside.
Bring outdoor pets inside at night
Where feasible, bring pets that normally stay outside into a secure indoor area at night. New Jersey advises bringing outdoor pets inside and keeping dogs indoors or in a secure kennel. If a pet must be outside, use a secure enclosure and ask your local wildlife agency about appropriate placement and construction for your area.

New Jersey recommends placing animal pens at least 50 yards from forest tree lines or other cover. That is regional guidance for New Jersey bear country, not a universal setback for every location or bear species.
Make nighttime trips safer
Before taking a pet into the yard after dark in an area where bears are common, check the yard from a safe place. Motion-sensor lighting can help you see the area, but it is an aid to visibility—not a proven barrier that keeps bears away. Keep the pet leashed and bring it back inside promptly.

If you see a bear near your pet
- Keep your distance. Do not approach the bear or try to get close to retrieve or protect a pet.
- Give the bear a way to leave. Keep yourself and your pet away from its path, and do not corner or chase it.
- Follow local instructions for the species and situation. Encounter guidance varies by location and bear species. Contact the relevant state, provincial, tribal, or federal wildlife authority about a bear conflict.
For grizzly bears, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service guidance calls for keeping at least 100 yards (300 feet) away. This is the distance specified in that agency’s grizzly guidance; do not assume it applies to every species or replaces local instructions. See the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service bear-country guidance.
Bear spray is for human safety, not pet protection
California and federal grizzly guidance discuss carrying bear spray in relevant outdoor settings and knowing how to use it. Treat it as a human-safety measure, not a way to protect a pet by approaching a bear. Do not count on spray to guarantee a pet’s safety or use it as a reason to close distance.

Washington guidance gives a specific instruction for a dog that contacts a bear: use bear spray rather than getting between the dog and bear. This is jurisdiction-specific advice; it is not a general instruction to approach a fight or try to retrieve a pet. Consult the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife bear guidance and your own local wildlife agency’s instructions.

Bear species, local rules, and recommended responses differ by place. Check guidance from the wildlife agency responsible for your area, including any advice about outdoor pet enclosures and what to do during an encounter. Ontario’s bear-encounter prevention guidance and Connecticut-hosted BearWise material are examples of regional resources; they do not replace your local authority’s requirements.
