How to Keep Cats Cool During a Heatwave: A Practical Safety Guide

A practical, vet-informed guide to cooling cats during a heatwave, preventing dangerous heat traps and responding quickly to panting, confusion or collapse.

Keep your cat cool by giving it constant access to shade, moving air, several fresh-water stations and cool resting surfaces, while preventing access to hot enclosed spaces and strenuous activity. Watch closely for fast breathing or panting, drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhoea, marked lethargy, shaking or collapse. These can indicate heatstroke, which is an emergency: move your cat to a cooler place, begin gentle cooling with lukewarm water and contact a veterinarian immediately.

Why heatwaves are dangerous for cats

Cats regulate body temperature mainly through their environment and behaviour. They seek shade, reduce activity and groom themselves, but those strategies can fail when the air is hot, still or humid. A cat shut in a conservatory, shed, greenhouse, vehicle or poorly ventilated room may be unable to escape rising temperatures. Dehydration, stress and exertion increase the danger.

Heatstroke is not simply ordinary summer discomfort. Cats Protection and veterinary guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals treat suspected heatstroke as an emergency because deterioration can be rapid. A cat that appears only mildly affected can worsen after prolonged exposure, so do not wait to see whether signs disappear on their own.

  • Restlessness or an inability to settle
  • Fast breathing or panting
  • Excessive drooling
  • Confusion, weakness or unusual behaviour
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Marked lethargy
  • Shaking or tremors
  • Collapse or unresponsiveness

RSPCA Australia lists lethargy, rapid breathing, shaking and collapse among possible heatstroke signs in companion animals; Cats Protection also identifies restlessness, panting, drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhoea and collapse. In a cat exposed to heat, any combination of these signs warrants an immediate call to a veterinarian.

Panting is especially important to notice because cats do not normally pant like dogs during routine rest. Panting after intense exertion can have a different explanation, but panting during a heatwave, in a warm room or alongside weakness should be treated as urgent.

Build a cool, safe indoor area

Block direct sun before the room heats up

Close blinds or curtains on sunny windows, particularly when the sun is strongest. Keep the cat’s preferred resting areas away from sunlit glass and hot floors. A shaded room is useful only if the cat can leave it; do not shut a cat into a small space without checking its temperature and ventilation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep air moving without removing choice

Open suitable windows or use a fan to improve circulation, while securing windows so the cat cannot fall or escape. Position the fan to move air through the room rather than blowing forcefully into the cat’s face. Always leave an un-fanned area available so the cat can move away if it becomes uncomfortable.

Airflow is a comfort measure, not a replacement for a cool room. A fan circulating hot air cannot make a sealed conservatory safe, and it should never be used as a reason to leave a cat in an enclosed vehicle or outbuilding. Check the cat rather than assuming it is comfortable because the fan is running.

Offer several water stations

Place fresh water in more than one easily reached location and top it up regularly. Multiple bowls help when a cat dislikes one location, when another pet guards a resource, or when the cat moves between rooms. Outdoor cats should have a shaded water station as well. Ice cubes in a bowl are an optional way to keep water cool if your cat accepts them; they are not necessary and should not delay replacing warm or dirty water.

Keep bowls away from litter trays and strong-smelling food, and check them during the day rather than assuming one large bowl will last. A fountain is simply another way to provide a station; the essential requirement is reliable access to clean water. Put stations where the cat already spends time, including near a favourite sleeping area, so it does not have to cross a hot room to drink.

Provide a choice of resting surfaces

Set up several locations: a shaded floor, a cool tiled area, a lightly damp towel and a normal dry bed. A cat should be able to choose and leave each surface freely. RSPCA guidance supports a damp towel or an ice pack wrapped in a towel as a cool resting option. Never place bare ice directly against the skin, and remove any surface that becomes wet, damaged or too cold.

Choices matter because cats vary in what they tolerate. Some will lie on a damp towel, while others prefer a dry floor beside it. Do not pin a cat onto a mat, wrap it tightly in a wet towel or force its paws into water. The aim is to let the cat regulate contact and retreat whenever it wants.

Manage outdoor access and heat traps

Check every enclosed space

Before closing a shed, greenhouse, conservatory, garage or other outbuilding, check that no cat is inside. These spaces can become dangerously hot even when the outdoor air feels tolerable. Never leave a cat in a parked car, even briefly or with a window partly open. A vehicle can heat rapidly and ventilation is not a reliable safeguard.

Make checking habitual: look behind stored items, inside cupboards and under benches before securing a door. If a cat is missing during a hot day, inspect these spaces early rather than assuming it is hiding safely outdoors.

Make outdoor shelter genuinely safe

If your cat goes outside, provide a shaded shelter with ventilation, fresh water and a clear route in and out. Do not use a box, carrier or covered structure that could trap the cat. Check the shelter’s interior during the hottest part of the day: shade can disappear as the sun moves, and enclosed materials may retain heat.

A shelter should offer shade without becoming a sealed chamber. Position it where buildings or natural shade block direct sun, and provide more than one exit route if practical. Refresh water in the shelter and inspect it for insects, debris or heat before the cat uses it.

Reduce activity during the hottest hours

Keep cats indoors during the warmest period when feasible and avoid encouraging chase games, vigorous play or exercise during a heatwave. Cats Protection describes approximately 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. as the usual sunniest and warmest window in its warm-weather advice, but local weather, humidity, shade and building design vary. Use the actual conditions rather than treating those hours as a universal rule. Offer quiet enrichment instead of activities that trigger sustained exertion.

Which cooling options help, and what they cannot do

Option What it helps with Safe use and limits
Shade and closed blinds Reduces direct sun and radiant heat Make a shaded retreat available; do not confine the cat in an unmonitored room.
Fan or cross-ventilation Improves circulation when air is still Secure windows, keep an alternative area available and check that the cat can move away.
Several water stations Improves access to hydration Use clean, topped-up bowls in accessible places; a fountain is optional.
Damp towel or wrapped cool pack Creates a cooler place to lie Use a damp towel or towel-wrapped pack; never apply bare ice and never prevent the cat leaving.
Cooling mat Adds another cool resting surface It is an optional supplement to shade and airflow, not emergency treatment.
Grooming brush Removes loose, dead or excess hair Use regular gentle grooming; it does not prevent heatstroke and shaving is not recommended as a heatwave measure by the cited guidance.
Cat-safe sunscreen Protects exposed or thinly furred skin from sunburn Ask a veterinarian to confirm the product. Cats Protection advises SPF 30 or higher and avoiding zinc oxide and salicylates, which it identifies as toxic to cats.

These measures improve comfort or reduce exposure; none replaces prompt veterinary care when heatstroke is possible. A cooling mat is an optional purchase, not a requirement. If you buy one, place it where the cat can leave easily and continue to provide ordinary dry resting places. Likewise, a fountain may encourage some cats to drink, but several simple bowls meet the basic need and are easier to place in different rooms.

Give extra protection to higher-risk cats

Some cats have less margin for error in hot weather. Cats Protection identifies the following as higher-risk groups:

  • Flat-faced cats
  • Very young kittens
  • Older cats
  • Cats that become highly stressed in heat

Risk also rises when a cat is in a hot, poorly ventilated place without water. Plan the environment before the heat peaks: identify the coolest rooms, place water there and arrange supervision if you will be away. Ask your veterinarian for an individual heat plan if your cat has a chronic illness, limited mobility or a history of breathing difficulty; the cited guidance does not establish one universal temperature threshold for every cat.

For a kitten, older cat or flat-faced cat, check more frequently and limit time outdoors during peak sun. A stressed cat may hide, so look in its normal resting places and confirm that it can reach water. If several cats share a home, provide enough stations that one cat cannot block another’s access.

Protect exposed skin from sun

Cats with thin fur, white fur or naturally exposed areas can be vulnerable to sunburn. Ask a veterinarian to approve a product before applying anything. Cats Protection advises pet-safe sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and says to avoid zinc oxide and salicylates, which it identifies as toxic to cats. Apply only as directed and prevent access to treated skin if the cat immediately licks it.

Sunscreen does not make direct sun safe, and it does not cool the body. Keep vulnerable cats in shade and reduce outdoor exposure first. Never substitute human sunscreen without checking its ingredients and suitability with a veterinary professional.

What to do if you suspect heatstroke

Act immediately rather than monitoring at home.

  1. Move the cat out of the heat. Take it to a shaded, ventilated, cooler area and stop any play or exertion.
  2. Call a veterinarian at once. Explain the heat exposure and every sign you have observed. Do not wait to see whether the cat improves before making contact.
  3. Begin gradual cooling while arranging care. Use a cloth wet with lukewarm water to gently cool the coat and body. Cooling should be steady and should not frighten or restrain the cat unnecessarily.
  4. Prepare safe transport. Use a well-ventilated carrier, keep the vehicle cool and avoid covering the carrier with a thick blanket. Follow the clinic’s instructions while travelling.
  5. Continue observing during the journey. Report worsening breathing, collapse, vomiting, confusion or reduced responsiveness to the veterinary team as soon as possible.

Do not use a sudden ice bath, force water into a weak or confused cat, or delay professional help while trying several home remedies. A cooling mat, fan or grooming session is not a substitute for emergency assessment. If the cat resists handling, prioritise a clear call to the clinic and transport instructions rather than wrestling it into a cooling device.

A simple heatwave routine

Before the hottest part of the day

  • Close blinds or curtains on sunny windows.
  • Check that fans, windows and screens are secure.
  • Put fresh water in every planned station, including a shaded outdoor station if appropriate.
  • Inspect sheds, greenhouses, conservatories, garages and vehicles before closing or using them.
  • Offer a quiet play period early, then reduce strenuous activity.

During the peak heat

  • Keep the cat in the coolest suitable area when possible.
  • Check water levels and the condition of damp towels or wrapped packs.
  • Allow the cat to move between dry, damp, shaded and ventilated surfaces.
  • Watch breathing, behaviour, coordination and responsiveness rather than relying on whether the cat feels warm to your hand.
  • Check outdoor shelters as the sun moves, since a previously shaded spot may become exposed.

In the evening

  • Refresh all water stations and clean bowls.
  • Gently brush loose or excess hair if your cat enjoys grooming.
  • Reassess outdoor shelters as the sun moves and remove anything that has become hot.
  • Keep observing a cat that showed any warning sign earlier; contact a veterinarian if signs recur or persist.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leaving a cat in a car “for only a minute”

Do not do this. A parked vehicle is a recognised heat trap, and partial ventilation does not make it safe.

Assuming shade alone is enough

Shade can disappear or remain hot if air is stagnant. Pair it with airflow, water and a way to move to another area.

Forcing cooling or water

A frightened cat may struggle, increasing stress and exertion. Offer choices and use gentle lukewarm cooling while contacting a veterinarian if illness is suspected.

Shaving the coat as a routine heatwave solution

The cited guidance recommends regular grooming to remove dead or excess hair but does not recommend shaving as a heatwave measure. A coat also provides some protection from sunlight, so discuss severe matting or a medical clipping need with a professional groomer or veterinarian.

Using human sunscreen

Some ingredients can be toxic when a cat licks them from its skin. For exposed or thinly furred areas, ask a veterinarian about a cat-safe product; Cats Protection advises SPF 30 or higher and avoiding zinc oxide and salicylates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to call the veterinarian

Call immediately for panting or fast breathing in a hot environment, drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhoea, shaking, severe lethargy, weakness or collapse. Also seek advice if a higher-risk cat cannot access a cool, ventilated area or water. Early professional guidance is safer than waiting for a clear collapse, because heat illness can progress while the cat is still conscious and moving.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I cool my cat quickly at home?

Move the cat to a shaded, ventilated area, offer fresh water and use a cloth wet with lukewarm water for gradual cooling. If the cat is panting, drooling, confused, vomiting, shaking, very lethargic or collapsed, call a veterinarian immediately rather than relying on home cooling.

Is panting in a cat always an emergency?

Panting after intense exertion may have another explanation, but panting during a heatwave, in a warm room or alongside weakness is urgent. Move the cat out of the heat and contact a veterinarian, especially if breathing remains fast or other warning signs appear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I put ice in my cat’s water?

Ice cubes are optional if your cat accepts them. They are not required, and they should never delay replacing warm or dirty water. Keep several bowls of clean water available in accessible, shaded locations.

Do cooling mats work for cats?

A cooling mat can provide another cool resting surface, but it is an optional supplement to shade, airflow and water. Place it where the cat can leave freely, keep a dry alternative nearby and never use it as emergency treatment for suspected heatstroke.

Can I shave my cat during a heatwave?

The cited cat-care guidance supports regular grooming to remove dead or excess hair but does not recommend shaving as a heatwave measure. Discuss severe matting or a medically necessary clip with a veterinarian or professional groomer.

What sunscreen is safe for cats?

Ask a veterinarian to confirm a cat-safe product. Cats Protection advises SPF 30 or higher for exposed skin and avoiding zinc oxide and salicylates, which it identifies as toxic to cats. Sunscreen does not replace shade.

How do I keep an outdoor cat safe in extreme heat?

Provide a ventilated, shaded shelter with fresh water and a clear route in and out. Keep the cat indoors during the warmest period when feasible, avoid strenuous activity and check sheds, greenhouses, conservatories and other enclosed spaces before closing them.

What should I do if my cat collapses in the heat?

Treat collapse as an emergency. Move the cat from the hot environment, call a veterinarian immediately, begin gentle cooling with lukewarm water while arranging care and transport it in a well-ventilated carrier in a cool vehicle. Do not wait for recovery before seeking help.

The Bottom Line

Shade, airflow, multiple clean-water stations and freely accessible cool resting places are the foundation of heatwave safety. Keep cats away from cars and hot enclosed spaces, reduce activity during peak heat and give higher-risk cats extra supervision. Panting, rapid breathing, drooling, confusion, vomiting, diarrhoea, shaking, severe lethargy or collapse require immediate veterinary contact and gradual cooling with lukewarm water while help is arranged.
