What to Do if Your Dog Barks or Destroys Things When Left Alone

Barking and destruction may signal separation-related distress, but they are not a diagnosis. Record your dog's absence, prevent panic and injury, use gradual below-threshold practice, and involve a veterinarian for severe or persistent signs.

If your dog barks, howls, chews, scratches or breaks out when alone, first find out what happens and when. These behaviors can indicate separation-related distress, but one symptom does not prove separation anxiety. Record an ordinary absence, protect your dog from injury and property hazards, then arrange a veterinary assessment if distress is intense, persistent or worsening. Treatment usually combines management, gradual behavior work and, for some dogs, veterinarian-prescribed medication.

What barking or destruction may mean

Separation-related distress is fear or anxiety triggered by being away from a particular person or people. Affected dogs may vocalize, pace, pant, tremble, drool, refuse food, soil the home, destroy objects or try to escape. Some react to departure cues such as shoes, keys or a coat before anyone leaves; others begin within minutes of the door closing.

Destruction around doors, windows or barriers is more concerning than ordinary chewing because it may reflect an attempt to escape. Broken nails, bleeding gums, damaged teeth, cuts, ingestion of debris or repeated frantic activity require prompt attention. A dog that barks only at outside noises, chews when bored, or has a medical cause for restlessness may need a different solution. Barking and chewing alone cannot establish a diagnosis.

Patterns worth distinguishing

What you observe Possible explanation Why the distinction matters
Vocalizing, pacing or scratching soon after departure, especially at exits Separation-related distress is possible Training should focus on tolerable absences and emotional safety, not punishment
Chewing that occurs at varied times, with relaxed body language Boredom, normal chewing or access to an appealing object Exercise, enrichment and management may be sufficient
Barking only after sounds outside or from a window Territorial or noise-triggered arousal Reducing visual and sound triggers may be more useful than departure practice
Sudden new destruction, vocalizing or house soiling Medical, pain-related, sensory or other behavioral change A veterinarian should check for an underlying problem

Record an absence before choosing a treatment

Video is the most reliable way to see what happens after you leave. Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Karen Overall wrote that “Video of your dog while she is home alone is the most effective and accurate way to tell if she has separation anxiety.” The recording supports assessment; it does not replace a qualified professional’s evaluation.

How to make a useful recording

  1. Set up a camera or phone so it shows the dog’s resting area, exits and any crate. An indoor pet camera is optional; the important feature is a stable recording that you can review.
  2. Record at least the first 30–60 minutes of an ordinary absence when practical. AVSAB notes that many dogs with separation anxiety show signs within the first 10 minutes, so do not record only the final part of a long outing.
  3. Leave in your normal way rather than creating an unusually dramatic test. Note the time you leave and return, plus cues such as picking up keys, putting on shoes or closing a gate.
  4. Review the early minutes and write down latency to barking, howling, pacing, panting, scratching, destruction, toileting, escape attempts, settling, eating and sleeping.
  5. Save the video and behavior log for your veterinarian. Several short recordings on different days can reveal whether the response is consistent.

Look at body language as well as noise. A dog that takes a food toy, lies down and occasionally looks toward the door is presenting a different picture from one that pants, circles, vocalizes continuously or attacks a barrier. The timing and combination of signs guide the next step.

Prevent injury and reduce repeated panic

Training is harder when a dog repeatedly experiences absences longer than it can tolerate. While you build a plan, use a sitter, family member, trusted friend, daycare or another safe arrangement when feasible. This is management, not a cure: it reduces opportunities for panic while behavior work progresses.

Make the environment safer

  • Remove medications, toxic foods, electrical cords, sharp objects, small items and anything the dog has previously swallowed or shredded.
  • Block access to windows, doors or fences that trigger frantic escape attempts, while preserving ventilation and a comfortable resting area.
  • Check identification and secure gates before leaving. A dog that can break through a barrier may escape into traffic.
  • Do not leave a muzzle, tether or equipment that could catch on furniture without professional guidance.

Decide whether a crate is appropriate

A crate helps only when the dog already rests comfortably and safely in it. If your dog pants, drools, claws, bites bars, repeatedly slams into the door, soils the crate or injures itself, confinement can intensify the problem. Use a larger safe room or pen, or arrange supervision, and ask a professional to help you evaluate the setup. Never use a crate simply to contain destruction when the recording shows panic.

Build tolerance with gradual departures

The central behavior approach is desensitization paired with counterconditioning. You expose the dog to an absence short enough to remain below its distress threshold and pair calm behavior with something positive when appropriate. The starting duration may be only a few seconds; it is determined by the recording, not by a standard schedule.

A practical progression

  1. Identify a starting absence your dog can complete calmly. If barking begins at 20 seconds, begin substantially shorter rather than repeatedly testing 20 seconds.
  2. Prepare the same safe area and departure routine. Keep your movements quiet and predictable.
  3. Step out for the planned interval, then return before distress starts. Wait for calm rather than making the return a highly exciting event.
  4. Repeat several successful trials, ending while the dog is still coping. Increase duration in small, varied increments only when the dog remains relaxed.
  5. Practice departure cues separately when needed. Pick up keys, put on shoes or open the door, then sit down without leaving so those cues lose some of their predictive power.
  6. Record selected sessions. If the dog pants, scans, vocalizes, stops eating, scratches or escalates, the next interval should be shorter and progress slower.

There is no safe universal timetable. A dog may advance from seconds to minutes over many sessions, plateau, or need a different starting point after a difficult day. An experienced positive-reinforcement trainer or veterinary behaviorist can tailor the increments and identify subtle stress signals.

Use food only when the dog can eat

A food-dispensing toy or puzzle feeder can support counterconditioning for a dog that willingly eats while alone. Introduce it while you are present, choose a durable item suited to the dog and supervise initial use. A severely distressed dog may ignore food entirely; withholding meals to make a toy more tempting is not treatment. If eating stops once you leave, tell your veterinarian because that is useful severity information.

What not to do

Do not punish after you return

Scolding a dog for a damaged door or puddle hours after it happened cannot connect the punishment to the earlier action. It can make your return frightening and increase anxiety around departures. Physical corrections, intimidation, shock or pain-based methods likewise do not teach the dog that being alone is safe and may worsen distress.

Do not keep testing the maximum duration

Leaving for progressively longer periods to “make the dog get used to it” can produce repeated panic. Work below threshold and arrange care for absences that exceed the current ability. A single unavoidable long absence does not mean training has failed, but plan future coverage where possible.

When to involve a veterinarian

Schedule a veterinary appointment for sudden onset, persistent or escalating signs, inability to settle, refusal to eat when alone, repeated house soiling, failed progress, or any injury risk. Bring the recording, a written timeline and a list of recent changes such as moving, schedule shifts, illness, new pets or medication.

The veterinarian can examine for pain, gastrointestinal disease, urinary problems, sensory changes and other conditions that resemble anxiety. Ask whether referral to a board-certified veterinary behaviorist or a qualified, reward-based behavior professional is appropriate. A trainer should be willing to coordinate with the veterinarian and avoid methods based on fear or pain.

Medication is a veterinary decision

Medication may lower anxiety enough for a dog to learn from behavior work; it is not a substitute for management and gradual practice. The choice depends on the dog’s health, triggers, severity, timing and other medicines. Never use human medication, another pet’s prescription or an unverified supplement without veterinary direction.

On May 6, 2026, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced approval of Tessie (tasipimidine oral solution) for dogs with noise aversion and separation anxiety. It is prescription-only because veterinary expertise is needed to diagnose and treat these conditions. FDA describes oral administration one hour before the expected noise stimulus or departure; that timing is not individualized dosing advice, and the product is not suitable for every dog. Discuss current indications, contraindications, monitoring and alternatives with your veterinarian.

How to tell whether your plan is working

Use the same measures from your initial log: time until the first stress sign, total vocalizing, pacing, destruction, ability to eat, and recovery after you return. Improvement may appear as a longer calm period, less intense behavior or quicker settling rather than immediate freedom to leave for hours.

  • Progressing: recordings show relaxed body language at the practiced duration on multiple sessions.
  • Too difficult: distress starts earlier, escalates faster or appears during departure cues; shorten the next practice and review the setup.
  • Stalled: there is no change despite careful below-threshold work; obtain professional guidance rather than increasing duration at random.
  • Unsafe: the dog is injuring itself, escaping, ingesting debris or panicking continuously; stop exposure practice at that level and contact a veterinarian promptly.

A simple decision checklist

  1. Record the first 30–60 minutes of an ordinary absence, focusing on the first 10 minutes.
  2. List the exact behaviors, their timing and any departure cues.
  3. Remove hazards and arrange supervision or alternative care for absences beyond the dog’s current tolerance.
  4. Use a crate only if the dog is demonstrably comfortable and safe there.
  5. Begin very brief, below-threshold departures and increase duration only while the dog remains calm.
  6. Avoid punishment and pain-based equipment.
  7. Share recordings with a veterinarian, especially for sudden, severe, persistent or injurious signs.
